Couldn’t have done this without this video! Thank you. A few things to note, the metal ring in the cap is a spring and not the seal. I found the cap o-ring in a grove along the shaft a few mils from the top where the metal ring is. Also I found two seals in between the pump and the reservoir, very curious if anyone else has encountered this since the diagram on esaab only shows having one (mine is an 2006). I replaced the one that matched and kept the other on. The second seal was slightly larger and sat one step higher on the reservoir nipple. I also decided to skip doing the two seals that go on the valve where the banjo bolt screws into (thing was way too tight)

Didn't you bleed the whole system? By looking at the oil that came out of your pump the entire system will more or less look the same. So you should take the time to get all of that oil out. What i did was to put a jack on the subframe in the front then raise the car up. Then with the wheels free from the ground you can easily turn the steering wheel collecting all the oil coming out of the return pipe for the pump. As you do that you also fill the pump with fresh oil so you don't get any air bubbles in the system. The reason why doing all this is the different viscosity in the power steering oil and the motor oil that has leaked into the system.
@AutoAutopsy
@AutoAutopsy 4 года назад
Yeah, i didn’t replace all of the fluid, as the point of the video was replacing the gaskets and o-rings. Something I’ll probably do soon, however
@MN-bm2sy

I ended up flushing the system with Lucas power steering fluid leak stop and conditioner since it's cheaper than the CHF and will hopefully re-lubricate and condition all of the components in the rack etc. Then I drained and pumped the Lucas out and filed with CHF.. Also prestone makes the CHF fluid and it's slightly cheaper but a smaller bottle. 3 weeks gone by and so far so good!

Vaseline/petroleum jelly on o rings to protect them during installation. Also good to put Vaseline inside the lip of the seals. This helps prevent the seal lip from wearing both the seal and the shaft great video

That's exactly what I have to do on mine. Changing seals is the first thing to do since regenerating or buying a new steeringpump is expensive. Let me know what mileage your ride has and if the unit works well now. Thanks for the video, it's so detailed it encouraged me to do this job on my own.

@@AutoAutopsy So I did it on mine before yesterday following your video. However it's best to use a syringe to empty the black tank and to remove the lower return hose as last to avoid serious mess. :D The most terrifying moment was when during reinstallation of the whole unit the bottom bolt fell and got stuck somewhere on the engine block. I managed to recovered it with a long magnetized screwdriver. The safest way no to drop it is to realign the pump to the engine block with one bolt already inside the bottom bracket, keeping a finger on that bolt. Then it's easy to find the hole, pass the socket key and blindly tighten it. I also replaced all the liquid inside. You need at least 2 liters to replace the whole cycle. Before pouring new oil I reconnected everything to the pump except the lower return hose. Instead its tip ended up inside a random bottle for waste oil which fits nicely near the battery. I attached an 8mm pvc transparent hose to the remaining open inlet of the tank and raised its end above the level of tank's cap so the liquid won't escape (you can also clog tank's inlet with something). I poured the first dose of Febi 06161 synthetic oil inside the tank. 200-250mm is enough to fill it up. I started the engine for 2-3 seconds (the pump is super efficient), turned it off. In the meantime the pump emptied the tank and spit the old black oil inside the bottle. Then I turned the wheels one time to the left and one time to right (it's very hard, it's easier to do it with your front axle in the air). This pushed out even more dirty oil outside to the bottle. I emptied that bottle. I added the second dose of new oil and repeated everything few times (until I saw the fairly clean green oil coming out of the return hose. Of course it will never be clean, it's always mixed up. I left myself around 500ml of reamining new oil for the final tank refill - it's important. I reattached the return hose to the tank, filled up the tank, closed the tap and started the engine. I let it run for few minutes, turning wheels another few times. This way I removed all the air bubbles from the installation. I checked the oil level, filled it to F. Done :) The smoothness of turning is immediately, significantly improved.

@@Ptaq1990 good info in addition to original video! Very helpful for me as I'm doing this procedure today on my 07' with 108k miles. My steering system has been pumped so full of engine oil that the pump started making noise, so I'm hopeful fresh fluid and seals will be enough.. cheers

New O-rings recommended on those X injectors. They are cheap insurance, since they are right down in the cooking bowl under the intake and some are near the nuke plant too. might want to send the injectors off to be cleaned and flow tested, if they sat a long time or never have been. Fun projects!
@MassiveTrackHunter
@MassiveTrackHunter 4 года назад
Yes they are on both ends. The top ones are just stuck in the injector feed piping. Typical. One tip when pulling all of that apart. Cold motor, stuff paper towels around underneath of them to catch the fuel that will spill out, be cautious pulling the upper intake off to avoid loose debris like brittle wire loom bits falling into the lower intake and into the cylinders. I almost missed an inch-long section that ended up on the intake valve of #3 and would have been sucked into the cylinder, had I not retrieved it with a cable-grabber. Stuff a rag in each intake runner opening on the motor to keep crap out of them til your done.

@dnobxela68

The pump is driven by being directly attached to the crank case. The two seals done around 7:25 separate the engine oil from power steering pump. When they leak and fail, the fluids exchange.

A most excellent video, thank you. I'm watching because I have a 2010 9-3 with 178k miles, and the pump just puked out on the driveway. There's still assist when turning but it's like it's low on fluid, which obviously it is. So I'm guessing the pump's otherwise ok and it's time for a gasket set. Any idea if the procedure is much different for a 2010?

Just turn the steering wheel from lock to lock a few times. That will bleed the system. Don't forget to flush the system so there's only power steering fluid in it. That step was omitted in this video and the PS fluid is now contaminated with engine oil. That's why it's black.

Those o-rings sometimes get stuck inside the fuel rail when your'e taking them out. And yes the o rings have to be there. Put a bit of motor oil on the rings when you're installing them in the car, don't install the o-rings dry, they will likely leak.

Mine was low and making whining noise. I topped off with fluid, purged the air, but the noise persisted. There is definitely leakage from the bottle to pump gasket, but the fluid appears to be clean inside the bottle free of engine oil.
