Sometimes Rachmaninov four concert sounds like. It will be affected by strong prejudice. It will be because of my humble ear. Eventually the rendition is excellent. Interpretation is gorgeous. It is my precious experience.
As a cellist myself and having heard this piece played many times this cellist in my opinion plays this better than almost anyone . . . Better than Harrell and Ma. The phrasing is what made it a clear winner as well as the amount of silk and pearls he's able to get out of his cello. You hear clearly many of the notes that seem to simply disappear with other cellists . . . BRAVO!!!
This is very fine and nuanced performance, but I'd also urge listening to the Harvey Shapiro and Earl Wild recording and also the one by Karine Georgian and Vladmir Krainev.
These performers are not known to me. Christoph Croisé is very good. But what an amazing accompanist Alexander Panfilov is! I almost felt like I was listening Gerald Moore - the legendary accompanist - accompaning someone. Bravo to both of them and thanks for uproading this!

Amazing. Outstanding coordination and complicity between the two instruments. It is played with might and passion but they allow room for delicacy and detail in a way that I haven't heard in any other version of this sonata. Thank you for this wonderful performance!!!

In this case, do pianists really sightread? Or do they mostly know the piece but still use the sheets just in case they have a memory slip? Or is it just a kind of humility sign, meaning "I'm not the soloist so I'm not supposed to know my part by heart even if I actually do"?
