Description of the fuze used in the "Bouncing Betty". In this video I show how it works, Dry fire, Live fire, and then explain some of the things I needed to do to partially restore her to working condition. Hope you enjoy it. The live fire is partially off screen (in my excitement sorry) I will try to make a Video of it firing when completely restored.

My first thought was the germans really like the roller locking machanism. Their small arms designs during and after the war are known to use rollers to lock the firing chamber breach, and they are pretty much the only one doing it. Also I've seen this roller design elsewhere. Mr. BulletFeeder makes a bullet feeding die with rollers normally pushed in to hold the bullet in place. But when a cartridge case pushes the roller carrier up, the rollers are allowed to move out of the way and the bullet will be dropped onto the case mouth. It's a really ingenious design.

it sounds weird, but the kick starter lever from my Yamaha Banshee ATV also has a similar mechanism inside. a steel BB pushes against a spring, when the kick starter is pivoted either out or in. this way, the lever will not rattle around and keeps it in place, when the kick starter is no longer needed.

Once that screw comes off with the washers the wires should come out easily enough unless there is corrosion and then it is just to dip it in a penetrant and hope they come out in one piece.

I don't think there's any best bet what to do once you step on it. If it's not the shrapnel, then it's overpressure of the actual blast. So, if possible, two things can save: distance, and cover.

lol, cool,thats good to hear, i have a couple of these and one of them is missing that little spring on top and the ball bearing where the safety goes in,if that safety has a little round nut of sorts what was the point of having the little spring and ball? one of my fuzes is missing one of the ball bearings that holds the plunger, do you know where i could find one and or what size they might be? Ive seen your other videos,they are awesome, so i had to ask , how did you make new sensor\antennae for your fuze? they look killer!! thank you much for your time!!
@Stray03
@Stray03 7 лет назад
To give some positive pressure so that it doesn't fall out or get pulled out before you are ready to pull it out. You could tie a string to these and pull it from a distance to put some distance between you and a mine in case the fuze failed somehow. Having that detent ball keeps you from accidentally pulling the safety pin out just by holding the string as you walk away from the mine. I made the prongs with the stiffening wire from a material duct tube of sorts (the wire was already spring steel so it was stiff and flexible). Was about right so I sanded it down, got the bends about right then for the hell of it put it into homemade parkerizing solution. Turned out nice so I kept it like that.
@dntlss
@dntlss 7 лет назад
Cool,i made some the other day from some welding rod or something related to welding our welding guy gave me at my work,its not as stiff as the original but its plenty stiff,it doesn't look half bad, those whiskers look like heck after being outside for years and years, i might mess with something different but for now it looks good,i appreciate your input and i like your videos, i subscribed.
@Stray03
@Stray03 7 лет назад
As for finding a new ball and spring, you may be able to use a spring from a disposable lighter or pen and the bearing probably from either those cheap pinball toys the dollar stores used to sell as party favors, or maybe from a bearing (maybe in a harddrive?) Thanks for the sub.Technically if the whiskers work for one use then they did their job, and unless you are planning on using it as some sort of re-enactment mine That will be stepped on they don't have to be spring steel, Glad you found a way to "Complete" the mine does your's work? These things are made so well, sometimes I have a hard time getting around the fact that they were built to be destroyed lol.

In your Piat 425 piece, you used a 3D printed model for demonstration. I imagine 3D printers could replace machining of parts, thus reducing labor and costs?
@Stray03

For certain parts yes even some can be completely made with 3d printing. Even using stampings made the fuzes easier and cheaper to make. Most of the german fuzes from the 40s are simple compared to the 35 models.
