Every now and then I get the opportunity to make something a little unusual and special. The Burns' Bench is one of those projects. Based on a design shown to me by its creator - my cousin John, it’s made of white oak which is a joy to work with, and finished with Tung Oil for a hard-wearing and shiny protective coat.

Lovely finish with the combi of the stain and tung oil mate. Really makes the grain stand out doesn't it. That rich brown colour reminds of older furniture made in the 18th and 19th centuries where Van Dyke crystals were used to stain them a lot. I've used them to restore some turned fencing round my brothers old fireplace and its a lovely brown. Nice to see you're starting to buy rough sawn and then mill it yourself too. I know it adds a lot of time to the preparation but the big advantage is you get dead straight and flat edges to deal with and you rarely have that luxury with pre surfaced material because of moisture related movement. You also get to use non standard thicknesses which for some reason I always find slightly more interesting to work with, no idea why, probably just less boring in some way as they're unique. Plus of course rough sawn is cheaper to buy. On smaller jobs, you can harvest it directly from air dried boards off the log as well which saves a ton of cost. Methinks you might need to invest in a planer (you guys call it a jointer). The reason I nought a planar thicknesser was so it could do both operations in one machine while saving workshop space. But its a lovely piece mate and doubtless heirloom quality :-)

Thanks Byoomy me Ol’ mate. You’ll have to show me the methods around those crystals for staining - I love all that old world stuff. And I have a modest 8” benchtop Jointer (planer) on order. So great minds and all that.

I have seen some rough edge oak for sale that still has the bark on, which would be nice to do as a purposeful project for a very unique peice. Another project idea matey. Perhaps it would be a good epoxy sample, stablizing the rough bark with a thick epoxy coating.

@@smoogleville8201 Its a great idea for a project matey especially as I love waney edge anything. When I'm turnikng live edge pieces i use very cheap/thin superglue to stabilise the bark inclusions. Epoxy tends to get used to fill in enormous cracks on the flat surfaces and people often colour them with interesting metallic powders like copper or gilt etc but it could be used on the edges too I'm sure. I've got a lovely piece of Yew board about 11 inch across thats got a whopping split in the middle that needs some epoxy.

@@smoogleville8201 No problem mate. Van Dyke crystals are a doddle, you ust mix with water and use. You'd love them Smudge because the finish they leave will instantly remind you of about a million old oak tables and wardrobes you will have seen in the UK during your childhood. it was very widely used on older furniture. the only trouble is.....you have to be a bit of a Dick to use Van Dyke!!

Another thought occurred to me when you were straightening the sides with the guided spin saw, you could have left the front facing edge waney...I rather like that look although I guess this piece wasn't going in that direction was it.
