Bob Hannah is a true legend of the sport. He defined an era with brash personality, his legendary podium antics but most of all with his riding. On his day he was unbeatable. His rivalries with Marty Smith, Kent Howerton, and Broc Glover were epic. Sit back and enjoy stories from one of the greatest riders to ever throw a leg over a dirt bike!

Bob still stands tall as one of the most significant impact players in American Motocross history. Not only a true grit racer but a no-nonsense person. In this age of "it's all about me", we could use more people like Bob. A man's man who worked for everything he got and took nothing for granted. Long live the Hurricane!

I have been waiting for this since 1979👍👍👍👍 Actually more like ‘77! I’m 56 and Hannah has been my hero since I was 10 years old…it seems strange to consider he isn’t that much older than me, but when you’re a kid, that 10 years makes a huge difference. The man does not disappoint! Between Hannah and DeCoster, a kid could not have better heroes to look up to. Thank you Whiskey Throttle for getting him pinned down and talking. Brilliant!!!!

I got to see Bob while he was training for the MXDN on the 125. He showed up to a local race in southern Idaho for a warmup before heading to Unadilla. Everyone in the sport at the time had reservations about Bob on a 125, including Hannah evidently. After seeing him ride that day, it was obvious that he was not going to lay down and be the one that cost the team the win. Very few people that stage of their career would take that chance. Legend.

Like Bob or not…he brought this sport that we all love to life in the 70’s and 80’s. Personality and effort to the max. I worshiped this guy as a kid! My very first MX race as a spectator was Unadilla 1978…Hannah vs “The Man”. That was my introduction to MX. I was so fortunate! Thank you for having Bob on your great show!

I got to see the results of him bailing off his bike during the last moto. Didn’t see the contact or lack thereof, but saw Hannah flying through the air. I had a super 8 movie camera but wasn’t filming at the time. Damn!! If any action photos actually exist I’d love to see them! I was standing down by the downhill/off camber left hairpin turn just before the finish line.

In '76 I lined up in a split start at Indian Dunes with Bob. I was a 125 int. and they spit start us with the pros. Hannah took off and got the holeshot for the pros on the international track. I remember my only goal that race was to go fast enough to not get lapped by him. I made it. I'm also in that photo at the "massacre".....

Thanks for this great gift, Ping and GL. Bob Hannah was THE superstar of the sport when I was a teenager. His tales are larger than life and he recalls things well. I thought that the 3 and half hours of the visit might be tough to fill but as it turned out, there were many things you guys did not get to, one being his HRP gear company that made the best-looking stuff in the business, perhaps of all time, with the HRP Flak-Jak and clothing. Hope there truly is a part two here sometime soon. Hannah is a treasure in our sport.

This is Twilight Zonesque....I'm 10 months older than Bob. I grew up riding a small Honda off road in my teens. One of my early jobs was as a welder. My first race bike I bought was a 74 Husky 250cr. My first race was July 6 1974. My parents would not allow me to race until I was out of high school. I was later talked into racing a 77 RM125 by the dealership that semi sponsored me. I disliked it also. I was 6ft 150lbs, racing kids years younger that weighed 40lbs less. That thing could have had a toggle switch for the throttle, it was either wfo or nothing. I had to row that 6 spd box like a boat to keep it on the pipe. Also went on to race open class and then back to 250s. I raced for 9 years as a hobby. Was told to turn pro, but never did. Where we differ, thankfully, I enjoyed my last race as much as my first. I also have an aviation background and have competed in xc skiing at a national level. And I also would rather do than spectate.

Read some comments where people were saying Hannah's overly arrogant. After listening to this, it's apparent they had a bad case of selective listening. As much as Hannah talks about his successes, he also talks about his failure. Never met the guy, but I might have indirectly. My friend and I were riding Bean Canyon back around 1995. I'm pretty sure that Hannah was already up in Idaho, so I'm not positive this was him. However, we're back at the truck next to one of the big washes that come down the mountain. Down comes this P-51 about eye level, which means it was basically in the wash. I can see the pilot looking over at us. He continues south then climbs and banks east. The scrub brush is about 8' tall in the area where we parked. Then, we hear this plane headed towards us. We stand up in the back of the pickup, and this thing flies right over our heads, low enough that we felt we needed to duck. I'm not positive it was Bob, but I suspect it might have been. If it was, I gotta thank the guy for the rush. Better than getting the man's autograph. I should add I wonder why guys who talk about being tough as a virtue support Trump so much, though. The guy was a coward, lying to avoid serving his country. As a Vet, I can't respect that guy one bit. Honestly, he's a silver spoon fed pussy. Big thanks to Ping, his people, and Bob for giving us this interview. WTS rocks.

The story Hannah told about him and Roger at Unadilla in 1978 and the smashed pipe, my cousin and I were standing there at the bowl at the very farthest point from the start / pits / Officials on the entire track. Bob said that he didn't think Roger did it on purpose and Bob did cut right across in front of Roger, but Roger pulled it up on the rear wheel and ran straight over Bob's bike right behind the triple trees and smashed the pipe shut with his rear tire. Bob went down, Roger bobbled and then he got on the gas and accelerated down the hill. Roger looked back up the hill and with his open face helmet you could see that he had a big smile......and it happened where no one could see it unless you were right there.

I was at the 1978 Anaheim Supercross or Gaylon Mosier won a rain shortened race. Hannah was mad he ended up Second. They had a special six lap race afterwards with all the previous winners that year . Hannah got out front and would stop in the corners and wave on second place until they got right up to him then he would go. I've never seen anything like it it was unbelievable. I also saw him racing local saddleback races where he would just fold his arms on the line and wait for the gate to drop let everybody go then he would go and he would still win.
