Episode about SCAM Mechanical Advantage for Limb Walks:
• LIMB WALKS with MECHAN...
In this episode, I will discuss and demonstrate the S.C.A.M. (Single Carabiner Access Method) retrievable redirect, which only involves your rope and a pulley-biner (such as the Roll Clip Z by Petzel or the Revolver Rig by DMM; I demonstrate using the latter). A regular pulley with a separate carabiner can also be used instead.
In the video, the part of the tree I'm in is relatively shaded and it was difficult to see exactly what I was doing. Therefore, I added a series of photos which better articulate each step in the process for this redirect in the middle of the video.
Following this more detailed demo of each aspect of the tying process, I rappel down to the ground on the theoretical 3:1 system. The friction in the system actually made it difficult for me to rappel without pumping the bird on my Rope Runner Pro, so the action was very jumpy. Not really a huge deal, though. I never felt out of control.
Retrieving this system is super easy and very straightforward. It works every time so long as you don't lock the pulley-biner down too hard with too tight of a loop at the start of the tying process for this redirect. Create and maintain a loop that extends down about 8-12" from the limb or spar you are redirecting off of.
