What a elegantly simple solution to the age old problem of junk rigs. Thank Harold for being there to help Alan with this bit of a pesky problem

Hello Alan, just a quick tip on the difference between a "pocket" and a sleeve: a sleeve will allow your batten to enter at one end and exit at the other. A pocket with allow your batten to enter at one end, then stop at the other (just like your change pocket in your blue jeans. Haha!) I really admire what you have done with the boat which you have created with your own hands: admirable! jm2marinecanvas

Maybe a carbon fibre mast might have been worth the extra expense? I think you have been aware of the chafing problem from early on but it takes time to assess how long it takes before it needs fixing. Sail well. Sail safe. If it is Christmas at sea may the weather treat you well. Cheers.

How much do you think a carbon fiber mast would cost? I thought that would be a good idea.

The chaff is taken care of with this simple solution. I always wanted to keep this design simple and affordable, hence the wood mast.

The sail chaffing issue could have been extremely concerning had you been out at sea. All I can say is, Hark the Harold angel's things--when it came to repairing your sail.

"Hark the Harald" well said!

Not really. It would mean some holes in the batten pockets, but that wouldn't affect the sailing ability, or the integrity of the sail. You'd need to chafe through most of the length of the batten pocket to cause a problem, which would be that the sail could pull away from the battens when on starboard tack - but it's hard to see that happening. Still a good call to make good and fit the carpet - it will make for a quieter time in light conditions. And preserve the paintwork on the mast.

I wonder if some sort of lubricant might be helpful? Maybe beef tallow, like Kevin Boothby prefers to use on his gaff rigged boat.

Have you considered making your way to the NC Maritime Museum at Beaufort, NC? They have a boat building workshop across the street from the museum. The workshop is right on the waterfront.

Maybe you should have gone With Layers of Epoxy then polish with 400 sandpaper. Natural finish be Better. Or Carbon Fiber Mast and look at the Weight saving?
