This S10 had a 400 small block in it that went bad so I cleaned up a 305 to replace it. The 400 had long tube headers which I never liked for various reasons so I switch to a set of OEM truck manifolds. This video outlines the changes necessary when using the parts selected.

@WildWestGarage
@WildWestGarage Год назад
@@richardross119 I did work the firewall back a bit to create more clearance for the distributor. The truck already had a V8 in it when it came to me, there was some work done to the heater housing but I’m not sure if it was really necessary. My son folded the pinch weld were the fire wall joins the transmission hump on his. I’ve never heard of anyone cutting.

Nice clean install. People always shun the 305, but they were reliable small blocks that can really be woken up with some heads/ headwork and a cam. By no means a super horsepower maker, but very good in a small light body.

Thank you, I’ve had a couple of negative comments regarding installing a 305. The video is not necessarily about installing a 305, the information applies to most any displacement small block. And I agree the 305 can make decent power for cheap and it’s perfectly adequate for an S10 with next to no traction

305's came in so many GM cars in the mid to late 70's and early 80's most of us just kept messing with them until they broke or died of high mileage. Most of them had Rochester Quadrajets on them so you could do a simple intake swap, keep your old carb and HEI and shave 20 or 30 pounds.
@johnw5242
@johnw5242 Год назад
The reason for hate on the 305's isvbecause they had the cams for a lot of them manufactured in Mexico, and the billits supplied wete as soft as butter. A lot of people got burned on that, and are mad to this day at Mexico and/or "The 305 Engine as a whole." True story. GM messed up, and that's how I personally see it.

Hey Charles, I actually haven’t done a V8 swap from scratch. All of the trucks I’ve worked on already had swaps done. I’m just the guy that fixes all the problems after the fact. The 4.3 stuff makes perfect sense. Thanks for your insight. I made a little more progress on your pipe yesterday.

Mines a 4x4 ext cab. Fortunately the previous owner did a body lift so I had alot more options. Also, installing the engine without the waterpump makes things alot easier. It's only 4 bolts and very easy to install after. A radiator out of a Jimmy, or bravado with a 4.3 and ac can handle the heat from a small block Fairley well.

My son did a 4x4 conversion with a 5 speed from a newer half ton. We built the oil pan by cutting the sump off a 4.3 pan and welding it to the V8 pan. Thanks for watching.

Very nice! I remember having a 305 in a in an early 70's Jeep CJ5 when I was younger. I've been wanting to do an S10 engine swap for some time. My friend had a new S10 back in 91. It was 2wd with the 4.3 and manual transmission. That little joker would boogie! Unfortunately, he hit a hog, overcorrected and ran off the road! Luckily he was wearing a seatbelt. He was alright, but the S10 was totaled. Anyways, my Uncle has several various engines in his shop. One of which is a 327. Can't remember what it came out of, but I don't think it would take much to get running again. If I find a deal on a decent S10, I might think about doing something similar. Thank you for the informative video! It definitely has me thinking about getting the project started. Take Care👍
@WildWestGarage
@WildWestGarage Год назад
The 327 would add some punch, the 305 in this truck was just disassemble cleaned up and put back with new gaskets. There are probably better ways to do the belt setup, I was just working with what I had. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask. Thanks for watching.

Looks good. I’m planning to buy an S10 and swap a V8 into it. I was thinking about an LS but I really prefer the looks of the older small blocks and everyone is putting LS engines into everything. Do you think it would be easier, harder or about the same to do it with the older, pre malaise era small block? I noticed that you didn’t have to tear the whole front of the truck off to do yours.
@WildWestGarage
@WildWestGarage Год назад
I’m not a big fan of the LS look and I don’t have any experience with them but I think there probably a better engine. The LS swap comes with a lot of wiring and intake plumbing so for that reason I would say the old school SB would be an easier swap.
@vladtheimpala5532
@vladtheimpala5532 Год назад
@@WildWestGarage Thanks for the reply. I’m inclined to agree. Especially on an older one. The LS swap is pretty involved. There are wiring kits for some S10s that plug into a computer and allow you to keep your accessories. They’re expensive though.
@WildWestGarage
@WildWestGarage Год назад
@@vladtheimpala5532 that’s the other thing about a LS swap it can get expensive. The truck in this video had a small block in it when it came to my shop so it made things pretty easy for me, but the replacement engine I put in only cost me a gasket set,a timing chain, and 20 bucks in exhaust tubing. The 305 was given to me and it just needed cleaning up basically. There were some other parts needed but it was mostly stuff I had laying around or could be found cheaply.

This truck already had a V8 in it when it came to me but yes the fire wall was altered and also the heater housing. I did a little more work behind the distributor. You might have to hammer back the flange where the firewall meets the transmission hump. If you’re doing a swap be prepared to put the engine in and out of the truck to get things right.

Question what did you do with the drive train?
@WildWestGarage
@WildWestGarage Год назад
I didn’t do any drivetrain work on this truck, it already had a V8 swap when it came to me I just replaced the dead 400 with the 305. This truck has a Turbo 350 and a beefed up 10 bolt rear axle. A 10 bolt with the right modifications can handle a fare amount of power, especially in such a light vehicle which does put a lot of strain on it. Most 4 cylinder trucks will have very low gears so I would recommend going up. I worked on another truck with a stock 305 that could only rev to 5000 rpm, limited by the cam. I swapped out the 4:11 gears with 2:73s and it turned it into a rocket ship. The low gears really held the truck back , it was at max rpm at around 55 mph.?
