Are you familiar with NES Remix on Wii U and 3DS? It's kind of exactly what you were describing. This but not so grounded. Though I wouldn't be surprised if this is made by the same team. I wish and hope this leads to some Remix appearing on the Switch.
It's weird that he considers Balloon Fight the worst one considering Ice Climber, a game where ledges can and cannot exist at the same time, is on the list.
@@grapesoftime I actually don't like Balloon fight, but he was complaining about a lot of games that he's never played and never bothered to learn and just said the missions were 'stupid' and/or random.
The first Kid Icarus challenge being the hardest is 100 percent true to the experience of playing the full game. It starts off brutal, and then gets way easier once you're past the first level.
20:10 the koopa's position isn't different, Luigi just has lower traction than Mario so he's slightly slower getting going. Side note, I remember watching one of your super vintage streams of Mario Bros 2 lost levels (snes version) where you played as Luigi for your first ever time beating the game. Thought it was hilarious because talk about a brutal introduction.
Balloon Flight is just controlling with accelerations instead of direct movement, if that wasn't the case there would be no challenge/point in the game. I'm sure you can get used to it, Ice Climber physics is harder to control
Balloon Fight was one of the games we loved and played the most as kids XD We rarely played alone tho, so maybe it's simply a better experience with the chaotic, "floaty" controls when you have someone to laugh and get into a mild panic with?
I was hoping to see Kid Icarus. I played it a lot when I was a kid, and remember it being both very difficult, and somehow mysterious-I had no idea where I was supposed to go, what I was supposed to do, nor what most of the items did. Getting turned into an eggplant was always funny though.
The mysterious factor really helped those older games. Since there wasn't an internet or RU-vid to look things up you had to rely on your own exploration or your friends to help you out. It was always fun to figure things out on your own😁
Even worse is some of the challenges have straight up RNG you have to overcome. You can get patterns fighting Wispy Woods for example, that make an S rank impossible
I appreciate how fast you put up this follow-up. Thanks so much! Also, I'm sorry you soured on the game so fast. You were so excited early on. I'll be on the look out for the Legendary video!
1:10:59 I think it still has potential in a Trackmania/Mario Makerway where a person can go into a game, set a goal and start point then run the challenge themselves and post it for other people to try. Trackmania has a mechanic called the "Author Medal" where the person who creates/posts the level can race their track and choose a run to set as the standard time for people to beat. Use that as the S rank here and you have yourself a game.
Great to hear you love Zelda II too! Finished it many times. Killer music too! This game is indeed not that great. Fun for a moment but gets quick boring. So yeah I agree 100% with your opinion. Also if you love Zelda II play also BATT:E OF OLYMPUS! I only finished it once....But damn, what a great game and also killer music!!
At first I wasn't sure if I'd like this game. I absolutely love it. I've never really tried speed running any games. I love the challenge of the speed running mode. Not only am I getting better with every attempt, when I go play the full length games on ninetndo switch online NES I've noticed I'm better 30-38 years later on all them. It's a great feeling.
Ryuuuu!! We want the raw experience. 😀 Watching you tweaking and finetuning every movement and saving some miliseconds here and there is so satisfying. The 4 hours were great!! In case it's boring we can fast forward by ourselves. Thank you, man! Love you! 🙂
If you choose to play Kid Icarus, play the 3D Classic version on 3DS if you can. New backgrounds for all stages. Saves instead of passwords, Famicom music, and no slow downs.
The world championship could provide so much more gameplay by making it a bit more interesting. Making it different games each time would be the biggest help, but even different modes like double elimination, team mode, voting on the game, or some type of draft. The best moment was in Mario 2 when the guy skipped the carpet entirely and jumped over the gap. It would be great if more challenges had different strats like that which weren't immediately known.
I like the fact that the tutorial challenges are easy to complete but hard to get S ranks on unless you really know what you are doing (for the most part)
Kirby was - and still is - a very good game with a lot of hidden stuff and one of the best NES endboss fights ever. In my opinion it is one of the best Kirby games that have been released until today.
I'm surprise they don't mention in the Kirby's challenge that you can slide by pressing down and the jump button. It could help a lot with some ground ennemies
The Legacy Mega Man collection challenges are much more challenging and more creative, though kinda less accesible. I don't mind too much the 'play the whole stage' challenges here as some building skills toward a longer speedrun categories (Anecdotally, there's a Zelda II 'Horsehead' speedrun category extension that's about the same as the legendary challenge + walking from the start of the game and the record for the palace part is about 2:45; 3:19 total). The problem is this game never goes further than some introductory stuff and the very short challenges feel like mario party minigames.
Regarding those RNG-dependent segments, I suspect the RNG is tied to your movement or the amount of time that passed or something. Something similar happens with the Zelda segments, where sometimes the movement of the enemies is different and sometimes it’s predictable as long as you can replicate your exact or very similar inputs at key points. In this way, it’s actually fairly easy to manipulate said RNG to your favor, which makes the whole thing much more manageable.
I would love to see a playthrough of the Zelda 2 remake. Its a fan-made port of the original, but with some changes that flesh out the game considerably. It made a splash a handful of months ago, and was quickly recognized as the definitive way to play Zelda 2. Anyway, this version of the game is currently my second favorite in the franchise, only beaten out by the mac daddy itself, LttP.
Ryu hating on Balloon Fight is jabbing me right in the childhood. "Controls are garbage" bro have you tried being good at video games? (Okay actually looked like you were getting the hang of it at the end). Also 2-player co-op (for a little bit) was the only way to play.
This game and it's challenges just seem like a repackaged NES Remix to me I played a lot of Balloon Fight as a kid and I love that game! :) I also played a bunch of Kid Icarus. It's also a really fun game but quite difficult
SMB1 having 'beat the whole game' as the final challenge gave me hope, but then everything afterword kinda sucks. it also sucks how there's no leaderboards and the required time for S rank seems to get more lenient the longer and more complex the challenge is. like the first smb1 ones take some serious thought and execution, but then the whole game one requirement is 7 minutes, and it holds your hand and doesn't let you die the whole way through. if it was like the first couple challenges the requirement for S should be like 5:10 or so.
I really hope they add way more content then what is here. The game has so much potential if they give it a bit if love. Still going to pick it up though
I think what would have been nice is to have each of these games to be fully unlocked to play and leaderboards for speedruns of the full game. The challenges feel like its training for getting into speedrunning each of the games but then you can't do that.
Honestly, it feels like a Nintendo is testing grounds. Maybe its a proof of concept to add features to switch online? It seems to me itd be easy to add a watch and leaderboard to switch online in general. The more challenging part would be to to curate game sections challenges kinda like this game does. But is that needed though
You sound like a fan of Nintendo with your feedback. There's often a disconnect from creators at a corporate world and the people who enjoy the product with passion and vision level sometimes.
