S6:E4 NHL CREASE ANALYSIS | GOALIE FIGHTING | TIME AND SPACE READS
We show and discuss a drill that can improve a goalie’s positioning decisions based on the observed time and space pressure the shooter may have. When they have no pressure issues they will dig into their bag of tricks. When they have little room or time, they go to very basic attacks that allow the goalie to safely play out at the top of the crease. You must factor this in and make sure you play way more aggressively with depth holds whenever possible.
I outline my personal success as pro and D1 goalie fighting other goalies. I give you my strong opinions on the pros and cons of trying to teach the other goalie a lesson.
In our NHL Crease Analysis, we put the spotlight on Montreal Canadiens goaltender, Sam Montembeault. We look at stance height adjustments based on threat level, decisions to recover or maintain low net coverage, how to manage front net traffic on the PK and we see exactly how an NHL goalie moves around their crease in live game action. Clips courtesy of @chrisxdudo.

I really like the clips that stay on the goalie instead of scoring or save highlights. There’s so much more to learn from movements and tracking from these videos. Nice work!

I'm in my mid-thirties now and definitely in my prime. A lot more mature and focused than in my twenties and more experienced. The only time I will ever get aggressive with another player now is if they are aggressive with me, basically just to defend myself, but no more looking for trouble. Not once has that ever helped. The opposing team hates an ice cold goalie that they cannot read. Composure is the key to success. What's interesting is that I get injured a lot less now than I used to when I was younger. I haven't been injured in over 6 years now. You'd think it would be the opposite with age, but again, discipline and maximizing your movements' "efficiency" also leads to less sprains and injuries.

Trend? The last few years, I’m seeing more goalies standing straight up with their gloves out front and stick two or more feet off the ice. In games when opponent has possession in the zone. In practices, typically when repositioning. Not just to look over screens. Bad habit or trend? Is this being taught?
@FutureProGoaltending
@FutureProGoaltending 3 месяца назад
This is being taught and used effectively to conserve energy in non dangerous times. There are many times when the puck is in the zone that the threat is not imminent. Like side board scrums for instance.

@@FutureProGoaltending I'm a D1 (full ride) goalie from the 90"s. Puck in the zone, resting crouch at least. Rarely stood straight up with the puck on the other teams stick in the zone. It looks lazy. It looks bad. Don't like it.

@@FutureProGoaltending I'm also seeing more and more goalies moving and in their set position with stick two feet off the ice. Then bring it down when shot is on the way. Don't like that either.

@@FutureProGoaltending I’ve got a short video taken yesterday at a 19u tryout. Right in the middle of the drill. Arms up, body up, stick two feet off the ice, while taking the angle on a shooter. I’d like to get your opinion. Can we connect somehow?
