Running your lathe in reverse and with a tool held upside down is fine ONLY as long as your chuck is not a thread on chuck. Otherwise you run the risk of having the chuck move off the mounting face or worse, coming off putting a hole in your shop wall. :)

Happy belated Thanksgiving Jimbo! I hope you packed your gut with turkey and all the great trimmings and you enjoyed time with family. I also wanted to let you know how thankful I am for your weekly videos, they always give me something to look forward to, I know that makes me sound lame, but I’m not able to work since a stroke caused by an AVM when I was in my early 20s and the emergency brain surgery to remove the AVM caused damage to that section of my brain and the scar tissue caused pretty severe seizures, but thank God I was able to undergo brain mapping and resection in early 2019 to get the seizures under control and thankfully after a few complications caused by clotting and 3 brain surgeries in less than 7 days, my life has been drastically changed for the better. I can now live alone without a constant fear of death from an out of control seizure. That’s a long story to say I have so much to be thankful for, but most of all, I’m thankful God saved my life and my soul. Again thank you Jimbo for your weekly videos. Once a week videos are great, anymore and it would work you to death and the videos maybe wouldn’t be as special to us who eagerly await the Sunday uploads. Stay safe buddy and God bless. -JJ

I seen an episode of Motor Trends engine masters where they crimped header tubes with a hammer and dyno tested them after each time they hammered dents into the headers. It took an amazing amount of hammering on the header tubes to affect the horsepower output so you little dent in your downpipe should not matter at all.

I really think with the power and mileage of that kubota, and with the lightweight aerodynamic body of that Insight, this is going to be the closest you've come to building a useable "car". For the electric fuel pump. To make it stop leaking, it is to wire up a 100 ohm variable resistor/rheostat. By doing so, you control the amount of flow by reducing pump power. I install an electric lift pump by factory update on a 08 Duramax to solve the vacuum lift pump on the high pressure pump (Low fuel rail pressure code). It leaked fuel at the weakest part of the fuel line which is in front of the charge air cooler intake to the crossover valley. Had to reduce the psi or it keeps leaking.

First-gen Insight is my dream car and I was lucky to get one in great shape with relatively low miles. It doesn't upset me that you think it looks weird; it does look weird, compared to lots of other cars. But that's mainly because most other car designs don't care nearly enough about efficiency, while they pulled out almost all the stops pursuing efficiency with this car. It's form following function, and I'll take that every time even if it means the car stands out (despite the fact I don't like standing out).

Twin charge it!! Use both super charger and turbo. Make a valve that pipes the turbo into the supercharger when the boost is higher than the intake pressure. Using a leaking valve so it can build some pressure, the diverter can just shut off the inlet to the supercharger. So all air comes from the turbo. After it's spooled up. Maybe use a bypass to put the supercharger out of the system, diverter it's outlet to it's inlet. And the turbo pressure can be used to operate the valve. Give it 8-10psi from idle till the turbo spools up! Awesome, and happy thanks given

Heads up, I had a problem with my OM617 diesel swapped Dalota. My fuel return and pickup line were too close to each other in the tank. This allowed the pickup to collect some air. It wasn't a problem for short trips. But, after a 20 miles stretch at 65mph, my truck would surge and act like it was running out of fuel when idling at the redlight. I had the tank and fuel system in and out mutiple times chasing this gremlin. The fix was adding a 12" piece of hose to the fuel return so it ended up away from the suction.

Nice job Jimbo! I like that with each build, seeing the increased refinement, making the car more practical and less of a rolling lab experiment. Thanks for deciding to use the belly pan, so with all the body panels in place, I expect to see gas mileage to easily get into the 70+ mpg range with the car's light weight and 0.25 drag-coefficient.
@chrissuessle
@chrissuessle 8 месяцев назад
I haven’t read any of the comments, but just so you know for future projects those gasoline engine fuel pumps work perfectly fine for Diesel, at least in the Audi and Volkswagen World they are actually the same part numbers for certain models, gas or diesel, and I have done many diesel conversions to other manufactures and had zero issues using the original fuel pump. now second a cheap $12 fuel pressure regulator from Amazon or eBay works perfect to lower the pressure down to about seven psi for the diesel to run, but you do need a return to the tank. But almost any diesel needs a return back to the tank anyway.
@eDoc2020
@eDoc2020 8 месяцев назад
Gasoline pumps may work for diesel but I do not believe the opposite is true. Diesel-only pumps (and other components) may rely on the lubricity of the fuel for proper continued operation.
@chrissuessle
@chrissuessle 8 месяцев назад
From my experience, OEM electric lift pumps for diesels seem to survive fine with gasoline. But aftermarket ones “mostly” cannot tolerate gasoline if they were made for diesel. And of course, mechanical diesel fuel injection pumps won’t survive very long when used with gasoline because they rely on the viscosity of diesel fuel to function properly.
@Handerra

gasoline pump works fine in diesel fuel, fwiw. But you really don't need/want it, so it's all good that you deleted it. :) You can cut the little funnel thingy out of the filler neck so the diesel nozzle fits in it. The mechanical fuel pump should work fine, but if you do end up with issues, you could always replace it with a 'clicker' type electric fuel pump, they're really cheap (like, $5 cheap), and both reliable and super common (so if it does break, it's very easy to get a replacement at any auto parts store or online)
@robotcantina8957
@robotcantina8957 8 месяцев назад
The local filling station uses the ultra large diesel nozzles on their pumps, These outdated nozzles make it impossible to directly fill the tank even if we gut the filler neck.

Superchargers take power to make power. They work but you pay in increased fuel consumption. Turbos _can_ be a free ride: power when you want it, economy the rest of the time. Not invariably, of course. Consider a remote turbo installation. Hang the turbo completely out of the engine bay, park it somewhere in the tail. It adds a tiny bit of lag but not enough so you'd really notice - especially not when you're driving a diesel Insight. Too much other stuff is weird already; turbo in the spare tire compartment is just one more freckle on this particular spotted cow. Fun thing about a remote turbo, the big delivery pipe running back up to the engine bay is sufficient intercooling for most applications.
@robotcantina8957
@robotcantina8957 8 месяцев назад
We tried the turbo on this engine when it was in the Saturn and it worked good , but not great. You see, we used the smallest turbo that was available and it was still too big. The supercharger experiment is exactly that, its an experiment to see how it will work on the little diesel. Experiments like this may not make sense, but most of the audience wants to see unusual experiments.
