Saanich landlord out $33,000 in unpaid rent, clean-up and repairs from tenant 

Tenant should be arrested for destruction of property, theft and squatting. Ridiculous.

How does this not fall under theft and fraud. Over 5000$

This is absolutley terrible. I had a similar situation helping my Father in-law. Tenants did not pay rent for 3 years, his property was absolutely destroyed, deemed a bio hazard site, while going through Residential Tenancy Branch hearings. and even at the end it still cost so much money to simply get them off the property. You have to pay for a Baliff and they will come and remove JUNK and charge the land lord. It's so gross that people like this can simply walk away and go on to the next rental. Those who have been evicted from houses should be put on a publicly viewable list in the least!

And now they are someone else's nightmare. They steal your money, wreck your house, and the cops can do nothing??? It's a shame.

That would be a frustrating, chaotic mess. I might strongly believe in tenants rights but tenents also have a responsibility to look after to keep the place clean and pay their rents and be respectful.

This is why I'd *never* rent out my house or a portion of it.

this is common. it happens all the time. this is simply one case that made it to the local media. the residential tenancy branch is set up to protect tenants not landlords. if they continue to do so there will be less and less landlords left. the RTA has the authority and the ability to handle this process better but won't because of it's current operational mandate. this is a provincial government problem they must implement change if they want to increase available housing.

I have two friends who rented properties. One sold his rental property after the first three tenants burned him, the other turned into a slum landlord after being burned a couple times. If you are lucky enough to get good tenants, treat them right.

This tenant should be charged for property damage, vandalism and theft. Tenant should be blacklisted. Who dare to rent out their properties. Poor landlord.

no wonder there is a rental shortage. people are opting out of the home rental business. back in the day, a group of men would show up, throw their crap outside and remove a few chicklets if need be and the cops would look the other way.

Having been a landlord (both residential and commercial ) for the past 50 years I personally have never had a really bad tenant. I have had a few difficult tenants that refused to leave or pay their rent but generally all my tenants have been really nice respectful people. In extreme cases like this, the Residential Tenancy Branch should be able to enforce their own eviction notice. Otherwise what is the use of the Residential Tenancy Branch rulings? Remember 66% of British Columbians rent. If the other 34% stop being landlords where are the tenants going to live? Think about that.

Serve eviction notice 10 days after late rent. Hire a bailiff.

the police ABSOLUTELY could have - AND SHOULD HAVE - gotten involved; As per the Criminal Code of Canada 430 (1) Every one commits mischief who willfully (a) destroys or damages property;

They need a bounty hunter type service to deal with this, with protections from the law.

It's almost like you should have a better judgement of character before accepting tenants.dont get me wrong, it was sh*tty of the tenant to do this, but come on, man. Sometimes judging the book by its cover can save you.
