Here’s a breakdown of my budget and boat projects:
Boat Expenses:
Hull: $1461
Rudder: $200
Rigging: $5000
Diesel: $1577
Plumbing: $1574
Electrical: $5768
Instruments: $583
Other: $1156
Shipping: $1440
TOTAL: $18,800
Funding:
$3000 from an anonymous donor, which covered 3/5 of my electrical expenses
$5500 from an anonymous donor, which covered my new diesel bladder bag, the new rigging including the roller furler, plus a portion of the epoxy and barrier coat
$5500 from selling my old boat, which covered the compost toilet, Coppercoat, my Honda Chaly (which I will sell later on), Starlink, motor-related purchases, and shipping fees
$1400 assistance from my parents to get remaining mast equipment while the mast is out
TOTAL: $14,000
I’m making about $1500 from Patreon and RU-vid. I spend about $500/month on myself (food, laundry, water, bills, dining, misc). I spend about $600 on yard fees and the boat payment. The remaining $400 goes towards the boat and over the past six months, that has totaled up to be about $2800. I also did some sewing projects, which got me another $700. This brings the $14,000 to about $17,500.
Boat Payment - purchase price of $25,000 (negotiated down from $45,000)
I got $3700 from the GoFundMe that my friend set up, which covered the boat’s down payment. Since July, I’ve paid an additional ~$1580, bringing the loan to below $20,000.
Anticipated Expenses:
Maybe another $5,000? I still need to cover the cost of the labor repairs for the rudder, plus the materials and labor repairs to the bowsprit and bumpkin, and also the cost of running rigging. And who knows what else will come up :)

I was heartened to learn that the project has actually drawn you and your folks closer. You have chosen an extremely complicated rabbit hole to go down in the repair and restoration of this beautiful boat. I know a bit about boats and you are going about it with such intelligence and grit. Your folks should deservedly be very proud of you.

Having been through a similar restoration project on my previously neglected 1971 33ft Hallberg-Rassy, i totally relate to you feeling like you're making it much worse while breaking it down. I've had nearly identical issues with the hull blisters, mast cracked, wood rotten, wires corroded, teak deck leaking... the list goes on and on... But i fell in love with the soul of my beautiful boat and was able to see it through in about 2 years time. I aso see a beautiful soul in your boat and your's is being linked with her through this repair/love dance you two are going through. Very soon you'll be putting her together and dressing her up, and then splash, and then you'll start your journey together. By than, both of you will go through a re-birth for each other and you'll become forever connected by the magic of souls, sweat, tears, blood, generosity, uncertainty, faith and love. I'm so happy for your success ⛵️

While seeing that your hull is still unpainted, I've decided to suggest a bottom paint that most people are not aware of for a number of reasons. I'll start with reasons to use it in your case, if still possible. It is a Proline Vinyl CQ1088 hard bottom paint and can serve up to 8 years between bottom jobs. It has to be applied directly on a barrier coat, but can not go over any other paint. Why not that many people use it? - It is more expensive. Nearly all hulls need to be stripped to the barrier coat before applying it - too much work. Companies do not put it on their new boats, because an average grade paint is cheaper, more readily available and they get a great volume discount from brand name producers. The Proline company is owned by Sherwin-Williams and mostly sells it's paint to Boeing for airplane painting. The same vinyl paint I was mentioning, is also used on large commercial vessels. I've put it on my boat, due to similar blisters issue, I had to grind her down to the bare hull and then started building it up with a Proline barrier coat. Also, I would suggest to replace a typical boot stripe, with a slightly wider bottom paint stripe, if you plan to spend more time anchored out. Because normal sea splashing will cause growth on a normal boot stripe and above it, making extra, now in your process preventable, unnecessary work. Please let me know if you have any questions.

I feel like a boat that has been getting tore down but I’m tough than most and I must continue my boat projects and head towards Rio Dulce Guatemala 🇬🇹 you will reach a 100 thousand on RU-vid for sure and it is a tough journey and one could have bought a brick home and 5 acres but I choose a boat which equals Freedom 🎉cheers from 🤠

I watch about a dozen sailing channels and I just ran across yours. I've picked and choose a few of yours to watch. Looks like you're doing ok with subscribers and interested people. Good for you ! You have quite a project in this video but, looks like your initiative is non-waivering. Just remember what the prize will be at the end of the projects. Your boat will be awesome ! Take care, be careful to not getting hurt and good luck on everything. Thank you for your work on the video, on editing and for sharing.

When you run the wires in the mast think about tying some short lengths of foam to the wires so that the wires do not make noise inside the mast.
@Foxholeatheist
@Foxholeatheist 7 месяцев назад
You can also use wire ties... three at 120 degree angles from each other will center the wire loom in the mast. But aside from that, DEFINITELY leave a spare piece of twine inside the mast from end to end to fish wires through in the future.
@SailingArtha

Okay, good idea.

@@Foxholeatheist indeed. the heavy duty zip ties every 2-3 feet leaving the long tails on so they stick out like the 3 legs on a Mercedes Benz icon. that keeps the wires off the metal edges inside the mast.

Very impressive project... You'll get her in the water in a state she hasn't enjoyed in years... You will be the envy of any anchorage... A Restored old classic always turns heads... She has to fly Tan sails... When she is sailing around, you can legitimately charge for boat repairs... You will be an experienced boat restorer...

Thank you!!! I know some people recognize the work and behind the scenes that goes into something like this, others don’t. I appreciate this comment. I know my head always turned when there was a classic boat in the anchorage. It’s crazy to think that I now have one. My sails are good for now I hope, but when I do upgrade, I will definitely do Tanbark!!! I’m actually planning my canvas color scheme with that in mind. Thanks for watching and commenting.

You shouldn't be afraid to ask for help, we are social creatures and no one was meant to live alone, anyone would be delighted to help you. I get sad to see so many beautiful boats with damage that's come from neglect, rotten blocks, rotten sheets, corroded fixings, prevention is better than cure and keeping on top of it is often less hassle than having to do a big repair. Best of luck with the next steps! ✌️👊

Hey! These boats can go for $150k in good condition. The boat was listed for 45k and after doing a self survey, I negotiated it down to 25k because of the work I knew I’d have to put into the boat. I feel 25k is a fair price for a Bristol Channel Cutter that needed a season’s worth of work. I am just now breaking even on the amount I saved and what I’ve put in. Thanks for the thought, but I strongly feel the boat itself is worth something, otherwise I wouldn’t be investing so much time, energy and money into it. 😊
@les9920
@les9920 7 месяцев назад
@@SailingArtha wow I’m not a sailor but really enjoy the process seeing the boat rebuilds and yours in particular. Sounds like you got a bit of a bargain at 25k in that case and good to know everything has been planned ahead with the refurbishment. X

I don't know about working with composites, but the way I eliminated the mast intrusion into the living space was to distribute the mast forces through the roof by using an arc port to starboard,one mast to bow and one that splits to the stern to accommodate the entrance. This distributes the forces around the perimeter of the hull to the keel. This allows for a stronger roof, and a stronger mast because I always hear of freak waves 🌊⛵️ splitting roofs and smashing rigging.

I’m not sure. The BCC manual that is listed on the BCC forum has the rudder specs as “Mahogany Rudder, 2.5” thick tapered to 3/4” on aft edge, 6x3/8” drifts.” So I assume most of the BCC rudders were originally wood and maybe it’s just the newer rudders that were glass/foam sandwich.

It is WAYYYY TOO HOT and Wayyy too damn/wet to have those there I PROMISE YOU They will be COOKED and Destroyed in no time No Joking here Kiddo You cannot leave those there whoever did that , the wiring looks great and neatly done , but that area will be over 100 degrees F when that engine is running and the dirt and moisture with heat Like ---- very poor placement
