This episode was shot on June 2 in the afternoon at Exhibit 2. Due to the absence of Momoko and the baby, Haoko becomes more and more agitated as time passes by. He relentlessly chases Toto, and when he bites or hits her, the entire family is united to fight him back. Especially 4-year-old Riki bravely keeps guarding Toto. Fortunately no one was injured. If any of us watches his behaviors in this short footage for the first time, s/he may easily misunderstand him as a violent gorilla. But his behaviors seem to be based on the natural instinct as the alpha male of his troop.

Well Haoko, you helped make your brave son Riki. What can you expect. He will only copy what you taught and showed him. Riki is quite brave for 4 years old. He doesnt back down from his huge silverback dad. I give that 4 yo gorilla a lot of high fives for protecting the elder female of this troop. Poor Haoko too. He misses Komoko so much. Its been over 3 months now since he's seen her.

Riki is getting huge!! He will be 5 next month, but he is much larger than his nephew Kintaro, who will be 4 in Dec. Hopefully Momoko will be back with the family soon and all will be well.

I don't consider Haoko's behavior like agression. Today he is stressed and worried again. He is more than the previous days and needs to let it out. With Momoko's very prolonged absence he surely began to think that she will never be back. Now he wants to protect Toto who must do whatever he wants her to do otherwise he becomes angry. Too much worry can lead to anger.

Poor Haoko. He seems tense. Confused maybe. For all we know he is missing Momoko and the baby intensely. His family has been disrupted, his favorite female and co-ruler have been separated from him, and he seems hyperprotective of Toto. I see him following her constantly and closely, but it doesn't look amorous or aggressive. He seems hypervigilant and maybe looking for comfort not mating or anger. I mean after he nipped at Toto he ran from her, not face her to attack. The scene almost looked like the Shabani family where he seems to go after Nene or Ai and then chaos ensues with everyone chasing the big guy. Toto is his other favorite female, a vital link in the family, and he can't lose her too. Her absence would surely destroy the family unit and he would lose standing as the king. Rikki's intervention seems to be that of a kid who knows something is wrong but doesn't understand what or why and feels the need to protect his Toto and/or sisters. Idk maybe I'm reading too much into this snapshot of a very complex situation. I can only comment on what I see.

Haoko's behavior is perfectly natural for a silverback in this situation. He thought that Momoko was gone and wanted to keep Toto from leaving him too by showing dominance over her. Unfortunately, it was a tense time for the troop. Brave Riki! 💜

You videos are the best. Thank you. I love that you can hear their vocalizations. Do you go to other Zoos as well? Haoko seems to be a very sensitive Gorilla. I remember how he used to so this type of chasing with Momoko. I am glad things are getting bettet for them. Its been a very tense few months. The Haoko Girls are just beautiful and so sweet. Poor sweet Haoko has already lost one female (in his mind) and he doesn’t want anything to happen to sweet Toto…..he is desperately trying to understand what happened to Momoko and his baby and he doesn’t want anything to happen to Toto so he is in ultra protection mode……that’s what silverbacks do….. they guard and protect their families…….and when Toto tries to get away from him or the kids try to get between he and Toto, he just automatically reacts with silverback protection/aggression….. sweet guy has had sooo much stress what with that mess over the skulls a while back and now it’s Momoko being obviously seriously ill, not caring for the baby properly then disappearing….non of that makes any sense to him…… the others are worried also…watch from 5:00 and you will see poor Kamomo get upset and slap her head due to the stress….but watch him try to make up with Toto at 8:22 💜💔….. the zoo needs to worry about the stress hurting Haoko’s heart…..that’s always a big worry for all silverbacks… ☹️

Poor Haoko! No wonder he lost weight! Riki was something else tho! He was acting like a 14 year old instead of a 4 year old! He was going to defend his Miss Toto! I hope Momoko’s return to the family will be a peaceful day. Especially if she has the baby. Whatever the outcome it’s going to be something to watch for sure! Thanks for the great narration Karin! I used to watch the older videos of Haoko and thought he was mean. And being that he was so big I was afraid he would hurt someone so I didn’t watch that much. I can go back to the older videos with a better understanding🙂

A lot of people would accuse him of things he didn't do, he was hyperactive and did a lot of running around but I never saw him hurt anyone. And he was always playing with his kids.

Meu coração está apertado com a situação dessa família linda. Eles estão vivenciando uma espécie de luto pela ausência da matriarca. Quem viu os vídeos da família do Momotaro ( no outro zoológico) quando ficou doente? Os filhos não se alimentavam e ficavam letargicos o dia todo. O grupo só voltou a se alimentar direito e a interagir normalmente quando o costas prateadas voltou. Muito triste.

Does anyone have the time stamp? This filming is super shaky and makes me dizzy watching for too long. I love seeing this family but it's really hard to find good footage of them so I rarely watch them. Or if anyone knows of a channel that films them without all the movement.

Ok, I've said this a few times in other posts. Haoko's personality is...what it is. He means no harm, but he is persistently pushy sometimes, which gets him in trouble with the entire troop. I understand perfectly that he is a silverback, but his gestures do sometimes come off as annoying. However, as huge 🦍 as he is, Haoko desires a female counterpart closely by his side literally and physically. He's usually all over and on top of Momoko who is used to it, and she just moves away when she's had enough. Here Haoko appeals to Toto to be close, but she doesn't want to be close, just in the vicinity 😃. Haoko's #1 love muffin Momoko is in the off exhibit getting better, and he knows something is off so he's been very anxious. I agree that he absolutely wants Toto to be submissive and do as he commands. 0:34 Toto: Oh here we go. I just want to go in. 0:48 Haoko: You can go in when I say, gently speaking. Wait...wait. 1:06 Ok now 1:18 but not you Momoka and Komomo. Wait...wait. 1:38 Ok now. Me: What the heck Haoko? 😆 You're something else this day, but I still 😍 love you. 2:06 Toto: Hopefully we can eat in ✌️ peace. 2:10 Haoko: Where is Toto?! 2:30 Riki: 😱 OMG dad is at it again. 2:52 Toto: Haoko please stop following me! 3:03 Haoko: Toto isn't obeying! Riki: Dad enough...stop that! 3:40 Haoko: Come back Toto! 4:31 Toto: Will this ever end? 4:45 Haoko scolds Toto and she's 😠 alarm screaming and barking in protest. I feel like Komomo needs a man. I wonder if they've thought about Shabani's son Kyomasa for her? She can't go with Gentaro because it's her half/brother's son (so her nephew). I see some zoos in California have great silverbacks like Hasani Jr. I wonder why they are waiting to find her a mate. She's often seen grabbing her ear, I heard it was a sign of anxiety because she should have left the troop by now. We could always need new troops and babies.

Shabani and Haoko are brothers. So, Komomo has no gorillas to mate in Japan. I hope the zoo will manage to find her mate from overseas in the near future. Thank you Nicole for watching.😊

lol yeah, probably not a good idea to mate with your cousin. lmao You know I sometimes watch a zoon in California, they have a nice, strong and beautiful silverback named Hasani Jr., I think he would be great. I worry about Komomo always grabbing her ear.

Momoko was ill and she didn't breastfeed the baby. Momoko has to be medicated so she was separated from the troop. Thank you for watching.

I don't know why she can't get pregnant but a regular visitor told me the zoo did exam on her and found she was infertile. This is not what I've read from the official sources.

Toto is to old for that silverback to want to mate .and definitely to old to get pregnant and have baby..

Roxanna Mccarthy-Haoko and Toto still mate.she is the no 2 female in this family.hes actually in protective mode b/c he feels like he lost his no1 female.His stress and fear is coming out sideways.this was on June2nd.things are much better now that he can see Momoko and the baby thru th gates.Hard to watch, yes, but the reaction of everyone for missing Momoko& the baby.everyday is out of order.😢💜🦍💜

@@lynngold1865 I agree Lynn. I read these comments and I must say we as humans spend too much time trying to put our discomfort on age and looks into the great ape world. The gorilla way seems to function on what you bring to the plate, how do you mesh with the family as a unit, and how good are you in gorilla politics. Toto may be old by human standards, but she seems to be a great carer for his children, comfort for Haoko (sexually and friend), and she fully understands gorilla hierarchy and politics. She is a key to this family as much as Momoko.
