😀 Welcome to Sailing Artha 😀
Hi there, my name is Nicole, and my single-handed journey began in 2022 on a Columbia 26. It now continues on my new boat, a 28’ Bristol Channel Cutter named Artha (the name translates to “that which allows one to pursue her dream.”) I’m on a giant adventure of seeing the world and leaving it a better place! Follow me as I experience all the hard and fun times of this lifestyle. Thanks for watching, subscribing, and commenting.

Servicing winches is always a messy pain. And there's all those little parts that want to jump in the ocean. Using too much grease on the winches can trap saltwater and cause electrolysis. The first couple years I thought more grease was better, then learned to use as little as possible. Finally after a few years, I settled on using synthetic oil, like gun oil or Mobil 1 car oil. At the end of a year, even with much blue water sailing, the oil would still be in place, providing lube. You're gettin' there Nicole. Good job!

The problem with trying to spread those flanges is they kept springing back into their old position after Dan removed it from that pipe. In the amount of time he did all that hammer hitting you could have taken a small torch heated up those flanges as it was around that white pipe to keep it spread . Heating it on the pipe makes the metal take its new 'shape' and more importantly cooling while still on it, keeps the new width intact. Then remove and install. When it comes to metal work Heat is your friend !

I think a good cry is healthy. I believe it’s been shown to release chemicals that build up in the brain. Glad you found a solution, you are inspiring!

As this is a "job done" vid these are just suggestions for others doing this. I believe Nicole's idea of "Adding heat and bending" was spot on. Brute force and bronze can equal breaks or cracks especially in more colder climes. I may have heard wrong but if the reinforcement was just thickened resin when you are adding resin for strength you need to use fiberglass as well. It is my understanding that resin with powder alone will be great for bonding but not structural. A great way to see this is if you let a layer of resin and powder dry in an ice cream container, pull it out and break it into shards by hand. Add glass, especially woven, and it's completely different. Not that you asked but with that job in particular (if it was just a powder bog so far) I would, skuff the entire surface, place plastic milk bottle tops over the nuts, lay 2 layers of dual bias 400 weave about 300mm wide, (what that in old measurements 1foot?) and whilst still wetted out cut in to expose the bottle tops without going through. When set cut tops out of bottle tops to expose nuts. This would not sort out the lack of strength taken away by having removed the Y shaped steel previously. I think this was vital as the force from the sail puts uplift on the bolts through leverage on the sprit. I would think that would need a similar steel backing plate reinstalled with the bolts going through it, but as a "for now" when underway, glassing would at least reinforce that area.

there are razor blade knives and there are razor knifes, which is the one you want, razor blade knife are more for stripping paint or tape off of windows or doors etc. and are somewhat more dangerous for use especially for wire stripping : )
