Michaela Jill Murphy is an American voice, film, and stage actress. She is known as the voice of Toph Beifong in the animated Nickelodeon television series "Avatar: The Last Airbender". Michaela's voice has been featured in several animated movies, including Meet the Robinsons, Over the Hedge, The Ant Bully, Finding Nemo, The Emperor's New School, and Brother Bear 2.

In March 2007, this episode received a Genesis Award from the Humane Society of the US in the category "Outstanding Children's Programming" for its portrayal of how animals have been used in circuses. The dart the beetle-headed merchants used against Appa contained shirshu spit, so it's the same spit used to try to paralyze the Gaang in Bato of the Water Tribe by June. The reason they wear beetles on their heads is because according to lore, their ancestors lived underground and survived the attacks of giant gilacorns (the lizard you saw) by mimicking the appearance of the distasteful sour beetles, the only creatures on the desert floor not palatable to gilacorns. Also, something to note is that the sand-sailer that Appa destroyed at 2:35 is the same one that the Gaang found in The Desert episode! So if it wasn't for Appa destroying it, they wouldn't have been able to easily traverse the desert to the giant rock!

It wasn't shown here, but the umbrella that a sandbender retrieves from Appa's saddle is the same one that Team Avatar got from the calm man in The Fortuneteller. It was revealed in Avatar Extras that Appa was bought by the circus to replace Ty Lee after Ty Lee joined Azula. And yup, the footprint is important since it's the same one seen in the Tale of Momo. When Appa is landing in the city, we see three pygmy pumas. So when Momo goes searching for Appa in Tale of Momo, these are the pygmy pumas that lead Momo to Appa's footprint. Fun fact: The voice actor for the boy in the circus who helped Appa was also Zach Tyler Eisen just like Aang. So not only did the kid's kindness and laughter reminded Appa of Aang, but also they were really the same person with the voice being the same too. Aang "sensing" Appa in the city way before he's actually there may have something to do with the swamp episode, that swamp guy says how time is an illusion which explains why Aang has a vision of Toph before actually meeting her, you could apply that logic to Aang sensing Appa in the city too, because that's where he WILL meet

I know a lot of people who think this episode is one of the saddest in the series. Really I think the entire end to season 2 is kind of a bummer but that doesn’t mean this episode is any less sad. I also think this episode does a good job at visual storytelling, as most of the cast isn’t in it so it’s mainly just Appa, and he can carry an episode by himself surprisingly well. I think what I learned about this episodes reception is one quick way to make a person feel bad is putting harm to animals.

I love how the boy at the circus echos Aang! It’s cool how the free spirit of the airbenders hasn’t gone anywhere, even if the people are no longer around.

Every time I hear that jerk of a circus runner say Appa’s previous owner has no idea how to handle him, I just want to jump through the screen, laugh uncontrollably at his face, and blurt out, “OH BOY, LITTLE DO YOU KNOW. YOU’LL REGRET BELIEVING THAT NONSENSE SOMEDAY”.

This is such an important episode and links key moments. The fall of ba sing se is linked to Suki being defeated as they steal their outfits and sneak into the palace, Suki gets thrown into the boiling rock because of it. There are so much key elements in it. I really hope this isn't skipped in the LA

I love the parallel between Appa and Zuko's journey. Despite Appa coming from a loving and safe relationship, the cruel side of the world still manages to turn him fearful and hostile. While Zuko - coming from an abusive relationship - manages to find good people that want the best for him, which turns him into a caring and loving person. It's an eye-opener to how the world affects us despite our upbringing, showing the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people.

Fun theory I've heard. From Appa's perspective we hear what people are saying. From Momo's perspective people sound like gibberish. So it can be assumed that Appa understands what people say to him.

Some creatures featured this episode, Rhinoceros Beetle, Lion Vulture, Gilacorn, Buzzard Wasps, Mongoose Lizards (the animals that Team Azula rides) and Boar-Q-Pine! The darts used to drug Appa were counted in venom of the shirshu (the animal that June rides back in season 1)!

Back to back sad episodes. Although it did show even when Appa wasn’t with the team he still saved them by blowing the sand ski into the sand which is found and used by the team

I recently learned that Suki should've died in this episode. That would've made Azula's taunts towards Sokka during 'Day of the Black Sun' really dark as she would've been the one to kill her. I'm glad the producers left her alive. I don't know why but as a kid I never made the connection that Azula and her crew stole the outfits in this episode lol Makes even more sense why Suki was burning for revenge later on as her defeat was one of the main events which lead to the Fall of Ba Sing Se. I'm sure Azula would've found another way to ifiltrate the city but the dusguise made the whole affair probably easier.

While this episode can be challenging to watch...I get it. Seeing the struggles Appa endured makes that reunion that much sweeter for the viewer. It allows us to feel some of the love Aang has for Appa. I can't wait to watch the rest...and if you can convince Grey to come visit you for an Azula episode, I think that would be pretty cool.

I thought it was a necessary episode, not just to see Appa's side of things, but it also contains some important bits of information, such as the fact that the Kyoshi Warriors were engaged in battle with Azula and co. the last time we saw them, which becomes important later when the Gaang hears the Kyoshi Warriors will be joining them in Ba Sing Se. (Which might be a hint that not all is what it seems.) And Guru Pathik is introduced here too, I thought it was important to see how Appa got that missive, it would've been weird to just have them receive a note from some rando after they're reunited. It is in some ways a filler episode, but it also ties together seemingly separate parts of the story and characters in a way that's just brilliant.

I like that they do not pull punches. But i also like that it isn’t gratuitous, endless misery. I don’t need misery or torture p*rn (something that shows up in Korra BTW). The fact that Appa has ups and down makes the misfortunate twists worse.

Side note but i do feel bad for the two farmers. Living in a rural arial wild animal breaking into your bard is a serious danger. Even a medium size animal can hurt you or your family. And a wild animal can consume or destory the good and supplies your family worked hard for and needs to live off of. It is a bad situation for both parties is what i am saying. Not that the farmers handle it well. Waving spines and fire in a large animal’s face is not a recipe for safety.

I'm not gonna lie, I HATE this episode! I think we can all agree why. 😭 No it's not a bad episode by any means. It's a masterpiece but it's also just extremely painful watching what Appa had to go through. As someone who loves animals and loves Appa, this is by far the hardest episode to watch!

I like the episode, I like the whole series. However, with this being a relatively visual episode, it's hard for someone like myself who is Visually impaired to get the full extent unfortunately.
