Sabani - the small fishing boat that is the pride of Okinawa’s maritime culture. Its history started from dugout canoes. The technique of sabani-building and the shape of the boats differ subtly with the age or according to the sabani builder’s taste. But the sabani has always been loved by Okinawan fishermen who are after greater speed and toughness in their boats. Here we explore the history of sabani and what makes it so attractive.

Nice video! Rare to hear a well balanced overview of the history of Sabani (general enough to be accessible, detailed enough to be interesting). Was this originally made in English or is there a Japanese source video ?

Good explanation of the various types. Not much mention of the resurgence of these traditional vessels amongst local Okinawan enthusiasts. And when did the use of outriggers start? Have there been other rigs beside the Chinese junk rig? What about bamboo nails? How does the smaller Haari boat fit in with the Sabani? Just a few questions for expansion of the next video.

Some people started using outriggers for the Sabani Sailing Race which has started in 2000.
