We left Grantown on Spey heading north to Melvich via Loch Ness, Fort Augustus, Urquhart Castle and General Wades Road.
We were late leaving with the group so followed on 15 minutes later. We were not rushing but were focused on meeting them at the first stop in Fort Augustus, when the trip took a turn for the worst. Thankfully Sarah was not badly hurt, but her bike was unrideable and required recovery to our preferred dealership in North Oxford.
We have to say, the BMW SOS and Assist Service is priceless, and we would highly recommend this should anyone consider buying a BMW product.
We would like to extend our gratitude to both Ross's Garage & Recovery in Inverness and BMW Motorrad in Inverness for an absolutely outstanding service.
When we realised, we were unable to catch up the group due to the time we had spent organising ourselves and without taking far too many unwanted risks, we diverted to the following night’s location and stayed for 2 nights thanks to Katrina and Chris from BMW Motorrad Tours who made this possible.
The staff at Myrtle Bank Hotel were accommodating and welcoming as well as giving us a relaxed couple of days stay, not to mention the nostalgic catch up with Shaun the owner who was in the same trade as my parents, so we discussed 'the good old days' which was fantastic.
Please consider subscribing, liking, and clicking the bell icon to be notified of future videos or indeed the next instalment of our BMW Motorrad Highlands & Islands Tour where Episode 4 sees us heading to the spectacular Isle of Skye.
Thank you AJ & Sharpie x

No, she wasn't keeping her eye on the road as there was no curb/dip. Simply a case of not concentrating... basically, driving without due care and attention
@richardsutton01
@richardsutton01 6 месяцев назад
@@MrStr8den I agree that the rider wasn't concentrating sufficiently but I'm certain that it was the dip off the edge of the tarmac onto the unpaved verge which unsettled the bike. I've done the identical thing a couple of times over the last 55 years but managed to get the bike back up over the reverse "kerb" and onto the road without damage. My Son has done the same thing once but was no so lucky as, although he kept the bike upright, he bent both front and rear wheel rims, completely deflating the rear tyre. Richard

8:01 classic case of drifting onto shoulder due to target fixation. There were no visible road hazards in the footage. Either that or scenery distraction. We've all done it, one moment we're looking at the scenery all of a sudden the next we're on the shoulder. At this point panicking is typical. We either overcorrect or hit the brakes hard or both. ABS will not save you if you're in a mudhole at speed and you apply them in a panic. But the dismount was very well executed for no substantial injury. It's just a bike, learn from the experience but keep on truckin'

Who said we were ADVENTURE riding, we were on a bike tour which involved over 900 miles of motorway riding!! To address some of your other comments - not at all, shes done over 10,000 miles on this particular bike without a single problem or near miss. We do not ride them as 'adventure' bikes by riding off road, they are purely touring bikes for us, of which they have been rated the second best touring bike (first is the Honda Goldwing - not for us thanks!) , so you don't have to ride off road. We have specific off road bikes, so we are aware of the advantages of lightweight bikes, but also you can bet your arse that if we had used our off road bikes, we would have been criticised for riding a 1,800 mile round road trip on them as stupid and we should have used a GS or RT :) The facts remain that a multitude of factors resulted in the accident happening. We can all criticise the end result and how it shouldnt have happened, bike, rider ability, frame of mind, fatigue etc etc etc, truth is, it was an accident and nobody was hurt or even still killed, which we take as a huge positive. We can always learn more skills, thats some of the joys of motorcycle riding right. All the best and take care
@doofwop

@@G58 but people are generally free to ride what they want, if they can swing it of course. Big 1250 GSAs are actually a favorite of petite ladies, ironically. I have a BMW GSA myself, and I myself am not really tall enough to ride it but I manage, and without an aftermarket lower seat. I'd say she did quite well with it. Probably just looking out at the countryside, I've done the same thing and almost tossed the same way. She came off the bike very well, she had all the best gear on, and I did not see fear in her face afterward. I saw concern for her bike! This is a good sign. We don't want to discourage people from riding by lecturing them condescendingly about their choice of motorcycle. She had been doing fine for a long time before this happened.
@williamcoulter5462
@williamcoulter5462 2 года назад
@@doofwop It is riders choice what they use and she did seem nervous on the wet roads with the wide over-banding on the repairs, I am off up to do the NC500 this weekend from Reading, I have a Rebel 1100 a NC700S but I am using my 2022 Honda Cub 125 now that is going to be a proper adventure wild camping so everything packed on the bike the new one can take total 150KG so I am within weight limit but this means non motorway A and B roads when possible due to the bike not being really quick enough when loaded for motorways, but the new Smart Motorways are nearly always down to 50 or 60 mph so it does not make that much difference nowadays.

Good thing she is ok. I have had this mishaps when I was a much younger rider and no damage as went on the wet grass and lost traction. From that, I learned later to not panic if the bike leaves the road surface and just maintain the direction THE BIKE WANTS to go and ease it back without any abruptness to avoid losing traction. Overcorrection with panic responses can do bad things... or sudden throttle changes up or down loses traction...

I've been riding a motorcycle for 40 years and that's a common mistake made by rookies. 1 Never drive the motorcycle on the side of a road. 2 Always pay attention to the road and its defects. 3 Don't apply the front brake when you're turning and get out of trouble with a little power. I imagine that you will learn from this experience, on a motorcycle you are always learning. I am glad that you occupy all the security implements. Many blessings for the next trips.

I know it's tempting to say that when she said she was nervous that it was premonition but, I've found times when I'm for some reason nervous and that often causes me to make mistakes yet other times, when the mood strikes I can do the most ridiculous things and never have any troubles. Blame what almost certainly was the cause, her nerves causing her to make a mistake and not some silly imagined thing. By the way, amazing stopping from hubby, especially considering how damp everything was. That was what scared me most when she flipped and landed right in front of him but somehow he managed to avoid running over her, that was truly impressive. I had an S 1,000 R Beamer and know how amazing the brakes on it were but that was basically a street legal race bike so you kind of expect it, he did extremely well avoiding her. I guess she knows now he doesn't want to get rid of her 😉.

All part of the learning curve. I came off like that several times in the early years of riding a bike. Nothing like a crash to focus the mind. I always preferred naked bikes so you could just straighten the bars/levers and ride on. I'd say your bike was OK to carry on given the engine casing wasn't breached. As you said, the crash bar did a good job. Don't beat yourself up over it Sarah, it's good experience and it will make you a better rider. I also recommend an off-road riding course if you haven't done it already (but not on a beemer, something light) because it just makes you better all-round. While anyone can fall, riding a motorcycle requires 100% concentration, 100% of the time to reduce that possibility to as close to zero as possible, that's one reason I don't personally like more "modern" invention of the intercom, talking and/or being talked to can cause a distraction and that's all it takes. I'm not saying that's what happened here, just warning people to be careful based on my 46 years of riding. I'm glad everyone was OK and as a GS owner myself I found the bike damage hard to watch.

Yikes; "Target Fixation" at it's finest: fixated on the corner/Hazard- instead of the Solution/SAFETY Plan. It only takes a fractional second sometimes. Totally LUCKED Out- and that beats skill any day. For me, 42 years riding (current)/66yo....one of my "rules" is" Always Think AHEAD of the motorcycle/situation. ANTICIPATION is key. I love corners, the twisties but.....I treat every one of 'em with the same respect as I did a newbie in 1978. Asphalt HURTS.....then and now.

Sorry you had the accident glad everyone was OK, as for your suspension problem my gs had a similar problem mine first lost all damping I took it straight to my dealer who were too busy to look at it luckily it had fixed itself on the 60 miles to get there. The bike was serviced a couple of weeks later but no fault found. Shortly afterwards I had the same message on the dash as you had the bike was booked in and a new rear strut was fitted. No explanation as to the fault, funnily another problem went away at the same time this was that from new the SOS would lose signal ever time we went out but since the strut was fitted no more problems. New bikes like cars have too much electronics and dealers are struggling to keep up.

You don't need to feel you ought to explain. These "accidents" can happen at any time and to absolutely anyone, with whatever experience/expertise someone has or not in motorcycling...But good on you Mr, for remaining calm for your lovely wife who, unfortunately had to endure a worrying and frightening experience and for you to keep calm with having to see and experience your love having an accident.....You did so well keeping calm, keeping control of your machine, stopping safely and getting off to help your wife and remaining calm for her. I so hope your wife does not get put off carrying on riding, things will get fixed up and not to let it get to her, it really can happen to anyone. Try not to worry about it or explain it to yourself, or run through it in your mind all the time. Especially if you are not sure how it came about. However it did, it's just a mistake, that's all, no harm to wifey the single most important thing. Great video, great trip to do. Your partner is brave and I personally think she handled the situation perfectly. For all the arm chair critiques out there, doesn’t matter how good you are, how many miles you have done previously what bike or terrain you ride on, we are human and sometimes we make an error of judgement or in this case position. Sometimes you can get away with a wobble and a missed heart beat, maybe a change of pants, sometimes you don’t. The only important things here are A) you and your partner keep riding and enjoy yourselves . B) review and learn. We all are on a constant journey of learning. Its been scientifically proven that car drivers concentration on the road is reduced when engaged in a conversation using hands free, so it would follow that it is the same for motorcyclists. Some countries have, or are considering banning hands free for this reason. Anyway, I thought the whole point of riding a motorcycle was to get away from mobile phones and try and achieve the state of a 'mind with no mind' in other words, get your head out of the rest of the world except for riding your bike.

Interesting you cut the part where she takes the corner incorrectly and just rides off the road into the grass. I would highly recommend dropping down to a motorcycle you can confidently control through corners without leaving the road, regardless of a 'suspension glitch'. I know it is hard but you need to take a good long look at your own ability and admit that you cannot adequately control and ride the motorcycle when you have a slow-speed 'rider-fault' accident such as this. Not having a go as hey I have been there, most riders have at some point - but I would suggest a 1250cc touring BMW is not the place you want to be at the moment....it's fine when you are pootling along in a straight line without a care in the world, it is if you can adequately control it when things goes a little 'wrong'. I actually thought the crash was going to happen earlier in the vid as you enter a corner with the brakes on - something you also do not do regardless of all the 'electronic aids' you think you have...it is just bad riding technique. Arrive at a corner at the correct speed with the throttle cracked so the weight is balanced 50:50 on both wheels as best you can....not braking and overloading the front of the bike...unless you are trail-braking your race bike and using that extra weight and therefore load/grip on the front wheel (with it's slick race tire) to really lay into the steering to get the quick lean angle to minimize the time steering to assure the best angle into the corner - yea thought not lol. You should have been at a position where you were powering out of that corner at that position, not braking in the grass. Anyway - head up, learn from your mistakes....and get a smaller bike you feel more confident on and can actually counter-steer correctly around a corner. My number one tip would be to ALWAYS attempt to get around the corner, regardless of if you think you can't!! If you have a balanced throttle like I mentioned earlier, and judging by your experience, you could have got around that corner very easily as the bike can handle a lot more lean than you think it can - and if you overcook it and lose the front it means a low-side and sliding off into the grass....which is exactly where you ended up anyway! - but at least you would have TRIED! (You would have easily made it if you had the confidence to try). Just be gentle with the bike, don't panic, focus on what you are doing...and TRY! Check out Keith Codes 'A Twist of the Wrist' books.....solid gold for new riders. 😉
