Every Sunday at The Motorist Hub there is a cars and coffee meet. These events welcome all but will focus on a particular marque (or theme) each week. This week the spotlight was on a brand with a history in aviation, we will be taking a look at SAAB who were the other sensible Swedish brand for those who wanted something a little less conservative than a Volvo.
SAAB expanded into car manufacturing after WW2 due to a fall in demand for aircraft. The first cars had two stroke engines and required oil to be mixed with fuel, the driver also had to press the gas pedal going down hill in order to ensure oil was pumped around the engine so that it would not seize up. Very early cars had wheel arches that partially covered all four wheels and snow would pack inside resulting in a loss of steering capability. Things did improve though and the little front wheel drive cars became very capable rally cars in the hands of Erik Carlsson (who would later have a special edition model named after him).
The brand later went more upmarket with larger cars to compete with more prestigious offerings from Germany. Though the cars got bigger engines generally were of rather modest capacity for the segment thanks to the use of a Turbo charger, something that continued to be used in their cars for decades.
In the 1980's SAAB worked on a joint Project with Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo on what became the 9000 and in the 2000's some markets got Subaru derived models.
SAAB had its fair share of financial issues over the years, eventually being sold to GM who later axed the brand. Many later cars shared R&D with other GM vehicles.
As always there were lots of other vehicles to see and the classic car show room was also open and had a yellow SAAB 9-3 Convertible for sale.
I haven't featured every vehicle as the video would have ran on for hours but this should give you a good sense of how the event took place. I Was also in a bit of a rush due to other family commitments and without an assistant camera man so sadly will have missed some things out this time. I did get an interview with SAAB 90 owner Matt though in addition to seeing lots of cool, interesting SAAB's including a hot version of the early 9-3, The Viggen.
Any car info given is to the best of my knowledge but not knowing exactly which cars will be attending I cant always research each vehicle in detail before hand, therefore some information may not be 100% accurate. If you spot anything that is incorrect please leave a polite note in the comments.
I have a number of events scheduled throughout the year with more being added all the time. There will also be more car related DIY videos and hopefully some road trips too so make sure you not only subscribe, but also tap on the bell icon. this will ensure that you are notified each time a new video is released. Typically new videos are released on Tuesday evenings at 7pm but occasionally a video may be late or an additional video may be released on a different day.
Mark on Motoring can also be found on Facebook and twitter where additional photo content and channel news updates can be found.
