There is a lot of information available about leadpipes, differences in design, material and construction and how they all affect response, sound and overall playability. When it comes down to it though, does it really make that big of a difference? In this video we compare three different sizes of S.E. Shires leadpipes (1,2 & 3) to find out; let us know what you think!
Trombone specs: S. E. Shires Custom (7YLW bell, TW47 handslide, axial flow valve section)
Mouthpiece specs: Bach 5G, gold plated rim

Hi Stanley, I would like to hear more about being 86 and playing. I am 78. Maybe Schmitt Music could help?

I like the #1 pipe on my Shires Q Bass.

Hey Keith, I recently upgraded to an S. E. Shires TBQ30GA axial valve from an old Bach 42B. As I become more accustomed to it, I tend to keep my #1 and 2 leadpipes in the case and play #3 a lot. I've decided to focus on #3 since I really like the open sound. It also helps build my embouchure for the high range. I picked up my small bore King the other day and was amazed at the ease I could pop a high Eb and F now after playing the Shires for awhile. Leadpipes do make a difference!

Pipe #3 helps tame the barkiness of the lightweight bell.

My favorite for you was the #1 pipe! I think a 1.5 would suit you perfectly!

I agree. 1.5 is the perfect tenor size. Depends on the material for the color preference.

I have experimented with the leadpipes that came with my shires TBQ36R bass trombone. I prefer the #1 size as it offers the most response and least resistance in the lower register as well as in the mid to high range. Leadpipe #2 is a second favorite pick as it is an awesome all-rounder and more open. The third leadpipe require more air to play louder and I find myself out of breath and get dizzy with it more than opposed to the other two.

Before you recapped, I preferred the #3, including in the top end. I admit to being surprised by the amount of difference made by switching leadpipes. Is the #1 any tougher to control up top? I didn't hear you strain on the #3, and thought the sound better. Frankly I'm just sitting here blown away by your ease up top. I guess I expected the #1 to be easier up there, but it didn't sound that way.

Raymond Fallon i also heard #3 as much more interesting high playing. It was smooth and dynamically variable.

Nice playing! IMHO it sounds like 3 works better with your MP and setup. I heard smoother slurs and articulations. Also, better soft loud transitions and interesting dynamic variability.

Hi Keith! I'm a big fan of your channel, I was wondering if you had experiences with different leadpipe materials and what they can do to the playing feel and sound, especially sterling silver. I'm about to by a Courtois trombone and I really like lightweight slides, but in the case of the Courtois, there lightweight slides come with the sterling silver leadpipe, I wasn't sure if I should pull the trigger given that I don't really have the chance of trying it myself.

For those of us aging bass trombone players, did you find one lead pipe more breath efficient than the others? What other variables might affect breath efficiency ... if that is not too vague a question?

Good question; I certainly noticed a difference in air usage between the three leadpipes. For me the 1 and 2 leadpipes were more efficient then the 3; while the 1 felt like it took a bit less air I also felt like I had to put more support behind it to get it to respond. That being said, when I play bass I often find a slightly more resistant setup helps with my control in the lower register. Besides the leadpipe the overall construction of the handslide can make a difference; narrower slides can provide a bit more efficiency depending on the player, as well as dual bore slides (many players find dual-bore slides to slot quicker and have more control then a single-bore slide.) The valve choice can also make a big difference; more open valves (axial-flow, Tru-bore, CL2000, etc.) are going to require more airflow to respond properly but on the flip side, for some players standard rotors can be too resistant, requiring too much effort to play and not providing the sound and playability desired. It can be very player specific ...Hope this helps. Let me know if you have more questions and I am happy to help!

I own a shires TBi27S trombone large bore. Does that horn have the capability to change out the lead pipe to a .525?

Can you tell me if shires lead pipes(and other parts) are interchangeable with say an Eastman 829g?
@SchmittMusicTromboneShop
@SchmittMusicTromboneShop 3 года назад
They are not unfortunately :( Components are interchangable between S.E. Shires Q series and custom instruments but the Eastman leadpipes/bells/valve sections/slides/etc. are built to slightly different specs...

You should compare the lead pipes on the smaller horns, the ones without f attachments..... I have been playing my #3 leadpipe, but I find it requires a lot of air and is hard to play loud.... does that make sense? Trying all my lead pipes for fun!

It's a good idea! I don't have much in the way of Shires small bore tenors at the moment but the next time I have the opportunity to put hands on a few I will see what we can do with leadpipe comparisons!

That’s the John Phillip Sousa etude out of the Rochut book. Hip, in a 1910 sorta way.
@SchmittMusicTromboneShop
@SchmittMusicTromboneShop 5 лет назад
Agreed; I also wasn’t treating it quite like I would normally play a Rouchut to demonstrate a heavier, more seperated style...

Exactly so! They offer a whole additional range of sound/response/feel options to the process and can really fine-tune an instrument to a player's needs! Is there a particular setup you prefer?
