Pump timing retarderd too far, fuels still burning when it leaves the exhaust valve. You can tell by how long it takes the revs to pick up - would have been a bastard to start without ether. Happens with gasoline engines too if the ignition timing is retarded too much. The engine doesn't run any hotter, just the exhaust.
