It was that time again! Time for us to hit the road for yet another adventure. This time we took the road to Colesberg, a town located in the Northern Cape on the main N1 route from Johannesburg to Cape Town. We were amazed to find out how rich in history this place was! From Coleskop to the old buildings, monuments and artefacts in the town. As we drove through the beautiful streets lined with fabulous old houses and trees, we could sense the calm and relaxed vibe. I visited the hotel and museum and walked down some of the streets just to enjoy the atmosphere. Even the station on the outskirts of town still seemed to be in a fair condition. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #colesberg #northerncape #history #coleskop

Good morning DustBugs, we slept over there recently but did not explore the town. Thanks for the tour and the history lesson. I hope more people follow you to ensure that this country is preserved for the next generation. Keep up the good work. I noticed that even in the worst towns there are some places like B&B's and Stalls that shine in an otherwise deteriorating area. To them I say we really appreciate you.

Toverberg/Torenberg, farm Quaggasfontein was declared by Governer Van Plettenberg as the northern border of the Cape de Goede Hoop in 1788. Renamed in 1829 to Governer Sir Lowry Cole. Also the first dominee in 1814 was Voortrekker Erasmus Smit. Last "stop" for the Voortrekkers in 1835/6/7 before moved to the "Over Orange River". During the Boer war they would often build an entire route out of the available rocks in order to get their supplies over various ridges. There's a number of those that can be found in Magaliesberg, which we use to hike in order to get their various lookout points. The history the Magaliesberg has in regards to Boer war is amazing. We were taken on a heritage tour hike in the one section of the range, where the battle of Nooitggedacht took place, and you can see in the rocks where the Boers shot at the English. There's also a kloof in the area where the English dragged up their canon in order to secure the area, which they lost to the Boers in the same battle.

👍 for your new intro, the interesting information that you provide, before you mentioned that the old magistrates court was beautiful, my immediate thought was "now that's a beautiful building", your showcasing of the town which is neat and clean was superb as was the Colesberg hotel with that incredible pool. I love the old furnishings in the lounge and the dining area, the sound of thunder with the grey storm clouds set the scene. Curtis' silence when Sonia noted the warehouse building, at the railway station, being in good condition, except for the weeds she quickly added. 🤣 I have an idea you're off to the city of roses.

Thanks for filming the railway station and the old red houses. I think the old goodshed was busy about 50 or more years ago. I stayed over in Colesberg about 5 years ago and the CBD was filthy. Now i see the other side of the town and i am impressed. Look at the old church with the stone bricks. Almost 200 years to date! I will google the history of the town later. Please travel safely and all of us are looking forward to the next episode.

Nice little town. I have never taken it in the way you have done. I have one fond memory of my army days in the town. Hiking back to Potch, we had a swim in the municipal pool and still made it on time back to base. Yeah, other comments are so correct though. Stop at the one stop, or Ultra City and off you go. One misses out since the N1 doesn't go through the town.
@DustBugsTravel
@DustBugsTravel Год назад
I'm sure the rest of the hike to Potch was much more comfortable, having cooled off in Colesberg. 😁 I think we've all been stopping there for fuel and a break for years already. We personally have always been in a rush to get from Gauteng to the Western Cape or vice versa and never took the time to drive the 1km into town. 🤷🏼‍♂️ We didn't even scratch the surface of all the historical places and buildings of interest during our visit, but what we did manage to see, was fantastic and the actual town proved well worth a visit. If we were there a few hours later, we could've have visited the Horse & Mill too, I think that would be super cool and hopefully we catch them open next time! 😎🚗

We stayed overnight there 5 times in the 1980s when travelling between TVL and the Cape, but I was in primary school at the time and only thought about our destination, where we can go to the beach! The interior of the hotel you showed looks a lot like the Merino Inn we used to stay in, but from the outside of the building I can see that it's not the same place. Hi, as you turned of at the one stop and just before the dirt road started to get to the mountain, you passed the Kentucky outlet, and truck parking, theres a farm stall there "Chargo", very modern, but well worth a visit, they have butcher there, and their boerewors is fantastic, the lady butcher, has her own recipes, and grinds and mixes all the spices herself, and they also make roosterkoeks on site, and in my opinion, one of the best roosterkoeks i have ever eaten, I've had the curry, pulled lamb, and venison (was buffalo the day i bought), you might have stopped there, but if you didn't, next time you pass that way, do yourself a favor and stop Also, if you pass that way again, and you got time, and its open, the Horse and Mill is really worth a visit, we landed up there by chance, we were on a road trip from KZN to Cape Town, and we usually don't book, we just turn of and look for something that catches our fancy, we hadn't found anything, and arrived in Colesberg at about 18h00, stopped at the little OK supermarket, and i approached a local lady in the car park, and said i was looking for a place to stay over night, must be clean, reasonable price, with good food and ice cold beer, she recommended the Horse and Mill, and she was spot on, the rooms are in the little Huisies up the road. (walking distance) The Pub / Restaurant was fascinating the huge wooden spoke wheel, the stone floors with the grove from the horses hooves over the years, and old stone feed and water troughs Thanks for the road trips, some bring back memories, some arenew for me, and on my list for the future

We'll get to Laingsburg one of these fine days, but you can check out Episodes 10, 11 and 12 for the Prince Albert area and Episode 188 for Cradock in the meantime. We hope you enjoy these too! Grahamstown is for a future trip to the Eastern Cape. 😁🚗

Does Colesberg have any connection with the 'home town' town of the Cole family? The town of Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh, Northern Ireland is dominated by the Cole obelisk and the family where the main benefactors of the town. There is also the Colebrooke river and many also 'served' in the wars in South Africa. Would Coleberg think of twinning with Enniskillen Co Fermanagh? During the Great War both sides fought together. I saw only one Dutch style gable wall. Why are there so few Dutch style gable walls in these towns. Could you go deeper into the history of Colesberg and its associations with the United Kingdom? Many thanks for your videos.

Colesberg is indeed a fascinating place and we're so glad we just didn't drive past this time. A quick Google search while on the road revealed that the town was named after Sir Galbraith Lowry Cole, then Governor of the Cape Colony. Wikipedia goes on to say that the town 'saw a large number of battles and skirmishes during the second Anglo-Boer War'. Colesberg happened to be the first stop on this trip to the Free State, but we don't have any close associations in town, so won't be able to respond on your 'twinning with Enniskillen Co Fermanagh' question. For us, history is an interesting and intriguing part of our travels and of every town and place we get to visit, but we don't do in-depth research on any specific place. We hope our videos inspire our viewers to do just that on the places which interest them. 😊 I suggest you make contact with the Colesberg-Kemper Museum in town. They may either be able to assist you or point you in the right direction! I hope you find the info you're looking for. 🇿🇦🚗

The section of the N2 at 0:44 has become embedded on the tourist map of Cape Town due to the spectacle literally hundreds of occupants of the squatter camp on the southern side that sit on their haunches right next to the N2 to do their "private business" - you should have included that as a prime tourism attraction since it is a never-again-unseen sight for passing tourists.

If you watched our video in full, you would've clearly noriced that we focused on the town of Colesberg and not the N2. 🛣 My wife filmed a little bit of our drive back home from the airport and spoke about summer being back. You seem very familiar with the road, you should make a video of your own and upload it.

@@DustBugsTravel I did watch it in full as for most of your other videos. I simply had to pull your leg since you omitted perhaps not the most attractive but the most commented on talking point on that section of the N2.

All these old people just liked building their houses on the street, I guess it served 2 purposes. 1. Bigger back yard for their gardens and the horse they had to pull the buggy and 2. So that the Skinner Bek Tannies just have to step out onto their stoep to talk about the men or the other Tannie down the street who is letting way too many men into her house especially late at night.

Whatever the reason, we love it that the houses are built so close to the streets, I think it must make for a very sociable community. 👌😊

We have our own, but it's not suitable for the type of roads we travel on. I'm not keen to purchase a vehicle at this point and find that the rental vehicle works very well for our specific set of circumstances at this point. 🚙
