Awesome job Daryl. I’m looking forward to the mountain scenery and enjoyed the description of the two mainlines and how they were effected by the terrain and technology. No more vacations for you until you’re done, okay?
For the micro engineering flex track I use my Micro Mark flex track laying tool. It’s part of their track laying tool set. You basically slide it over the rails of the track and it bends the curve. It’s very easy to smooth things out! Loving the updates!
Before you ballast, I'd recommend superelevating your curves. It'll help create more realism and as a bonus, help prevent any derailments that can occur on the curves. This layout is amazing and I can't wait to see the scenery begin to take shape.
Nice job Daryl making good progress I wish that I had the room unfortunately homes here in Texas do not have basements but I still enjoy running N scale Amtraks Gordon Bliss will help me construct a new layout later on this year HAPPY RAILROADING GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY DARYL AND STAY SAFE ;-)
Daryl, looking awesome, I always get more tips and tricks about layout building. Could you provide a link to the roadbed you use? I know you mentioned it in an earlier video. Thanks and stay safe. Ken
I've taken advantage of the fact that one side or the other of the rails becomes longer around curves to stagger joints, rather than trimming the longer rail. It's more work to place the rail joiners but I think it's the better method. On a large layout like yours, the effect would tend to even out anyway.
It's from Hobby Innovations. Google it to get the website. Unfortunately, they have stopped producing the Roadbed due to lack of materials. They don't know when they will be able to start up again.
Your almost to the top Daryl Curvo is in now it is time for Mark to work his magic. Next up finish the climb to the state line at Wasatch and build the Evanston Yard.
I just found this video and would LOVE to find out more about the area as it relates to the year 1918. My 2nd great uncle was a UP engineer and was killed with the crew when the boiler exploded as the train went up Castle Rock hill near Curvo. Do you know anything about that incident? Is there a photo of the area or a video? I recently found the investigation report online and learned why it happened.
Fantastic layout!!!! I'm new to your channel so have been binge watching from right before you dismantled the Geneva sub. Question: Why aren't you soldering your rail joints as you add track? Railjoiners are notorious for slipping off without solder. With a layout this large (It's bigger than the club layout I used to belong to) it's cheap insurance against expansion/ contraction. It would be hell chasing down a dead zone after ballast/ scenery go in. Just curious.
I solder feeder wires to rails so that every rail has no more than one rail joiner between it and the soldered rail. Also, soldering rail joiners does not allow for expansion and contraction.
That is a very unique looking trestle at Curvo Daryl, is there any kits to kitbash or will you have to scratch build?? Either way those are the challenges that make me love Model Railroading!!!!
I feel that Athearn makes the best yellow for UP. Scaletrains is too faded and intermountain is too yellow while Athearn has very nice warm gold yellow.
I don't like having pins in the in the centre of ties, instead I remove a plastic spike against the rail, drill a hole up against the rail and put a spike or small pin in it. It is hard to see it once the track is painted and ballasted, more so if you spike on the inside of the rails.
Basically you layout the plywood on the floor and draw out the curves using a long piece of wood as a compass. One end is screwed to the center of the arc and the other is drilled with a hole just big enough for a pencil to fit through. Then you use a jog saw to cut it out.
@@EvanstonSub I’d definitely enjoy seeing a tutorial on it. Without having a complete drawn up plan such as you have, it’s difficult plotting out pieces. I’d like to build with this technique, but I have no faith in myself with it
@@EvanstonSub I drove on railroad property to get there once I was there I stayed on the rancher property taking my pictures I need to get back in there for some updated photos this summer
