DISCLAIMER: I am NOT an expert. The activities discussed in this channel are inherently dangerous and a climber must fully understand how to use their equipment, and understand basic climbing techniques, prior to ascending. My videos are NOT a substitute for professional guidance, teaching and/or direction. Be sure to get instruction from a trained professional before even considering climbing a tree of any size. Always begin "low and slow." You take my advice at your own risk and I cannot be held responsible for any injury (or death) you may incur. Tree climbing takes practice, patience, and stringent inspection protocols in order to generate an acceptable margin of safety. Avoid climbing alone. Have backup plans! Enjoy!

Hello Knotorius. That's another good video from you. I'd like to make a few comments about the GriGri. I also have a GriGri+ myself. But I only use it for sport climbing. The GriGri is a very controversial device here in Germany for tree climbing. There have been a few accidents with it. The problem with the GriGri is that if you don't put enough weight on it, it can slip and you can fall. In addition, you should theoretically never take your braking hand off the rope unless you tie a knot behind it. This problem usually occurs when you're standing on a branch and want to abseil without first putting weight on the GriGri. It's also not approved for this type of use. There are better devices for this, such as the Petzl Rig or ID, the Edelrid Megawatt. Even the Petzl Grillon, which doesn't have a spring, is better suited for this. Since you like backups, a rope or sling as a connection between the hand ascender and your climbing harness would make a good backup when climbing up the rope. If the GriGri fails, you would still be hanging on your hand ascender. The additional connection between the hand ascender and the climbing harness has now become standard when using the RAD system for us T5 geocachers in Germany. As always, I'm already looking forward to your next video and I would like to thank you again for your effort. By the way, I posted a short video of the Notch Rope Wrench Fusion Tether Combo on my channel. I will take your advice and hopefully post a detailed video for us here in Germany soon.

Thanks! I appreciate it! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for saying that I'm "smart!" I'm having a hard time visualizing a detachable Munter hitch. Never seen or heard of that one before. You should make a video about it! It would be fresh and original! It's important to always have emergency backups, and backups for your backups, when you climb trees! Especially when you do so by yourself, completely alone, like I do. As far as my preferences, I much prefer rope walking to the RADS. As I mentioned in my video, despite its name including "rapid," it's actually not that rapid and I'd take my rope wrench with a friction hitch, or my Rope Runner Pro, over a RADS any day of the week! Hugs! =-P

Another great video, Knotorious. Your videos are getting better and better all the time, and that's what counts. I've watched your camera presence improve 100% over the past year and a half that I've been a subscriber. Making and editing videos is a learning curve, just like being in the trades. Sharing your experience with us is greatly appreciated. The fastest way we improve is by watching more experienced guys, and asking dumb questions to improve our knowledge base. I don't have a Petzl hand ascender, so I'm wondering what other options I can use. Could a friction hitch attached to a carabiner be used safely? I own a Ropeman 2 by Wild Country (good for 8 to 13mm rope) that I could attach a carabiner to. And I have a 120mm sling that I could fashion into a foot loop using an overhand knot. The concept is the same, so I'll follow your configuration. Your video demonstrates a very practical technique which makes it way more efficient to ascend.

Thank you so much for your comment! I genuinely appreciate the praise and thoughtfulness! I also appreciate your long-time subscription to my channel! My channel has only been up for about 1.75 years, so you've basically been there from start and I've definitely noticed you regularly in my comments section. I'm really happy that people are noticing and appreciating all of the hard work that I am putting into my content. Unlike pretty much every other noteworthy tree climbing/arborist channel, I don't have anyone to film me or help me in anyway. I'm a one man show; I have to do everything myself and that takes a lot of time and effort. Especially during shoots. Additionally, there are no "dumb questions" on my channel. Everyone has to start somewhere and back several years ago when I first began tree climbing, I didn't know what the heck I was doing and did some questionable things. I once ascended SRS on a sketchy rope (not an arborist rope, but it was rated; but it wasn't a 10:1 safety factor haha) using prusiks and a foot loop and then, when I tried to get down, I learned the hard way that prusiks jam badly during descents. I managed to get down about 15 feet above the ground, where everything bound up so tightly I was stuck. Thankfully I was smart enough to climb with a knife (I always do) and I cut the rope and dropped to the ground. So yeah, I wasn't always this experienced haha As far as not having a hand ascender, you could definitely use a friction hitch instead and then connect an HMS carabiner to it and put a foot loop and a pulley on it. It would be a lot harder to grip the rope, though and less ergonomic. As for the Ropeman, you could do that as well, and that might be a little easier to hold onto even though it's small. You can buy hand ascenders that work perfectly fine for like $30 on Amazon. You don't need a fancy Petzl one. You'd be a lot better off if you bought yourself a hand ascender. It will allow you to fully appreciate how easy it is to climb with a proper RADS setup. EDIT: Just make sure the hand ascender has slots at the bottom and the top.

You obviously don't understand that the prusik is a TERRIBLE climbing hitch for arborist style tree climbing or for anyone who climbs SRS or MRS. Sure, you can use it on ascents, but it's useless for descents. The prusik is predominantly a rigging hitch and it's also great for progress capture for a mechanical advantage hauling or pulling system. Also, I can easily tie my Synthesis hitch just as quickly as a prusik. You shouldn't assume that everyone will tie something as slowly as you would. Anyways, thanks for the comment.

Not an arborist, but I'm intrigued by the trade because I love climbing. Seems pretty dope! Not sure if the shaking is because you're suspended above ground, because you're talking on camera, or both. But you come off as very knowledgeable and capable! I respect the effort you're putting into sharing knowledge and techniques to make others' work and life easier and safer. Keep it up, man! People like you are a genuine gift of the world.

Wow, what wonderfully thoughtful comment! Thank you! Firstly, I shake because I have a supplement-resistant vitamin B deficiency that I'm working to resolve. I get comments all the time about my shaking. I'm 100% NOT scared, I'm not on drugs, I'm not camera shy...I'm just vitamin deficient haha Secondly, I definitely have been working extremely hard to create highly educational, unique, interesting, original, and entertaining content for anyone who has an interest in arborist style tree climbing or knot tying/friction hitches. I appreciate that you recognize that. In only 1.5 years, I've uploaded nearly 350 videos, which is pretty insane haha You could say that I'm obsessed with tree climbing and YouTubing. Thirdly, I've been tree climbing recreationally for over 5 years, and I've read and watched just about everything online and on RU-vid at least once it feels like. I've also been mentored by one of the best production climbers in the US. He happened to have a friction hitch obsession like I do and he taught me A LOT in just one year's time. Anyways, I'm constantly trying to improve each new video I make. Whether that be my presentation, my ideas for content, my videography, my editing, etc. I make content because I love educating and I just love tree climbing. I hope my channel continues to grow and that maybe someday I'll be recognized by some of the big names in the field. Anyways, your comment made my day! Thank you! Be sure to check out my long form content as well! Anytime I make a Short, there's almost always a full length video that goes with it. If you ever have any questions, comments, suggestions, or just want advice or to simply talk about tree climbing, I can be reached at knotorious.contact@gmail.com

I've created over 85+ different friction hitches of all different types and complexity, so it isn't realistic for me to make a demo video for all of them. Also, I'm in the middle of moving between AZ and MA, so I won't be making any new content for a few weeks. However, what I can tell you is that, if I have the time, and if I am inspired to do so, I will make a climbing demo video and break everything down. I just recently made a quick demo video for my Blizzard friction hitch. Here is that video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tu7haYgwzTE.html Perhaps this might help you understand how they work a little better. I only demonstrate it with SRS (didn't show MRS), but still, it might be helpful. Also, here is a full breakdown of the Blizzard hitch that I made, along with slower tying instructions. I believe the Blizzard hitch is actually a better hitch than the Chemistry hitch for what it's worth. But both are great choices. Take out all the extra Spirals and you have a hitch
@Knot-orious
@Knot-orious 2 дня назад
This IS a hitch and an excellent one at that. When you say "spirals," are you referring to the adjustability/secondary stage below the coil or are you referring to the coil. Hopefully you aren't referring to the coil because then the hitch wouldn't even work. If you're referring to the adjustability/secondary stage, then you would merely be left with something known as a "Valdotain," which is one of the very first, most basic friction hitches known to man (not to be confused with the Valdotain Tresse, which is a Valdotain with braids). It's basically an autobloc that's tied using an eye to eye versus a loop. A Valdotain is not a very good climbing hitch; especially not for arborist style tree climbing. It's only useful for rigging/progress capture and requires at least 6-7 wraps in the coil to be considered safe/reliable, which is why an adjustability/secondary stage is NECESSARY for creating functional, reliable CLIMBING friction hitch. Thanks for commenting, though. Hopefully you can clarify for me what you meant by this comment!

Is there an advantage to this over a VT prusik?
@Knot-orious
@Knot-orious 2 дня назад
This will work just as well as a VT, but each hitch has some unique benefits. I dislike using the VT because it has such a long profile and tons of setback. Because of all of the braids, every time you advance the hitch during ascent, you'll be "set back," or lose," around 3" of your progress as the hitch stretches back down as you reapply your weight over and over. That won't happen with this hitch. Also, my hitch has a MUCH shorter profile, meaning it is roughly half as long as a VT, which a lot of climbers really prefer for many reasons. This makes it a better hitch for a rope wrench for example because, with a VT, it's so long that it can sometimes actually contact the wrench portion of your rope wrench, giving a climbing very little room to place their fingers above the coil to "break" (release) the hitch. With my Chemistry hitch, there will be ample room between the wrench and the top of the hitch, even if you use a shorter tether. Great question!
@christopherbedford9897
@christopherbedford9897 3 дня назад
I can see how without too much trouble that whole thing can fall apart and provide no anchor at all. The top loop could be pulled down outside the 2nd one and then the whole - what did you call it, coil? - just comes apart. Wouldn't want to stake my life on it, fer sher.
@Knot-orious
@Knot-orious 2 дня назад
I'm not sure what you're talking about. So long as both of the resulting legs are being captured by a carabiner and, so long as you don't allow the hitch to slide off of the end of your rope, there is absolutely ZERO CHANCE that this hitch would "come apart" or collapse unless you tied it wrong.

@Knot-orious
@Knot-orious 10 часов назад
I just sat down and took a hard look at this hitch, fearing that you might be onto something, and I can now confidently confirm that it would be impossible to collapse this hitch unless one or both of the legs were unsecured from the climber. Thankfully, the way you use this hitch requires that both legs be secured, so a collapse is impossible unless the hitch slides off the rope. Additionally, the more this hitch is loaded, the more secure it becomes. I appreciate you taking the time to express your concern. I took it very seriously. Based off of your comment getting more "likes" than mine, apparently some people agree with you. I'm still not even sure what you're getting at, but it was enough cause for concern that I re-examined the hitch thoroughly. I'm 100% certain I am correct. I would absolutely take the video down if I weren't. Thanks again, though.

@@Knot-orious 👍😎 Hard to explain without pictures of my own! But I was referring to the topmost part of the blue rope which I it looks like to my low-experienced eye could unravel (with enough wiggling of the orange one). Obviously if the orange rope was rigid like a pole, or under tension, that could never happen, but I thought that if the knot was tied, then moved about, and only then used, maybe 🤷‍♂ Anyway you clearly know more about this than I do 😝
@fledi2
@fledi2 3 дня назад
Is there any advantage over a standard prusik?
@Knot-orious
@Knot-orious 2 дня назад
YES! Absolutely! A standard prusik is NOT a very good climbing friction hitch at all unless all you're going to be doing is using it for ascents. If you try to descend on a prusik, even with a rope wrench, it has the potential to jam badly or engage way too hard on the rope, generating too much friction. It's also impossible to advance a prusik on a rope with a slack tending pulley because it is an omnidirectional friction hitch and locks in both directions, and because it is tied using a loop. Prusiks are only really useful for rigging, hauling, and progress capture applications or for third hands if you climb with one below a Figure 8/Rescue 8 descender. But that's only because the descender will be holding 70% of your body weight, with only 30% on the prusik, making it harder for the prusik to jam. This hitch (my Chemistry hitch) on the other hand, is a CLIMBING hitch. It is designed to be used for not only ascents, but for descents as well, and works beautifully "as is" with a moving rope system (MRS) or as part of a stationary rope system (SRS) if you add a rope wrench to it. Because of its design, it grabs just as readily as a prusik, but it will also "break" (release) way more easily for descents with no risk of jamming. It also is tied using an eye to eye hitch cord versus a loop, which means it can be used with hardware like a rope wrench or a slack tending pulley. And, finally, because this hitch is unidirectional (can only be loaded in on direction), a slack tending pulley works beautifully with it! Great question! If you have any more questions, dont hesitate to ask!

You would tie this using an eye to eye hitch cord that has either sewn or spliced eyes at each end and would be between 28-32" in length depending upon the application, rope diameter, eye to eye diameter and personal preferences. Or you could tie poacher's loops at each "undone" end to form eyes so that a carabiner can slip through.

As far as I'm concerned, and as someone who has created and tested 85+ new and original friction hitches, I have to say that this is actually quite an easy friction hitch to tie and to memorize. If you check out the long form videos and Shorts in my video library on my channel, you will see that I have created some truly "complicated" friction hitches. This hitch -- in my opinion -- is one of the most simple and straightforward friction hitches that I've created. For comparison, I'd say it's not any more complicated to tie than the Michoacán, Cornell, or Catalyst friction hitches; all of which are very popular, mainstream arborist/tree climbing hitches regularly used by climbers! Nevertheless, I value your opinion and thank you so much for commenting. Also, welcome to my channel! Be sure to check out my long form videos about tree climbing methods and techniques if that interests you! I have nearly 300 videos at this point. I also have tons of knot tying tutorials! @Knot-orious
@Knot-orious 22 часа назад
@@Ismuk Are you responding to me or the guy that said "KISS?" If you're responding to me, then my response is pretty straightforward and simple: any friction hitch worth using should be able to be released under load. So, in summary, any popular mainstream friction hitch (and all of the hitches I've created) can be released under load. However, there is a caveat when discussing SRS, because friction hitches will not work on a stationary rope system (they will either fail to release or release briefly and then jam) unless you use them with a device known as a rope wrench (which actually refers to the wrench, a tether, and a slack tending pulley). If you're asking me which friction hitches will work SRS ***without*** a rope wrench, then I can only think of a handful; maybe 4-5 hitches (such as the Sticht hitch, created by my friend Brocky; the Synergy and the PrecisionSRS 1 through 5 hitches that I created; and the Synergy X, created by a third person from the TreeBuzz forum. While I have created the most hitches of this type, the very first, and still the best, is probably Brocky's Sticht hitch. I have videos for ALL of this htiches on my channel. Just use the search function at the top of my channel page.
@maestroop4102
@maestroop4102 3 дня назад
What would you use this hitch for? Have you applied it to anything?
@Knot-orious
@Knot-orious 3 дня назад
This could be used by arborists/tree climbers for ascending and descending a rope using either a moving rope system (MRS) or a stationary rope system (SRS) with a rope wrench. This could also be used on an adjustable lanyard. This could also be used by pretty much any discipline of climber (arborist, rescue, alpine, rock, canyoner, etc.) for progress capture in a hauling/pulling mechanical advantage system or it could be used, again, to ascend or descend on a rope, among a variety of other different applications. I personally test every friction hitch that I've created and made videos for on my channel. Each of my hitches goes through a battery of different tests to ensure that each of the friction hitches I share with the world are truly safe, reliable and life supporting! I value my own safety, but I also value your safety, as well as the safety of anyone else who sees one of my hitch videos and wants to try out/use one of them at height. Thanks for commenting! Maybe in the sense that they are both friction hitches and can be used for identical applications. However, the actual tying method of the VT differs dramatically from my Chemistry hitch, and the VT has a MUCH longer profile (less compact than my hitch). Either way, thanks for commenting and sharing your opinion on my new friction hitch! =-D

That how we tied a chain around 1.5 wire rope when we moved drilling rigs in the 80s
@Knot-orious
@Knot-orious 3 дня назад
Fascinating! I have no way to confirm or deny your claim, so I'll take your word on this one! It certainly sounds plausible! This would be a great hitch for locking a chain onto a large wire rope as you describe, so it makes perfectly good sense! At least now I've rediscovered it, given it a name, and made a long and short form video to catalogue it/teach the world how to tie and enjoy it! If it were to be used in the way that you describe, it would have to be tied using one end of a chain (versus both ends of a hitch cord as shown in my video) and loaded on only one leg! That means this friction hitch has the potential to be tied with the tail of a rope or with a split tail as part of a closed or open moving rope system (MRS)! I'll have to experiment with that and give it a try! If oriented in the chirality shown in this video, it would likely work best when loaded on the right leg only and with a stopper knot on the left to prevent it from coming undone! Thanks for commenting! Great insight! =-D

That seems a lot like a midshipman hitch on a secondary
@Knot-orious
@Knot-orious 3 дня назад
If you're saying my Chemistry hitch bears resemblance to the single strand Midshipman's hitch (the cinching/adjustable/locking loop knot), I don't see the comparison at all. The two are tied very differently. A Midshipman's hitch that is tied around a rope without the loop is (I believe) the same as the Rolling hitch (here's a video for that hitch: ru-vid.comxbCPS9YgBcE) If you're saying it looks a lot like the Double Eye Midshipman's FRICTION hitch tied with an eye to eye, then a) I'm impressed that you even know about that hitch's existence because it is an extremely obscure friction hitch and b) it is still tied very differently than my Chemistry friction hitch. Here's a really old video I made showing how to tie the Double Eye Midshipman's friction hitch using an eye to eye: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1kYIJC4fNtI.html Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you! I apologize if I am! Either way, I still value your opinion and thank you for commenting! =-D
@konijntjesbroek
@konijntjesbroek 3 дня назад
@Knot-orious sorry if I offended. I learn by lumping things by similar process and the midshipmans can be made using a rolling hitch #2, creating a load bearing awning hitch to support the bind, or it can be tied internally using a rolling hitch #1 (taught in bsa, no awning hitch internal) which resembles what you've done here. More loops than the standard msh, but the same principles. Also differs in the method as it isn't self cored, but the eye is created around a secondary line. I am also curious how it plays in differently sized lines. I'd expect smaller around larger would bite a bit better, large around smaller would be pretty prone to slippage. Either way, I greatly appreciate the demo and contribution to my understanding. Will definitely be doing some testing with this.
@Knot-orious

You definitely DID NOT offend me, my friend. I just had a difficult time agreeing with your perspective. However, now that you've explained yourself a little more thoroughly, I better appreciate what you're saying. You seem to have a strong understanding of knots and I respect that. Yes, I agree that this hitch would most certainly function best when tied "smaller around larger!" If you decide to actually do some testing, let me know how it goes and what you learn from the tests! Also, be sure to check out my other videos on my channel! I make Shorts, but I also make tons of long form videos as well, so be sure to check them out as well! I also make tons of videos about arborist style tree climbing if that interests you! I buy most of my ropes, hitch cords, etc. from wesspur.com! I also buy some stuff from treestuff.com! Sometimes I buy quality stuff from Amazon as well! But wesspur.com is my absolute favorite place to buy ropes and hitch cords. Amazon has a great selection of DMM hardware for great prices! All of my carabiners are by DMM and they are triple action gated always. Mostly oval, but I also have a few HMS, and a DMM Ceros. I also bought my Rock Exotica OmniBlock (the pulley shown in this video) from eBay and the DMM Revolver Rig (shown in this video) from Amazon! So I shop around! Great question! But wesspur.com is a great place to start! I got my Treemotion harness from some obscure site in Europe because they had a massive sale. I hunt for deals without sacrificing quality ever! Thanks for saying you love my videos! I love my viewers! EDIT: The place I got my harness was Rope-Master.com

Less complex/different tying method than the Snail hitch, but I see why you view it as similar! This hitch can easily be tied with a standard eye to eye, whereas the Snail hitch requires a longer cord. Both are great hitches! I've been holding onto this video for awhile now. Trying to post some older content before my editing style changes so much that I have to remake them. I explain the situation in my latest community post. Not sure if you saw it. Thank you! You're absolutely correct! One never always knows when the need for a very particular knot may come in handy! I sometimes have to reference my own videos so that I can remember how to tie certain random, obscure knots and friction hitches that I've made content for! Anyone who thinks I have all of these knots and hitches memorized is giving me and my memory way too much credit! haha Having said that, I would say that I can tie about 50% of all of the knots on my channel from memory and perhaps maybe 20% of all of the friction hitches (including all of my 85+ original hitch creations). That's still pretty impressive if you ask me! =-P

If you compare the Sheet bend to the structure of the Lapp knot (the Quick hitch is just a slipped version of the Lapp knot, which is also a bend), you'll see that they are almost structurally identical. The Quick hitch might as well be a slipped form of the Sheet bend and very few people would even recognize that it isn't. Plus, this is a super strong and slipped knot, making it secure and fast to untie. But I can already see you scoffing at my justification for the Quick hitch from here haha Anyways, thanks for commenting! Always good to see you! It's been awhile! Stick around! Much love, buddy! =-D

@Knot-orious
@Knot-orious 6 дней назад
All you need in order to install an adjustable friction saver is a throw weight (sometimes called a throw ball), a throwline, and a rope! Here's a video I made that shows exactly how to install an adjustable friction saver from the ground! Watch the video and, afterwards, if you have anymore questions, I'd be happy to help you. Once you get the rope through the two rings, you'll be able to create a climbing system, specifically a moving rope system (MRS) AKA double rope technique (DRT). This can be as simple as a closed system using just your rope to climb with a Blake's hitch tied with the tail of your rope (this works best with 12 to 16-strand ropes) or an open system with a split tail, or a Hitch Climber setup, which involves a Hitch Climber pulley and a friction hitch tied with an eye to eye prusik/hitch cord (which you'll see me display in this video). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d20d9Acnlgg.html

Love the video and your Descending method! Just wondering not Being mean But do you normally shake like that Or is that just your nerves because you're making a video Or because you're of course in a tree dangling from a road LOL which is totally understandable. I use too do that before my big cuts For blocking a spar down. Id Have to stop and take a breath and relax or I couldnt even line my back cut up properly. Smh but that finally after doing it so much and being depressed all that went away never to return. No natter the climb even if its dead. I became numb to climbing or caring about the fear of death. I still climb with care for my life just not the fear of falling. Never lost my care for my surroundings or groundies. My attention doesn't lack or etc. Depression sucks. Took all the adrenaline out my climbs. I hate it! My climbs use to be my peace and calm and happy place. Slowly getting some of it back. Slowly. 😑 Anyways be safe Climber from SC. US. MB...

I have a Vitamin B deficiency which causes shaking and regular supplements don't seem to help very much. Might need to start getting injections or something. Not really sure. Pretty sure it's hereditary because my father shakes as well. It's harmless and it isn't uncomfortable and, quite honestly, I hardly ever notice it until someone comments on it. Even during editing, I just rarely even notice. It is what it is. Couldn't care less about it. I have so many more important things to focus on than how people perceive me. So long as I'm happy and fully functional, the shaking doesn't matter to me. Thanks for being polite when asking about it. I've had people suggest that I'm on drugs, or assume that I'm terrified, etc. You were very polite an not presumptuous. I respect that. I've been tree climbing for 5 years, YouTubing for almost 2 years (I think; maybe less?), and so I'm super confident at this point. Thanks for commenting! Be sure to check out my other videos. This is probably the most basic redirect for MRS that you can create using just a sling and a carabiner (or Revolver Rig/Roll Clip Z) and a pulley!
