I've got a '05 9-3 2.0T and I can hear a rattle from the engine under medium load (no rattle at idle or on hard acceleration) after a cold start. I'm assuming it's the broken plastic chain tensioner issue common to this model. I'm in a position where I can have the car off the road for a few days now because of the Covid 19 shutdown. Since the parts for this repair are so inexpensive I'm going to go ahead and do it. I've had 4-5 of the common problems with this car and I've fixed them all (peeling buttons on the dash, lock actuator, hesitation/surging, window switches and Xenon issues). I hope this is the last one I have to do. Before I start, I'm wondering if there's anything else that it could be? You obviously have a ton of experience with Saabs, is there anything you can think of that might be causing that sound? I'm also getting poor mpg and substandard performance. After watching your video on vacuum leaks I think I know why the car is driving the way it is. Thanks for your great work. The videos are fantastic.
Its really hard to hard diagnose remotely, the chain issue usually appears at idle or very light throttle, rattling noise ive seen it coming from things u dont expect, like exhaust shields, turbo shaft and others. But the chain guide is one of the most common, and cheap to try
@@TheFlyingMechanicDIY Hello there, i recently bought a 9-3 2.0t, do you recommend a beginner to so services and change I.E timing chains on the car? Or is it generally better to put it on for service?
Picadilli , it depends on what level of knowledge and mechanical skill u have, if u r an average guy with the correct tools and ready to make some reading, then why not
Hello. Thank you for all the great content! If I am doing a Front Crankshaft seal on a 2004 9-3, is it necessary for me to set the timing before removing the bolt and pulley? Thank you- keep the great info coming! Peace
@@P4villians if u r only attempting to replace the crank seal then all u have to do is remove the wheel/arch/belt/crank pulley and then replace the seal.
@@TheFlyingMechanicDIY thank you- good to know. I was told it was far more involved, but I didn’t see how. Glad to hear you second that; very glad. Appreciate the responses!!!! Very much
new seal leaks apparently the fel pro crank seals for these are garbage according to what i read, victor reinz, possibly corteco might work better, ill let you know. I just ordered genuine saab and corteco seals from Eeuro. anywhoo, you think I can pop this seal out without pulling the cover again?
@@TheFlyingMechanicDIY Popped the seal out, cake work with seal remover tool. 13 bucks at advanced auto. ordered new seals like i said.. started the job and opened the box to put the new seal, and of course they didn't send what I ordered-the corteco. I got 2 so called genuine saab parts which are now the new Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) seals, (no inner spring on the seal lip).. skeptical, did some research and decided to use one since i have the car apart.. part AC delco 296-26, GM 251933519(no installation sleeve required for this model engine.). According to youtube research-with this material/seal you don't use any lube, oil, grease.. perfectly clean and should let them sit 4hrs after install to let the seal migrate around the shaft.. poor choice of words sorry :). After following all of the correct procedures, today i will take it for a drive and see if it leaks. In other news, always check your parts before you start which I normally do. I will report back if I have a leak of course. If not, Thanks fmDIY
Hello, thanks for all your vids. When I was replacing the front main seal a noticed a small, round spring that was a mangled up. Right around the area of the seal. Any idea what that could be from? Could have been inside the gasket? I'm at a lose.
Yes a circular spring sorry. About the same shape as the seal itself, but I didn't see a spring in the new seal. I just hoping it's not part of the timing system.
Hello my friend, I have returned as I often do to your videos before carrying out work on my b207r. I have a question please once again, i need to replace the front seal as you have done in this video, i will not be removing the timing chain cover at this point. Can you tell me, is there anything I need to be aware of whilst removing and refitting a new harmonic balancer? Specifically can i effect the timing by for example rotating the balancer in the wrong direction, or do i need to put the balancer back in the exact alignment it was removed? Or is none of that relevant and do I just need to rotate until It finds the keyway and locks in place? I will be using a impact wrench. Many many thanks in advance.
Sorry for late reply, removing or turning the crank pully will not affect timing, it is keyed to the crankshaft just make sure it goes into the key before start driving the bolt in
Silky G its actually a good idea to do so, ive done it many times so i learned where my mistakes would be. I inspect the gasket carefully if im reinstalling it, and i always replace the crank seal
