this was one of those turning points in the sri lankan history and also i believe it was a selfish one at the same time.If it wasn't for this decision sri lanka would have been a better place internationally also people like us wouldn't have required to go leave this country!!!!

@nazurcolombo09 There is a class in Sri Lanka that uses English as a cut throat tool, they and their children mock the people who cannot speak English and they take great pride in their privileged life style. If the education system had been in English even the farmers would speak in English, simply because SL has an over 90% literacy rate. Then English would not be used to judge an individual. The upper middle class likes this video because they can relate to him.

This man is the creator and culprit of the Sinhala and Tamil conflict in Sri Lanka which dragged the country into a 30 year civil war loosing billions of dollars for the economy and most important costing thousands of innocent lives from both sides. He was the person to start the civil war. 33% of population is not minority but a constituent ethnicity. French speaking Belgians would start a war too, if Flemish imposed the use of Flemish on the French-speakers.

My understanding is that, what this 2nd or 3rd PM of SL did 60-70yrs back, a shrewd Politcs of Using Anti Minority sentiment to enflame divisive or discriminative feeling of farmers/ villagers/ peasants etc type voters to win election that copycated by India before & lately, i.e Modi enflaming Hindu majority against Muslims, Trump in US enflaming uneducated rural white support against new Immigrants, blacks, Latino, also both M, G Rajapks brothers enflaming same ideas as this original SL PM (BandraNak), Just to win elections. But big draw backs are like in US & India too the hate of minority can turn into violent attacks/ Rioting etc or minorities taking up Arms all happened & Happening in all 3 Countries, in different levels that equally destroys economy, harmony etc for few years & resentment & underground moments begin to thrive, etc. All 3 countries seen minority rising in the 60s 70s & now too, it can win election & make PMs very Rich but destroys the country for years.
This is further evidence , that there is no correlation between being articulate, and being intelligent. It also might prove that unlike previously thought, a good education could be a waste.
His intelligent was how to take power i.e defeat the popular UNp Gov, quickly, so his family become rich millionaires$s , and that this narrow vision of greed not included country wide growth, harmony & prosperity for rest, that, like u r pointing out, wasn't his forte ( intellect) knowingly or not. & As I read & seen in some vlogs too, that there were massive protests, riot, his own assasiination, recession under his wife's gov.e.g., no rice, no sugar, no veges etc for the mass for years. & All prev 10+ yrs growths got halted till to the day now more or less. (noted when progress happening due to local & international economic reasons, Gov should not sit back & enjoy his((PM's) own wealth but help spreading it with sound plans down to farmers, labourers, poor by doing little boosts here& there, continually, as they're the 40-50% people (but not blaming other minorities i.e., stoking fears, just for their own gains & continuous Corruptions including prev Un party probably didn't help some more for poorer population )

A hypocrite if ever there was one! He was educated at the best university and college money could buy...and then he went and introduced his short sighted policy. Funny that he did not send his own children to a sinhalese speaking school at the time. All his children attended Christian/ Catholic English speaking school!
The best solution to all of this is to consider English, Sinhala and Tamil to be the 3 official languages of the country I know some would not agree though
The 13th amendment to the constitution of Sri Lanka gave official language status to all three languages and now it is an utter mess. English, which is nobody's mother tongue, is becoming the language of power, and those who are deprived of it are victimised. So, learning English has now become the rage among the common public and the native languages are ignored altogether!
He was a well educated and well dressed gentleman. but in order to become the first prime minister of Ceylon, he took such a decision with out second thought. poor Sinhalese people or poor thamil people never cried for their language they wanted to learn English that is the truth. the Sinhalese and tamil politicians took the languages as their weapons to go to parliament. but their children don't know either Sinhalese or tamils. they all studied out of sri lanka .

I went STC and played Rugby - great school, but it was built for europeans. The British never imagined that their empire would end. Once they left - natives who went to the 4 Church of England schools, STC, Trinity college, Ladies college and Bishops college had an advantage over the rest of the population. While my mother ., sister and I benefited, i don't think the British public school system is fair for Sri Lanka. SWRD is a case study. His ancestry is dubious. He was an Indian , catholic from his mother side and Anglican from his fathers side. What does this Oxford educated scum bag do ? Set the Buddhists to kill off the Hindus.
People are missing the point. The name Solomon was the King of Israel who reigned when it achieved rest from bloody wars for 40 yrs. He's said to have possessed wisdom unlike anyone before or since. Despite his God given wisdom, he made too many foolish decisions and the kingdom began to crumble when his son took over and divided into northern and southern kingdom. The same can be said of this PM. Under his reign for the first time ever a generation of people arose, who could not speak to each other as they all were forced to learn everything in their mother tongue. He was no visionary and failed to see that a common international language would not only enable people to communicate not just among themselves but with the world at large. 2ndly it was his ' political gamble ' to obtain majority vote to become the 1st PM, guess why? The majority were Sinhalese speaking. By forcing the 1st generation entering schools to study in their mother tongue ( except his own children-- double standards), he divided the country, not to mention the gradual exodus of the educated public who saw through all of this - resulting in a never ending ' brain drain' . Did India make this mistake ? Nehru was also Oxford educated. He was politically mature statesman, who knew better than to play around with language issue with 18 official languages. Look where India is today in every field of expertise! India won over China with the ' outsourced industry ' with all major global conglomerates and can manufacture just about anything and everything because they kept English. Far more people are studying English in China ( they are shrewd ) that the rest of the world combined. See where they are headed too. The next global international language may be Mandarin /Cantonese. What is wrong in learning more languages. Who has the right to restrict anyone from learning any number of languages. Only Politicians. Statesmen who truly care about their future generations would never do what SWRD did. When it resulted in 2 groups of people, being unable to communicate/understand each other it bred eventually a 30 yr civil war in 30;s after he passed and took out 2 generations of children. What good is polish when a person is a total disaster as a leader ? Please give it up.
After making sinhala the national language he sent his children to study overseas and also spoke to them in English at home.He is a great example of a true hypocrite.He ruined the name of his alma mater, St Thomas' college Mt Lavinia, which produced super human quality leaders such as Hon D.S.Senanayake and his son Dudley Senanayake.
He did make sinhalese the official language to win the election mainly, sending his children to learn English and speaking English at home. He created the inferior generation. 2 tier systems, who are cursing even today for being unable to progress without English. They have to learn English with private tuition to get jobs in banks, etc. We could have got many call centre jobs, which went to India who spoke English. SHAME ON YOU SELFISH BANDA, WE CURSE YOU.

"Ponnambalam ramanathan" was born in india and later migrants to ceylon and british gave him to place in ceylon government who even didn 't knew much about ceylonese culture 🧐
When you closely study the history, this man made the turning point to embrace the rich history back. The destroyed Sinhalese culture slowly had been restored. I am proud to have learn my English while rightly claiming the ownership of a greater and richer language. Thanks to you a sarong wearing man is still a gentleman... A saree is still respected. !!!

People who comment against his decision are the same who highly admire when Putin is speaking in Russian in world stages so as German, Chinese leaders. These are the set of people which Jackson Anthony calls 'Kalu Suddo' in his video series. Without an identity, a nation with a history of 2500+ years can't rise. If you look from a 3rd eye it is very clear how Sri Lankans resist a development like Singapore, but any other country who nurtured the roots. FYI: Sri Lanka is the only nation in the world speaks Sinhalese, other than Sinhalese diasporas.

Well I am a Tamil. On neutral grounds, he did what was right to cultivate and preserve the Sinhalese Language. As we all know Tamil is spoken everywhere in the world including Sri Lanka. We have a Tamil Nadu in India ....... I guess the PM wanted a Sinhalese Nadu ...... That's it ..... simple. Now, "technically" this move of making Sinhalese the National Language does not mean Sinhalese is in favor of a majority ruling race. I believe in the speech, the PM made a mistake. He should have not mention the 70% majority over 30% minority being the reason the Language was chosen. That was as if he was literally giving authority to a majority "Sri Lankan" born. That statement ...... changed everything. The PM should have just said "Let's have a national Language, Sinhalese is a rare Language so let's preserve it"

The vast majority of Sri Lanka Muslims originated from West Bengal, Kerala or Oman( Marakkala from Arabian Peninsula)-- hence technically you are most likely of Bengali origin -- and not a Tamil. Tamils are people whose origins are from Tamil Nadu, and they are Hindus. Puzzling as to why a majority of Muslims who speak Tamil think they are Tamils.

Mohamed Nahu Actually what he did was not right. Preserving Sinhala is understandable but not at the expense of the Tamil language which is a link to the identity and culture of many people. Just because Tamil is spoken by people around the world doesn't mean Sri Lankan Tamils should lose their mother tongue. Who's going to teach them their language? Should they go back to India for that? What was done was done for power. What should have been done then is that both Sinhala and Tamil should have been made official languages with English being the link language like at present

He studied in Oxford. Was speaking only English. Was born and raised in a Christian family. Its amazing the courage and intelligence he had to kick all those things and take the side of poor Sinhala people those days. Not only he kicked "only English known" policy making Sinhala lobby in sri lanka, He also left Christianity. British and BBC knows much more about him than us :) Because he was the man who came from UK and divided "British made" UNP in to two pcs and made the first "national" political party against it. There is no such thing in this world as "gaining independence". Its an ever lasting battle with enemy. Otherwise there was no need to create SLFP in sri lanka because Bandaranayaka knew that enemy left after placing the black skilled puppets in every powerful positions. They left us because they lost the bigger deal, India. The same Puppets rose again in 1977 and soon began the war, and kept feeding it for 3 decades (from our tax money) against us.

The British used this to their advantage and sent court attendance documents in English, especially documents concerning land matters such as acquisition by the Surveyor Generals Department. Since most farmers did not understand English, they either had or rely on official translators or other unscrupulous parties. Most villagers found these letters offensive and ignored these letters or did not attend courts and their lands were acquired by the state. The point is, English as the official language disenfranchised the vast majority of Non- English speaking populations-- both Tamils, Tamil speaking Muslims and well as the Sinhalese. SWRD should have emphasised the fact that English as the Official language as disenfranchised the majority of the citizens.
Your correct. I am a tamilan. I agree sinhalese should be given 1st priority. But tamil and English also should be given 2nd position. Which of course is the situation now. but sinhala only act 1956 created the problem. Tamil was included decades later around late 1960s, but by the time, Tamil people psychologically affected

All he had to do was make no language or religion compulsory or an act. The policy should have been people have the right to follow or speak any language they like. Schools should have had all three language offerings and a parent to choose what stream they want their kids to study. People should have been given the option to follow their own religion. Simple example, look at how prosperous all the other commonwealth countries are today

Mother of all blunders! His decision paved the way for the evolution of ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka. At that time, the politicians did not know that the decisions they made would have a huge impact on the relationship between the Sinhalese and the Tamils. They have not changed even now! History is repeating itself in Sri Lanka.
Him and his class wanted to stop, prevailing English language in the society. They knew that, letting expos all countrymen to this universal language, will lead to educated society and it would be not an easy task to govern them, and the same time they realized, knowing this language, will create an equal society in the island and their class may dissolve in that, so his class may not be distinguished. that's why he brought this language chaos. Bandaranayaike's are not even sinhala. His ancestors are Naicker clan came three generations ago as mercenaries from India to support kandy rajathani and serve nayakar kings. And his forefathers are known for their PUKK service to their colonial masters..
Bandaranayakes were at first Bandas that came to town. then became Bandaras and after deciding to play sycophant to the English added the nayaka part to the name, hense Bandaranayake. They were not from Nayaka origins. My ancestors were from Kerala and helped the Kandyan Kings to protected national integrity from being infiltrated by the Portuguese and Dutch. Unfortunately a Sinhalese's betrayed his own people.. This breed of people (bandaranayakas) are a week offshoot from amongst the Sinhalese. Most probably rehabilitated padda or rodi .
This is well spoken? Maybe without swearing and general nonsense that politicians produce these days, but that has to be one of the most condescending speeches ever given by a prime minister that decided that Tamil 'also' should be a minority national language. His eloquence was perhaps the agent that fed his racist ideas to the men and women of this country.

Adopting Sinhala as the "official language" in a country where cabinet meetings were (and still are) conducted in English was merely the first of a series of questionable measures. The language decision served as a wayof legitimizing a series of still worse decisions which ultimately marginalized the Tamils and blocked their access to many parts of Ceylonese society - to such an extent that they took up arms against it - with disastrous results for everyone, Sinhalese and Tamils alike.
Millions of Sri Lankans have suffered in various ways due to their lack of English knowledge, especially speaking the language. He is totally responsible for this situation.
Singapore was under british rule and became indipendent in similar time. Singapore was also a diverse country like ceylon with a majority chinese speaking population.Its leader Lee Kuan Yew decided to make English its official language because he valued ethnic peace in the country more than false pride and getting votes based on racial political campaigns. Look at Sigapore and look at Sri Lanka. Its time at least now understand that what we have been doing all these years was wrong and Bandaranaike was most definietly wrong cus not only that he destroyed the private sector businesses with nationalization policies which was the worst of his bad descisions
Yes. He started to ruin sri lanka changing sinhala as the national language in one night, causing problem to tamil using tamils and muslims. The first seed to grow ethnic problems. But he sent his children to Europe and made them study good english.
So present day ministers are sooo dignified eh? That must be why our country has such a GREAT standard, reputation and image to the rest of the world. The english might have been looters, but their education made SOME of the best leaders in this country, not only in politics, but science and business regardless of how wrong the english were to dominate our country DECADES back. without that education our country is freaking nowhere. culture is a different thing, dont mix the two up.
