This was recorded at The Aquarius Group in Dallas on Jan. 1st, 1990. It was his home group & the last New Year he'd ever have. Stevie was my sponsor & I'm still clean & sober. RIP my Brother, RIP.....

Thank you for posting this. I see in the comments some think releasing this is wrong because it's private and they could be right. But this being Stevie Ray Vaughan, a lot of struggling alcoholics and drug abusers might listen to him more than an average Joe. I think Stevie would've wanted this this be heard because if it helps someone get on the road to sobriety it would be worth it. That's just my opinion. SRV Forever

I have deepest respect for Stevie Ray Vaughan as as ingenious musician and a truly genuine person.I went to an AS meeting,(in sierra vista,az.)not as an alcoholic but drug addict. The people were rude toward and basically told me I didn't belong or wasn't wanted there. They told that their group was strictly for alcoholics and not addicts.A very real turn-off experience it was.r.i.p.Stevie

Very true, I wouldn't be listening to this if it were not told by an inspiring musician who I look up to. It's crazy how much I can relate...I feel like I am the person as him, but not as bad into the drugs but definitely not on the right path. I'm definitely an alcoholic and SRV is too and got clean for not for the sake of music, but for the sake of himself. I'm 35, been a blues musician for 20+ years and I'm not sure I even know who I am after watching this. I know what I am. But who am I. All I know is alcohol. Barstools. (I haven't been in bar in years) ...but I still drink as much at home as if I were in a bar every night closing it down. Thank you SRV for showing me the way and to not be afraid to ask for help. Thank you Brother.

I never expected the man who could make music that seemed humanly impossible, to express himself with such humanity and humility. I identified with what he said about getting to a point where the idea that his "growing" was "like something he "couldn't reach anymore...something that I just could dream about." I'm an alcoholic in my 9th month of sobriety and this is helping tonight and will help me tomorrow. In the rooms or on the street, you never know who is going to be the voice of God . This is amazing- thank you for posting this. I would have never been able to hear this otherwise (obviously). My dad was an alcoholic, but seeing that made me not drink ever. This is very interesting to hear because I always wonder why musicians who become addicts don't ever learn from the musicians before them who were addicts (and often died from it). Stevie is why I HAD TO buy a guitar in 1997- I really appreciate being able to hear about his homelife growing up. Fighting parents caused me to close my bedroom door and escape in music- and I can play guitar almost as good as Stevie (thanks to obsessive practicing for many years). Thanks for uploading. On a technical note for anyone out there, reduce pitch 1 semitone to get the "speed" of the recording corrected. Thank you for sharing this. This definitely came at the right time this year for me. Maybe could've come sooner but, like he says, I kinda "saw it coming" in my life too. One hard day came when I realized I had to stop, but I needed to first figure out how to stop and who could help me stop. Now after about 5 months, and the pandemic, a lot of my perspectives of things have changed. Not just drug use, but...people, life, the way we each live our lives, what makes people tick...both good and bad...etc.

Life's a bitch and then you die. That's Stevie's story. At least he had some good times and made some legendary music along the way. It just really hurts me to think that he went through the hell of kicking the alcohol and drugs, then he was killed. Maybe it was fate that his life was cut short and he no longer has to deal with his inner demons on a daily basis. I too am an addict, 5 years clean. Tommy Shannon said when someone told Stevie they were struggling with drugs and alcohol and asked how did he quit Stevie would just get exited cause he enjoyed helping people. It's a shame he died so young he was such a good soul, gave great music, insperation, heart, and help to those struggling with drugs and alcohol. I don't for the life of me understand some of the hate in the comment section. I guess some people are just so full of hate that they have to roam the internet looking for places to spew their anger.

Stevie was my inspiration to get clean.... I went clean in the Summer of '90....then he passed away in August. I've been completely clean and sober ever since....33 years now. Stevie literally saved my life and he never even met me.

As for myself, I know for a fact that I have about a 300 percent chance of becoming an alcoholic due to both of my parents being alchoholics and my mother drinking heavily while pregnant with me (side note: ladies, don't _ever_ knowingly drink while you're pregnant, *your child will hate you forever* , I assure you...). This is something that hangs over my head like a specter every day. To the folks struggling with alchoholism I say: stay strong, to anyone else thinking of drinking and who _isn't_ addicted, pregnant, etc.: moderation or not at all. Bad habits are easy to quit if you never start them in the first place... R.I.P., Stevie Ray Vaughn, a damn great guitarist, an even greater human being. Thank you for being a good man in spite of it all and inspiring me to try to be the same, Sir... I'm feeling low? Don't need a beer, I just need to pick up "Naomi" and play... ;)

I played rude mood at a little country gig for a friend of mine, and If was the most surreal experience because it was the best I've ever played it. the buzz had warn off, but I found myself a bit more sneaky with alcohol than ever before (which isn't very, I typically don't drink but I saw a different pattern that night) a few people said stevie was looking down that night, but that night I got pulled over and I had a bottle of jack in the glove compartment and it was like a nightmare, and at that moment, I knew I was done. however, I was NOT intoxicated, I passed, and the law states that it just needs to be locked in the glove compartment, I explained I didn't have the key to lock it and I got off with a speeding ticket, a handshake and a couple new people to come watch me play. I listened to this speech and got the chills, I think Stevie gave me a bit of a reality check I needed with God's permission. I can't wait to see what I can do on the stage sober. thanks for posting this!

I been to this giant statue of Stevie Ray Vaughan and I looked at this statue and thought to myself man you must of made one heck of a mark if you get a statue made of you just for playing guitar and singing then I thought about how great Stevie Ray was and then I thought oh ok I see.

You hear Wisdom beyond his years in this speech, he loved blues, he loved his brother, and eventually he loved himself and realized how important he was to others and that was the motivating factor to keep him sober

CONGRATS!! My 17th AA Bday Was April 8....& I Restarted & Rededicated Myself To My Program...Even Tough I'm Still Not Drinking...The Hard Work Is SO Worth It!! I Knew - When I Saw Stevie & DT For The Last Time - July 17, 1990 - What A HUGE Deal Stevie Sharing His Story With People Was....& I Told Him That! I Hope His Audiences & Fans HEARD Him! Stevie Truly CARED About People Not Living In The Same Hell He Had Come Thru - & Cared That People Not Die That Way!....He KNEW What A GIFT That His Still Being Alive To Tell The Tale In 1990 Really Was! I Was Dealing With Alcoholism That Almost Killed Me Twice In 3 Weeks, But I Did Not Have The Extra Deadly Addiction Of Cocaine That Stevie Had To Overcome...I BLEW Me Away How He THREW Himself Into This Program Totally & Really GOT IT...You Can Hear It In How He Talks About How He Saw HIMSELF Change - I Heard Those Amazing Changes In Him In His Music After 1986 - Especially Live - It Was A Beautiful Thing To Watch! I Still Miss Stevie SO Much - But He Left His Heart With Those Of Us Who Still Remember Him & Still Love His Music! God🙏BLESS You, Stevie💗SOUL💞SOUL😘

It was so sad when we lost this man. RIP Stevie. I started drinking at 8 also. Sober since 1990 myself and forever grateful. I got sober In Dallas. I remember the Aquarius group. I got sober at the gift in Irving then moved to Carrollton and new home group was Addison group. I now hail in TN but miss Texas AA. I love AA anywhere but I guess where you get sober will always be special.

The more I look learn about SRV, Eric Clapton, etc... As a blues musician, I am learning I am following the same road. SRV is someone I've come to look up to. This has been truly inspiring. I'm in tears because I just realized I too, need help. Stevie is an absolute hero. Legend. And much much more. Long live SRV!! A man with a great heart and soul.

SRV is man who has dealt with many trials and tribulations as many of us have. I believe what made him pull through each time was his determination to overcome. I have experienced this "determination" myself. It works. Please know that once your mind is made up to do something, it WILL happen. You have already won half of the battle. RIP SRV. You have taught us so much. We love you.
