Archive footage of the South African Air Force and its military aircraft during the Angola Grens Oorlog / Border War 1966-1989. A Special thanks to the Swartkop Air Force Museum Pretoria. #militaryhistory #borderwar #airwarhistory
Those C130 pilots were something else, flying to Mavinga sometimes in zero visibility at less than 100m to avoid radar and then land on a cut out gravel runway in the middle of the jungle, lit by parafin lamps which were extinguished as the plane went by.
Spacedigger, CORRECTION! No, you have not been here, WE have. This is our language, our culture, and our people. We are not Dutch, we are Afrikaans. Our language may have most of it's roots in Dutch, but that is it! Afrikaans consists of Dutch, German, French, and some words taken from Portuguese, Bantu, and even Maylay. So, we are proud of who and what we are. WE ARE AS DUTCH, AS AMERICAN'S ARE ENGLISH!
We used to visit my Oupa in Pretoria and on the drive back to Witbank would stop for an hour or two and watch the craft take off from Swartkop...lots of activity in those days
This video brings back memories - these are the aircraft of my youth and childhood ! Of course, I remember a hilarious story from this period - the guys from Dassault came to see how the SAAF did things in the late 70's, and were astonished to see the way we loaded ammo, and even more astonished when they say how we would field-drop the Mirage III DEFA cannon by getting hold of three big guys, and lowering the hing into their waiting hands !
I guess im randomly asking but does someone know a method to log back into an Instagram account? I was stupid lost my login password. I love any tips you can offer me
@Sage Cade Thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
In the Battle of Bangui SANDF lost 14 men against 1000+ of the rebels. Well documented truth. As of today, the Rooivalk had been involved in two operations in the DRC with devastating success.
My fathers brother flew mig 21 in Angola, 2 mig 21's were lost to dogfight with mirage and a Cuban Mig 23 scored a partial score against a mirage later in the war. most aircrafts lost on both sides were either due to surface to air missiles or accidents, but, it was mostly a war fought on the groung. Later in the war the SAA lost superiority due to BVR capabilities of Mig 23 and arms embargo. RIP to all the deads.
SAA is the South African Airways. You actually mean SAAF. The lost of air superiority was due to inferior missiles against the better Russian weaponry. Later on S.A. developed the Cheetah who was more of a match for the Mig-23. Unfortunately the SAAF today is more air than force.
No it is not true that many F1's were shot down by the MIG23's. You can search the web for documented evidence and very few mirages were shot down. More MIGS hit the dust but in truth the air-to-air combat was little, and sorties were usually dominated by the SAAF.
Not a single Mirage was shot down by a MIG. Only one was hit, Piloted by Arthur Piercy, but made a emergency landing, at Ondangwa and overshot the runway, damaging the plane. Mirage F1's scored 2 confirmed kills (with gunsight evidence) and a probable in 1981 and 1982. Maj Johan Rankin was responsible for all 3
Lived there from 82 to 87, working for Barlow Rand......Very probably the best years of my life. So Sad to see what it has become. Literally brings tears to my eyes....What is it about them that nowhere in Africa can they Govern a Country Properly? Is the answer Tribalism?? God Bless South Africa
@@johnpringle5199 dick! What have the ANC done? Bancrupt the country! RHODESIA will never call it Zimbabwe! They're crying for the white farmers to come back! 😂 😂 😂 😂 Every black country in Africa is Bancrupt! Shiny things n fast cars fuck their own people 😂 😂 😂 😂
South Africa had its image, and that of Apartheid, tainted by biased media outlets. The media showed South Africa as a villain, when in reality, it used Apartheid to keep communism out of South Africa. I can see why Angola was such a threat as a neighbor. I also see the damage that was done to Rhodesia. Sadly, the biggest problem in Africa is the practice of Communal-ism from blacks on the African continent. South Africa was rightfully settled by the Boers and English as their country. liberals want to see things like that gone, so they can control those areas by dividing them. A very sad reality around the world, and we need to wake up to the reality that those in power could care less about anyone but themselves.
@pencilpauli I edited my original comment, out of respect, after doing research. I will say that the media certainly did not do anyone justice by only showing one side of the Apartheid issue. i do realize that it had to be done to keep Angolan communists at bay. Leave it to liberal media to only show one side of an issue to get people worked up emotionally. That's what those now in power want is to divide and conquer, so they can control people. I don't think that the Boer Dutch are socialist, but they may be on different terms with the English. I am actually saddened with what is going on in South Africa now. The blacks are doing what they are out of the concept of communal-ism. They expect you (whites to give what you have willingly, or they will take it by force. Do not give in to them.
I wonder what the new south africas airforce look like compare to the old South Africa? The police did not even had money for gas for the police vehicles!!
90% of all air planes have been sold off the cheetah and a lot of dc 3's sold off to Venezuela T6 havards and a lot of Impalas have been sold off to private sector. At the moment the South African museum has one more serviceable plane than the air force its self. All but one c130 Hercules are grounded, c160 Transall are all sold.We have 6 Grippens fighters and only four pilots , one serviceable c130 , a few dc3 and of cause the new planes bought under the new goverment ie augusta helicopters and hawks but a lot have been in accidents
@@hedgehogb769 funny 7 gripens were on air in the inuguration of the new president. Also 7 hawks were on air. Yet we have 4 pilots according to you.. maybe they were on auto pilot ne? Going spreading lies here. One c130? Really?
hedgehog b we have 26 Gripens(C and D variant) of which 13 are currently being flown, with them being rotated in and out of service. We have about 14 pilots for the gripens(if im not mistaken). We have a few hawks as well, and definitely more than one C130. You should maybe get your facts straight before trying to spread your opinions on the internet.
Cute... Angola and Cuba lost thousands more casualties than the SADF and it was never our main objective to take over Angola, just to halt the Communist uprising threatening Southern Africa there. So when peace talks were over Cuba had to withdraw as well failing in its objectives, whereas we have succeeded in ours.
@@eisbeinGermany It wasn't Apartheid that necictated the war. It was Communism who necicitated the war. Our war in Angola wasn't for Apartheid, it was against Communism. Just like America's war in Vietnam wasn't for Apartheid in America (they called it Segregration - the English meaning of Apartheid). Few people know that Apartheid was still practised in America in the 1960's.
I agree. "Res ipsa loquitur" (the facts speak). Look at this timeline and results: A. Cubans start withdrawing from Angola: 01 April 1989; B. Namibian Independence: 21 March 1990 - Namibia is a democracy, not a communist state; C. The collapse of the Soviet Union: 25 December 1991; D: White South Africans voted in a referendum for the dismantling of Apartheid - peacefully and at our leisure: 17 March 1992; E: On 27 April 1994 the ANC / SACP / COSATU alliance became the government of South Africa with Nelson Mandela as president ... a communist allience under a democratic constitution! Look at the time-line. Look at the logic! Use your common sense! We dictated the whole process. We won both the military and the political conflict.
Well they simply placed communists in politics and tricked the whole population,Mandela and De Klerk were traitors. We couldve saved billions simply taking out Jo Slovo,Kasrils De Klerk etc. In simple spy ops taking them out with poisons etc so no one knows.
Anyone in the SAAF who remembers a Captain, flying Canberras at the time by the name of Mazza, Dominico (Italian Heritage) and his Wife Louisa (Portugese heritage from Mozambique) ??
Afrikaans is the language. The people speaking it includes Afrikaners (meaning [white] Africans), Boers (literally "Farmers") and Cape Coloureds (mixed European and African blood). Afrikaans can be defined as a Dutch dialect.
scary how South Africa went from one of the best military forces in the world, almost untouchable to where they are now!!! They have ordered something like 20 eurofighters but dont even have pilots to fly them!!! So sad!
They ordered 26 Saab Grippens. Great planes but the Cheetah had a better radar and EW package with strong auto jamming. The guys at Denel were surprised that the cheetah could detect a grippen before the grippen detected the cheetah. We were told that the cheetahs were at the end of their life and not feasible however they ended up being sold to Ecuador or Chile with a 10 year maintenance contract extendable by another 10. 12 grippens are still flying and the rest have been mothballed. No money for fuel to keep the pilots hours up.
lol you pro apartheid inbreds really love stroking your guns. when has S ever had the best military in the world? you lost every single war you ever took part in
Disagree in the strongest possible terms. Suggest that you read up on the operation. It was an extremely well planned operation with the limited resources that they had available to them. Through skill emplacement of forces, they were able to repel a well armed force far greater than theirs. We lost 14, they lost a lot, lot more.
@@mandlamsimanga4879 When, more-or-less, shall South Africa be great again? I'm looking forward to that. In the meantime, it's a shithole ruined by Rampant Corruption.
Then they should say, white technology and enventions for whites only. Phones, Computers, Cars, Airplanes, Hospitals, Clothes, Shoes, Radio,Tv, Soccer, most foods, Petrol, Diesel and obviously corrigated iron plates and everything steel. Then I want to hear the Africans for Africans group start moaning.
Africa has forever been occupied by three races: Caucasians (whites) to the north, Kongoids (blacks) in the centre, Capoids (Bushmen / Khoisan) in the south. By the way, Afrikaans is the only language that carries the name of this continent, and Afrikaner is the only tribe that carries the name of this continent.
Race doesn't exist and you can't be racist if u accept that as I do. And since as u pointed out: Racist denunciation is my tradition, I guess I can never shut up than huh?!!!
And then in 1988 cuito cuanavale boom Angola, Namibia and South Africa are all free. Ten years later Fidel Castro came to visit freely. Now who was winner here? Cubans of course!
You fail to understand the difference between a political and military win. Also the reason the SADF was in Angola was to stop communism and the domino effect. They stopped the Cubans and Russians from crossing into SWA and SA. When the Soviet union started to fall then so did the Soviet support for the ANC SWAPO PLAN etc. With no communist threat there was no reason to have SWA as a buffer to the communist threat. The figures dont lie. Look at the number of casualties on each side and the numbers of equipment captured by each side. It was hundreds to one. similar to vietnam where the USA dominated the battlefield.
@@petero7937 no you guys were brainwashed, you were told we were coming to take you women and so forth, some of you were forced to go to fight te war you didn't want to do. Some people got raped and killed for refusing to go to war. What's that to you if you don't call it wickedness?
