S.S. Stewart "Universal Favorite" banjos were made in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1880s-1910s. Sam Stewart, the company's owner, died in 1898, and banjos with serial numbers higher than ~ 50000 are likely to have been made after his death. Note that the quality of Stewart banjos noticeably declines during this period. This fine example of his "Universal Favorite" is a No. 3 model bearing serial # 17243 was built circa 1896.

That inlay is is too much for my eyes. The carved heel on the other hand is super cool. Also never seen the inside of the pot so decorated, that is pretty interesting.

I have a weird question, how do you navigate finding info on these old banjos? I have a John C Haynes 1890s The Lewis Banjo and the ONLY info I can find on it was from the people who posted the ads themselves Which isnt much other than construction notes. Like I love her and would love to know more about this quirky little banjo.

Hi Clifton. I was wondering if you have any experience with the gold tone plucky and what your thoughts on it are as I'm considering getting one as my first banjo as I kinda like how comfy and mobile it is. I know it isn't a conventional banjo and that it is a bit of a novelty but I thought I would ask anyway. Thank you.

I’ve played one. They’re pretty good little travel banjos, but be aware that they’re VERY small. When you start going past the 5th fret down the neck, things get quite crowded.

At least they know Clif up and down the line and now they know about the banjo on his mind. The inlay in that neck is nearly as fancy as that picking. Someone has put a lot a love in to making that little bugger.

Definitely one of those Victorian era status pieces
@zachb8012
@zachb8012 Год назад
I looked at an inflation calculator. This thing retailed for $20 in 1896, which would've cost you about $718.26 relatively. Lotta detail went into that fingerboard and heel carving. Just an astoundingly beautiful instrument but I don't particularly care for the tone. Could be the recording or maybe it just doesn't mesh well with nylgut strings, but it sounds a little tinny.

@@zachb8012 i think the Consumer Price Index is a better calculator to follow. My guess is that price would be higher

@@zachb8012also, the #1 retailed for $20, this #3 with all of its optional extras would've cost around $60 in 1896, according to the Stewart catalogue.

SS Stewart was the man who made the banjo a work of art which then made it more appealing to ladies but his banjos were superior to anything the Dobson's designed and at least Stewart made his branded banjos whereas Dobson's were made by Buckbee in New York for the most part. That banjo is just exceptional but I know what you are saying about the inlays, would take some getting used to. Thanks for sharing.

You could say that. What they were really _made_ for was parlor music and virtuoso "guitar style" banjo picking.

What a beautiful Stewart. I bought a banjo I have been after for the best part of twenty years around a fortnight ago. I managed to find an S S Stewart Special Thoroughbred in really good original condition, proper tail piece and everything… I was delighted at just how well these fine old Stewart banjos play. Love the video and I’ve been watching your videos for years now and they are always informative and entertaining. Thank you for doing what you do. 🪕

That is a beauty! I also have a #3, but mine is a Thoroughbred after after Stewart’s death… 73,000 or there bouts probably 1900ish. Has the same beautiful marquetry as yours on the inside of the pot, not quite as elaborate pearl work as yours but close and there is no engraving on my pot, but the damn thing look’s practically brand new! No tarnishing, dents or bumps! I couldn’t believe it when I unboxed it and took it out of it’s case! Looks like no one ever played it! Thanks so much for sharing this!
