When Google was young they used to say "Don't be evil", you say you won't go over to the dark side but as soon as you get rich and famous you'll change too! You'll start putting lawnmower engines in Maserati's and Ferrari's, just wait. I really enjoyed this video, Sundays wouldn't be the same without Robot Cantina, great dedication.

A group of scientists conducted a study to figure out why crows often manage to avoid being hit by cars but still sometimes end up as roadkill. They observed that crows are incredibly smart birds, able to work together and communicate warnings when danger is near. In fact, when they see a car approaching, the lookout crow always caws loudly, alerting the others to fly away just in time. But, after months of research, the scientists discovered the problem: crows can say “Caw! Caw!” to warn about American cars… but none of them know how to say “Renault!”

You know, I used to drive a 1997 Subaru legacy outback that had piston slap in cylinder 2. You could hear it tapping at anything under 1100 revs. It made that sound the whole time I drove it. It gave me 98,000 leisurely trouble-free miles. Great car.

Those ports are great! Large, "tunnel" shaped, and matched perfectly to the gasket with appropriately polished surface.

That thing definitely sounds sporty roaring down the road! Sounds faster than it is.

It simply amazes me that with all of the performance modifications done to this car through some miracle the exterior paint somehow manages to still be adhered to the car!

MartyT was the guy who turned me on to greasing one side of the gasket so it will come off the next time you take things apart! Great videos!

Hi Jimbo For what it’s worth, 70mph would have been a perfectly respectable top speed for such a car, as it left the factory. If you envisage going much faster, you really need to invest in suspension and brake performance modifications, similar to those available at the time. I bet you never thought you’d need to consider that, with your lawn mower motor modifications.

I love the R&D you've shown us here. It has been extremely inspirational. I have wanted to create a range extender for cheap used 1st gen EVs like Nissan Leaf, Focus EV, 500e, Smart EV, iMiEV, Spark EV, ect where a reciever hitch is mou ted on the back with a 5th wheel mounted on a hinged arm with a coilover for damping and articulation, powered by an engi e like this. Its only job would be to maintain steady speeds on mainly level ground, accelleration, in town, traffic would all be electric and any steep hills at higher speeds the electric drive could again step in. It would essentially trick the ev into thinking it is coasting. Its a perfect job for a small engine like this, all accessories are handled by the car electrically, all the power can be aplied directly to this 5th wheel behind it. I would say that even if only 30-50mpg was possible depending if you are cruising at 45mph or 80mph, the rare occasion ypu wpuld need to go a cpuple hundred miles in a day on the highway or B roads, the cost and convience is totally worth it. Of course to make a contraption like this worth it, you would probably need to keep the price down to a couple thousand dollars at most, then add a $2000-5000 old EV with 45-70miles of range. It would be a good alternative to people who cant afford a new $35,000+ automobile for basic subsistance uses and they can't afford to drive a cheap but bulletproof old truck or car around that gets 8-12mpg either. This research is great and I think that there could be a few people out there turning these engimes into transportation.

One of these days you need to do a fully loaded test. Weigh it down with the equivalence of 4 people and luggage. As if you were going on vacation with the family in France. Then see what acceleration is like.

Although it probably won't happen I would love to see a cross over vid with Greg from red beards garage, not for all out power but i bet he could help with tuneing for better low end torque and help with better rods ,valve springs and camshaft...oh and a flywheel that doesn't shatter if you over rev it . You were the chosen one! You were suppose to not play with the Subaru, not join them!

I just noticed that using the CVT clutch behind the Predator engine makes the Renault shift like an EV conversion that uses a manual transmission as part of the drivetrain. Transmissions are commonly used on low voltage settups (less than 180V) where the motor rpm can't go high enough to reach freeway cruising speeds if the gearing was setup for optimal acceleration. These cars are driven similarly to the Renault except that the acceleration gear is usually 2nd and the speed gear is usually 3rd. And you could drive the car in third, or even 4th all the time if you were willing to live with the less than stellar acceleration. It's a curious coincidence that two very different drivetrains could act the same way.

I can see more speed and better fuel economy coming soon! a couple of side air intakes feeding those carburettors (air fed from a non-heated source + some free ram-air charging effect) plus a lid stuck on the engine bay for better aerodynamics. note 1: those who use no assembly lubrication rely on the farce, may the farce be with them! note 2: the 9mm wrench was designed to be beaten onto a rounded 3/8" (9.5mm) head 😁

Its about time you put some variable ignition timing on this engine, with some nice oversize coils and pulstar plugs. ;-)

Nothing wrong with a "Because I can" sort of project. You never know who will be inspired by a project such as this. I wish I could ride along sometimes and just get a better feel of the acceleration. I imagine this would be an OK in-town rig.

The ports look fine. The normal thing to do is to match the ports to the gaskets but those already match.
