I had to smile when you turned back 😊. My boat NORSELA was a Colvic Watson Mortorsailer with a Ketch Rig. Her hull was 34 ft but 11 mts OA the bowsprit. In a force 5-6 I would have had all the sails up and going well however on one occasion I just and only just, made it into Den Helder before a Force 9 hit! That was frightening. Cheers Michael
Yep, when I lived on my Ketch Cutter (see ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wWgQCH9jwBQ.html) Wind was no problem what so ever. Also the deliveries I did with the racing yacht, We even had special sails for delivery and others for the race, I often went full. But as a liveaboard I do not miss the mono hull sailing boats anymore.
I am new to the channel and have watched several of your videos. I am so impressed by your ability to maintain focus on the helm while she was underway in the swells. You barely broke your posture and hardly turned your attention away towards the chair and other items sliding items in the cockpit. Also, many people would try to push onwards but a smart captain knows when to throw in the towel. Keep up the great work on these videos. I appreciate the quality content you provide.
Thank you Jimmy, It also shows that I perhaps should have sticked to my wish list: that said: check box 33: stabilizers. :-) To have them build under Lady Liselot cost me at least € 65,000,- so for that moaney I can return to base many many times.
Just found your channel about an hour ago, and watching all your uploads so far, really like your style, hope you’ll keep on producing new content as it is very enjoyable (also amazing to see that part of the world, it is beautiful, although that weather to me was quite scary)
These are really great fun. You clearly enjoy what you are doing, don't mind admitting your mistakes (which teaches everyone else), and you treat everything with good humour. I also enjoyed watching the video where you leave the port solo. Thanks mate!
Hello Hugh, thanks for you warm words. I collect hours of footage of me chatting into this silver Minion (GoPro camera) and then cut that back to 15-20 minutes. Even during editting I am laughing about my own remarks.
What nice that you informed us about the handlings you do. There are not many of these kind video. It’s always the route the shown us or the environment but, you show and give advise how to sail and how to act with your ship on the waters.
Thank you for the compliment, Willem. I think I have figured out the 'format' I share in my video's.: Sail along with Henk-Jan whilst enjoying the practice of boating. I am not much into 'showing the environment', so I try to be as authentic as much as possible. The downside is that every video shows the actions one must take before or whilst boating, but as you see on the number of subscribers (I started december '21) many like it.
I think your honesty and abilities make for great content. I also love the way you are not too proud to change your mind and do the sensible thing. Great videos, keep up the good work. Thank you for sharing 👍 😀
Thank you Anthony. It;s 'funny' to read some comments. As it I am stupid (mostly from the Dutchies). Perhaps I am, but I decided to press record, to edit, to render, AND to publish and just for the enormous fun I have in producing and sharing. It's just one of the millions of video's on RU-vid. hahaha
Just found your channel and subscribed. Really enjoying your videos. I can see from the comments you have learned to 'always' stow everything away securely, even if that means reorganizing and manufacturing new stowage's. I'd seen in your other videos and had been concerned your helmsman's seat wasn't secured down. This is a must, not only to prevent it from harming you or damaging the boat, but also to give you somewhere safe to sit whilst the boat rolls. I hope you have remedied this. As said, great video and kudos for uploading it 🙂
Thank you for subscribing! It helps a lot. Funny enough, when sailing with a sailboat on heavy waters you know what to do and what to store, but this viade shows my first time in rough weather on a motorboat, and it seems as if I had overlooked many things. Any how. Hope you like the rest of the video's, too.
Really enjoyed this video. Your honesty is so refreshing. The decision to return to port was correct. After 30 years of sailing we always assume everything onboard can potentially fly across the cabin so stowing it all is so important, which you learned the hard way. I hope you didn't break anything really important. Keep up the great content. ⚓️🛳😎🌴
Nice to see a boat well kept and organised. The weather didn't look to bad and no white horses on the top of the waves. But if your uncomfortable always best to play it safe 👏
Exactly what I thought: No whites on top of the waves, what can go wrong, but due to the sandbanks (trip of at least 4 hours) the sea became choppy. Later (of course) the locals warned be. Well, at least it gave some footage to watch.
Our 34' Mainship is particulary sensitive to boat wakes and get get severely rocked by them, especially when a big sport fishermen gets impatient in a channel and speeds by us, passing close by just as it's making it's maximum wake while climbing up on a plane (and burning as much fuel in the process as we do for our entire trip). So even on a calm day, we secure all loose items on the boat before departing. You never know what waves you might encounter.
I can image. In the 18 month prior to this boat trip I only sailed Lady Liselot through canals and waterways. Even in situation as you describe with 'neighbours' causing some waves, there was not much damage done, but after this trip the 'what to store when heading for sea' has grown. BTW Good to have you 'on board'.!
Very interesting video indeed, for which I congratulate the captain. Captain really knows how to handle the boat singlehanded. One may wonder whether it was wise to leave Terschelling going out to sea with prevailing NW/5-6 Bf, knowing the choppy waters in that area. The Dutch-English of the captain is very funny to hear.
I agree Alex, but my former boat was a longkeeler saling ketch cutter and she enjoyed NW6. But that was 20 years ago and I have 'forgotten' some things. In respect of the English: I do my best. ;-) Sometimes I stop recording have a look on Google translate and start recording agasin. Most of the time it is spontanious (as you have noticed)
Another great video... just goes to show how quick the weather and sea conditions can change hence good call to turn back. At the point of turning back I thought we might got a little tune "staying alive " haha Bee Gees ...
Achteraf.
I had a converted 37 footer heading into Botany Bay Sydney Australia the waves and swell were 6 metres It was a fun ride coast guard come out and escorted us in , they had a 65 foot patrol boat and went to winward it slow the swell ,,, I wish i had a camera on Board as it made my 37 footer look like a row boat ,,,,, Great vid Rob NSW Australia VK2LOZ
Henk-Jan, when we started out boating, we had a similar experience with our 12m30 Bruijs Kotter, Class-B ship. To make sea trips more enjoyable we added a Magnus Master anti-roll system. Best decision yet!
From a ketch sailing cutter to a trawler, and becoming seasick in 15 minutes, I had stabilizers on my wish list. BUT Lady Liselot came without. I know the Magnus system Edwin, and others too, but is the boat worth an additional € 80,000.- investment? Let me think about that... Or can you get me a discount??? ;-)
Hey Henk, absoloutly love your videos. You are living my dream ! Please keep us posted with you honest, funny very charming way of presenting. I would have one wish: Do you see a possibilty to put the S1 and S2 Videos (and following) into a playlist. This way I could binge watch them :) Sending you warm and kindest regards and greetings from Switzerland
Your Wish is my command (in this matter, that is...) Playlists Binch-Watch Season 1, 2 and 3 are ready. HAVE FUN!!! Grüss Gott (or is that something they say in Beiern ans Austria)?
Hi, stabilizers are hydraulic or electric fins besides the boat that swivel so that the boat does not heels anymore. There are several systems aftermarket available, and proces start at $ 80,000 for a boats like Lady Liselot.
I am so sorry to see the contents of your saloon scattered around the floor. I have experienced this several times and the noise it makes is quite distressing. Good decision to turn back and tidy up and prevent further damage. You need a young lady to start making things secure as the disruption starts - apart from the fact that it must be quite lonely cruising on your own. Lady Liselot appears to be a very well appointed vessel Skipper and I was particularly interested to see your extensive use of CCTV around the vessel.
Hi John. The Netherlands is a country bases on regulations (it seems) and one is to have a 360 view. Via this system I have that as you saw, and since I help(ed) business to grow by doing things the easiest way, I have implemented that idea also on board of Lady Liselot. And for your reassurance: sometimes a lady also steps on board. Neverthe less the to do list "What to store when heading for sea" growed in 1 day. ;-)
@@MVLadyLiselot haha that's very true. Hey. As someone who's been here since the very beginning :) can you do a nice boat tour... Mechanical systems, engine room, staterooms and heads? My family is planning to buy a boat and that part is always helpful!!
@@chasles22 I will do so. Let's see how it fits my schedule. Recording is 1, but the editting of a trip takes at least 12 hours. Mostly becuase of the many footage I collect. But perhaps a walkthrough is easier done.
Wild ritje.
@@MVLadyLiselot I think one of your outside cameras should be called VomCam. I think it will go down very well or in this case up.😂 😝⚓️ All the best, Paul.
Yes Oli, I did. As I sailed the North sea many time before with my sailing cutter, I thought this time that I had stowed everything away. Well, the footage proof me wrong. As liveaboard you become blind for stuff that can fall. "It was there all the time", well not anymore after this trip. A trip lik this helpes in 'getting rid of stuff'.
Nothing made me as happy as your videos ... you are a person with a great sense of humor, pleasant, good looking person, very good at steering the boat, so I wonder why you are not married ... if I were a woman I would have asked you in marriage (thankfully I'm not) ... ha, ha, ha. Please continue to travel and make us happy too
hahaha Well... been there, done that. Had some morgages, kids and even a family car! Yeah!! You comment makes me happy. This channel started a couple of weeks ago and MAN have a look on all the loving comments, like yours. I can image this attention can become addicitve.
Thank you for the vid! Ìm travelling very often in this area and sorry- for my understanding it was a calm sea in your film😉 But nevertheless- I can’t understand, that all your stuff is flying around, it should be secured at every tour. Perhaps we meet us together some days on sea, I stored your ship on AIS. Stay cool and have safe trips!
NW6 between the Wadden Islands turns out to be a bad sea state. There were no crests on the water, but the space between the sandbanks and the islands makes the sea very choppy. Once back in port, the locals said "yes, we could have told you that." Although I had gone through and checked my checklist 'what to store before I go to sea', the sea still managed to find the loose things. I could have also removed the video material, but it seemed like an instructive journey.
I had this on .my trip crash clank hang on tight everything all over the place.Such a drag.Thought it was just me.Rolling like a pig.Dam mess. Not fun.like these feeds stay well Captain.
THANX! I did store and stow some stuff, but the sea showed me to add some more items on the list. As a liveaboard, one holds more stuff than when it's just am 'for the weekend' boat.
My second time viewing this video. I think 2nd time is more fun to watch, especially at midnight . You’re a smart boater, always ready to adjust your plans and schedule, and find tomorrow a better day to enjoy the water. 👍
Imagine, carry on for at least 4 to 5 hours. That time it would take to pass the island and the sandbanks. My head was not affected enough by the seasickness to make that calculation fast. ;-)
Good move. Your boat would have been full of broken things. Excellent move. Glad it worked out. Some people suffer from mission blindness. And they carry on regardless. “We must get there” So it was nice to see you turn back.
@@GediSpock Well I had to time to myself, but sometimes there was a strickt time schedule like 'back to school, work or home'. Nevertheless I think I would have turned also.
Next time good seafastening.
Great Video, and I am relieved to see that you didn't fall or hurt yourself...... and now you can enjoy a dinner of "sailor's self scrambling eggs" :) With regard to the "manoeuvring to Port" message misunderstanding, I can only imagine how difficult it must be changing from speaking English to the camera then speaking Dutch over the radio and then back to English for the video. Thanks again for another great insight into sailing around the ports and channels of the Netherlands.
Hi Peter, I must confess, that the more I am working on these video's the more I started talking in english to myself. ;-) But the seasickness did not help. Where I normally have tons of footage of me chatting and I must decided what to show and what not, the footage of mee talking was rare. ;-) Nevertheless there was 20+ minutes to fill.
Hey. Would you mind telling me what that item is in or attached to your forward window? At first I thought it might be some kind of vent then I saw the cable. Really curious about the answer! Take care.
Hello to you (again!!) It is a so-called pendulum window. The inner part rotates and when it rains or you get a lot of bow water over, the centrifugal force knocks the water droplets away.
Why did you drive so close to the shore? I always try to have at lest 20-30m so that the waves are more flat. 6bft should be no issue for your boat.....
I had to get between the islands, and there was only an bouyed canal due to the sandbank. See the video before this one, foor more info in the wetlands overthere.
@@MVLadyLiselot ...I know....but than you wanted to go at the seaside of the island south. 6bft for your trawler should not be an issue. Normaly I go out from Niewpoort or Neeltje Janse. You have alsways these channels - but on the open sea with a little bit more depth its getting much better....
No Dean, no stabilizers. All the trawlers who have (seen on YT of course) only pitch (go up and down), and do not roll. Stabilizers was of the items on my wish list Lady Liselot did not check. Unfortunately.
Stabillisizers are nice, but too expensive for me personally. I thought about, but for my boat It would be 80.000€( gyros) In your case I would check if it’s possible to stability about speed an wind/tide optimising.
Securing for sea is more demanding and exacting than securing for the sheltered waters and canals? This should give you the opportunity to inspect all movable gear, with a focus on those items that are in machinery spaces where if they break loose can do damage to hydraulic lines or delectate electronics/sensors/data relays etc. I once lost my steering system due to a large paint drum striking the main hydraulic line to my steering motor (this was in a tropical storm in the Bismarck Sea). I almost lost the vessel having to steer on main engines and causing me to increase the speed over the ground. I sacked (dismissed) my Executive Officer the next week!
Yes Joseph, you are right. When I step on board the boats that only drive the inland canals, the salon looks like a normal house with all kind of loose stuff everywhere. on Lady Liselot it is already a lot more tidy, largely because as a 'man alone' I don't like all those knick knacks and messes. Most sailors are used to setting up their ship so that everything stays intact. For me this was the first time I encountered rougher water and so I learned that I had to add something to my "waht to stow and store when heading for sea" list. Apart from that... the video is just like in the movies: the editor ultimately determines what you see. It wasn't too bad, because the engine room had been cleaned up, in the sleeping quarters everything was on the bed and rolled up in blankets, in the kitchen the overhang was secured, but only in the wheelhouse there was still too much loose, as you could see. Can imagine that in a precarious (and professional) setting like you describe, you have to be very alert to what can be lying around.
It sounds like some one is wrestling a pig behind you, if you feel pukey turn off the auto pilot and hand steer, when you have to concentrate it takes your mind off throwing up, it worked for me
I have tried all the regular tips & trics against seasickness. Nothing helped. Even during 15 years match racing in ORC2 (believe me you are concentrating when you wanna win) it failed. I often paid for cleaning the sailing suits of my buddies. But now I have found the right pill. will tell more in the episode that comes online soon (S3/E19)
Can't believe you would go to sea with a helm seat that's not bolted to the floor, and not securing all the loose gear you have in the boat...securing a vessel for sea is just basic.
Yes Mike, I agree, but my former boat was a 36ft longkeel saling ketch cutter and she enjoyed NW6. But that was 20 years ago and I although I had a todo-list "what to store when heading for sea" I have 'forgotten' some things as you noted. What's the saying: "We learn the fastest from our stupidities?" Guess you'll recognize some of that.
hahaha, Well Theresa, I thought I had, but Lady Liselot proved me wrong, didn't she? LOL. The "what to store and put away the moment you head for sea" has grown as per that day. In one of the next coming video's you will hear any noises.
the next video MAY be entitled 'securing the boat for sea' which would cover all eventualities, you always need a sense of humour, otherwise you would never go to sea
Nope. That's what Dutchies think since Rod Stewart sang "I am sailing", but when you watch English boating channels, you will find native English who speak about driving the boat.
