This is the fun stuff. Everyone on RU-vid wants to build an LS motor. Anyone can obviously do that. These are the real mechanics. How small an engine can we stuff in this tiny car and then send it as fast as we can down the road, whilst attempting to get 78mpg and all with normal tools that normal people own! How are they not at a million subscribers yet?

Cutting 12 seconds off the 0-55 time with only 5 pounds of boost is incredible, I was not expecting that! Very curious to see how the projected 8psi does 👍 always the highlight of my Sunday mornings, this is as close to church and spiritual enlightenment as I get 🤣
@TykeMison_
@TykeMison_ 7 месяцев назад
5PSI is a 34% increase in cylinder pressure/air charge and while there are losses, generally converts to a ~25% power gain. For a small output engine strained by a road car, "only 5 pounds" is a lot of power gain. For comparison, a 300hp engine with 5PSI boost would be making 375. 5PSI is a lot.

@@TykeMison_ it’s really not, diesels are made for high cylinder pressures. The only reason I said “only 5psi” is because jumbo said that he was shooting for around 8……and 5 is less than 8 ya know

@@TykeMison_You made the point I was about to but I will add a small detail. When the fuel is shot in at higher pressures, it burns faster and more completely. On an engine what wasn't really designed to be all that clean and efficient this could add more power to the output from the same amount of fuel. Remember his exhaust temperatures were lower. In the opinion of Mr. Carnot, that means the engine part is more efficient.

Unlike the turbo, which made boost at higher rpms, the supercharger made boost even at lower rpms, which didn't raise the hp much from the turbo, but did raise the torque. So most of the gains are in the lower rpms.

Your egt alarm at 1000°F is very conservative. Generally 1200 to 1250 is safe. Diesels like the extra air. Adding more air drops egt's and makes more power due to more complete combustion. They prefer to run lean rather than rich. This is all assuming your charge air temps are not too high, thus intercoolers. Also, diesels are typically the most fuel efficient at about 600°F egt's. For your fuel economy testing try to keep it around that range for max economy. Love what you've been doing with these little cars. It been very enjoyable to see you do these crazy little projects!

Depends what original beetle. The 1940s versions had a 1.2 liter or smaller, with 20hp, but the newer ones 1.4l had 25hp, probably 30-32hp new. The last model years got a 1600cc, with I believe 40hp. So that's double the power of this engine. The beetles will definitely go faster uphill at 45mph than this.

These diesels have very high compression ratios to get the most out of them without forced induction. They tend not to get much from boost above 10psi, well they do but they tend to burn holes through the piston crowns. In Australia and Africa, the Toyota 1HZ is a legendary old lumbering NA diesel used in some small trucks and the Toyota landcruiser. People have been turbocharging them forever and usually 10PSI as a rough rule of thumb seems good. Anything much above that seems to blow the engines up unless they've had stronger pistons put in, usually with a reduced compression ratio of about 20:1 or 22:1 down from the factory 24:1. These kubota diesels are very similar with a 24:1 or 25:1 comp and the same style of fuek injection. If at all possible, now you have 2 of them I'd love to see you try and jury rig a reduced compression ratio, maybe by putting in a thicker head gasket? If you want a very cheap but even sketchier mod. Make a basic water methonal injection system. If you want to go even further you can mix a bit of nitromethane into the water methanol mix lol.

Customer had a landcruiser with a 1hz and an old school greddy turbo kit on it, popped the turbo, I put a modern more efficient (and much larger lol) turbo on. came on boost sooner and harder kept the greddy wastegate and boost control setup, IIRC it was set about 12 psi. Things been around for forever and never skipped a beat. perhaps our cooler climate in scotland helps. I didn want to run the fuel up a bit more, it certainly felt like it would have benefited but the customer was already happy with the increase in usable power.

If I'm married to a certain boost pressure, a pulley makes sense. I rarely am and sometimes want to have different settings for different situations. For instance, I ran 17 psi on the street (which arguably made it too fast for the street and made torque steer a mother lover, but didn't blow stuff up on pump gas) and 30 psi when running race fuel on the track with my weekend racer. A diverter valve is almost as cheap and gives me options in the future without having to source and buy different pulleys in the future.

An interesting thought that would be way too hard to implement would be to make the engine run Atkinson cycle by changing the cam and then upping the boost a little more. Atkinson cycle involves holding the intake valve open a little longer so that some of the charge is pushed back out of the cylinder. This lowers the peak pressure at TDC. In theory, one change would undo the other but we know that the only difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.

Acceleration tests suggest about 35hp range at 5-ish psi. The 8-10 you're looking for should get you to the low 40's, with torque numbers resembling a N/A 1000cc gasoline engine. 0-60 numbers resembling the quarter mile times of a 1971 Beetle is more than respectable for an Engine I'm betting will still provide 70+mpg on your fuel mileage test. A driven pulley roughly the same diameter as the oem driven pulley should get you close to where you want to be. After that, an intercooler (and possibly a larger drive pulley change to compensate for the pressure/flow characteristics of the intercooler) would be the next 'safe' step for moderate power gains while still limiting the potential for engine damage. Pulleys and intercooler should allow you to match the beetle in acceleration, while maintaining fuel milage. All engines are air pumps, and diesel like being on boost more than most simply by design. Good luck.

You probably got from 20hp to 27 hp with the 5 psi boost. Most of the gains will be from the torque, gained at lower rpms. I'd say you could definitely do with the old pulley. At 1.4x I'd guess the boost would go from 5psi to a solid 7-10 psi.

Pretty impressive improvement there to the acceleration, it's about right for a sub-1L diesel car really, and still plenty more to give I'm sure... :)

That's awesome! I'm so happy it works. Like I said before, turbo lag on small engines seems so bad, the supercharger might make more sense. And apparently it does! Crank that boost up :D

There was testing in the early 90s about supercharging diesel for improved efficiency and reduce soot. Theoretically, under boost, diesel engines are more efficient but turbos are always behind the fueling. Maybe with low boost there might be an MPG improvement, but at higher boost levels the parasitic lost of the amr500 might overcome the benefits. It’ll be fine to see where the balance of power and efficiency flips with different boost levels.

I could be mistaken but think that the fuel economy of a turbo charged engine is slightly better than supercharged. Logic would tell me that the parasitic load of a super charger at low RPM would be part of the equation. Does anyone KNOW much on that topic?

Almost 13 seconds quicker to 55 is amazing. Now imagine testing with the original boost numbers and seeing how much better she accelerates,and if there's any top speed gains...

This is pretty awesome. I’d say that alarm likely wouldn’t have tripped if you were running that boost through an intercooler. Seems to me that the car is pretty drivable around town.

Maybe throw the smaller stock pulley with the original belt drive. FYI tractor supply, farm and fleet or big r sell pulleys for quite cheap. Universal type where you buy the center hub separately from the pulley.

Just because the egts are lower, it doesn’t automatically means the Eta ist higher. You have to take the air mass into account. 200g/s at 650C have more water heat in them, as 100g/s at 800C.

Gale Banks built a supercharged duramax recently and I believe he said he was making like 20 psi at idle. He ended up making a type of blow off valve so that at idle the air wasn’t going into the motor.

Wow! So are you going to make the engine work harder to drive the supercharger faster? With that plan, is it going to improve top end rather than bottom end? I thought having the torque is more important than the horsepower in this situation. Sure, boost is low, but consistent. Maybe a bit more to get around 8-10 pounds of boost to keep it "in the middle"?

fuel eonomy may be the same as before but fuel efficiency should have improuve, your car exhaust is not as black as before you are using the same amount but getting more hps also running the SC should help you low temperatur issue with the engine working harder producing more heat

shes coming along well. i say if youre still getting over 30 mpg its a win no matter what you lose over N/A compared to boosted. If you throw just a tiny bit more boost at it, you should be in the ballpark of where you want to be with this.

I hear Toyota is looking for a smaller engine for their fake line of trucks. When you get this thing perfected they maybe interested. They'll find a way to make it use more fuel but that's just Toyota. Can't wait for the next video. With so much going on in the world it's nice to see a story where no one is mad or hurt. Thank you

Since the crank pulley is smaller now, can you now use the original pulley on the supercharger. Its already there, so just move over the belt.

My 1991 Honda Civic 4-door, manual transmission car got 47 mpg on the highway as long as I kept it at or below 55 mph, with the tires inflated to sidewall-max PSI. And that was all-stock, no modifications. And I took very careful, manual MPG records.

It's a Diesel bro. It has ho boost limit, the only reason you limit boost is for the sake of the supercharger. More boost better EGTs, more power, smother running, the thing that you need to worry about is fuel amounts, too much fuel can tear that engine up faster than anything.

Running a longer belt and using the tensioner to hold it onto the pulley will give you better belt wrap and make belt slip way less likely. May not be an issue, since the blower isn’t very big. Just something to consider. Good content!
