The Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) was one of the longest and most destructive conflicts in European history, fought largely as a religious conflict between Protestants and Catholics in the Holy Roman Empire. The war, disease and famine brought death to about 8 million Europeans, in some parts of Southern Germany only one third of the population survived.
CAUTION!
I won't tolerate any racist, discriminatory or in any other form inappropriate comments! This song neither glorifies war, nor National Socialism, but should be considered as a historical work.
"No, we don't glorify anything, we just tell stories about things that have happened." (Rikard Sundén, founding member of Sabaton)
Please support Sabaton and purchase their current album Carolus Rex.
----------

Hmm the songs describes war true but to really feel the war you need to be there yourself. i see the sabatons songs as good memories of my fallen brothers in arms. Germans, Americans, Russians, French, Japanes. they all served there country. they all sufferd casulties. they all weept and bleed. no one is diffrent in war. Soldiers are Soldiers. countrys are countrys. they all fight because they think it is right for them. even if some people was driven by mad men to war.......

Joshua Powell Broken dreams so grand, sing of his final stand, long live Carolus Brought by soldiers hand, back to the fatherland, long live Carolus Rex I agree That's a pretty sad song, but nowhere near this level. The 30 years war, some casualties range the death toll up to 14 million which was something like 3% o fthe worlds population. The only thing that would even come close to this was ww1 some 400 years later which claimed 17 million lives and this lasted 30 years. and Germany was completely wrecked to the core, and it wouldn't be this badly destroyed again until ww2. The Swedish army alone destroyed 2000 castes, 18,000 villages and 1,500 towns in Germany, one-third of all German towns. and in the end, what did it achieve? Nothing! No one really won it. After immense suffering and loss, things were much the same at the end of the war as they had been at the beginning. It did establish that Protestantism would survive in Germany, and that Germany would not be pulled together as a single modern kingdom until the 19th century. As i said earlier, much like ww1 it served no real purpose, They could have ended as a small brawl between two small nations but thanks to foreign interventions broke out to be the biggest conflict the world had ever seen. In ww1 Austria had even made it clear that they were not after lands in all of this, and just wanted to punish Serbia for assassinating their emperor, they wanted to take the Capital, call it a victory and march home, Germany, Russia and Britain made it into a world war. world war two is not nearly as sad in my opinion that served a fundamental purpose as too stop the spread of fascism and Germany's expansions.

Sabaton has made a few songs with the anti war sentiment like Price of a Mile. But this one encapsulates not just the horror of war, but the sheer weight of war and the fallout of such violence. This song may highlight the European Thirty Years War, but it can apply to any war with its message of the true damage. My favorite part of the song is towards the end when the different voices speak, “When they face death they’re all alike. No right or wrong, rich or poor, no matter who they served before. Good or bad, they’re all the same. Rest side by side now...” This truly exemplary of the human aspect of war. No matter how far we advance, so long as people end up dead, wars will always be fought by people... on both sides...

When i hear refrain i literally see this: Swedish soldiers slowly come from the mist, wounded, with stripped clothes and broken armor. They barely walk, making step by step. There are only few of them, and they are walking straight to rising sun. Mist starts to blow away, uncovering a trail of blood and death, fallen Swedes and their enemies, resting side by side. Few remaining soldiers stand in sunlight, looking up at the sun, covering their eyes. Ahead of them stay their foes, exually tired and decimated. two groups walk to each other and soldiers of both sides drop their guns, hug each other, crying. They sit in the grass, mourning their fallen comrades and looking around thinking "who could let this happen?" Sorry i had to write this.

I remember in 2020 one of my friends recommended me this song. My mom was in the hospital doing her 2nd open heart surgery, after years of suffering and disability due to the first surgery being failed, held at a hospital belonging to an Islamist militia that we're forced to live under & the incompetent nepotist "doctors" they hire. It riled me up emotionally at the time, made me cry & inspired a lot of anger, knowing how risky her 2nd surgery would be. Years later in spring 2024, my mom finally found a better doctor, a much better hospital. She died under her 4th open heart surgery. I'm reminded of this song for the first time in years. I just feel lost. No more tears, anger, none. I'm just more lost and scared than ever.

everytime i hear this song i get a ball in the pit of my stomach. because i know this is our future. we never learn. we just kill and kill, for religion, for freedom, for resources, for revenge, for differing political views, for being different colors. we look for a reason to do it because thats what humans do. and it sucks cause it will never end until there are so few left that we can no longer survive
@Foxrich99

It will end when one "race" has taken over the world. (or when everyone is dead)

Human's are violent. It's our nature. But we're also survivors. Don't worry, we'll never kill ourselves out, our wars will just get smaller when the cleanse of atomic hellfire kills billions.

This song truly hits home for me, and gets me teared up every time. I've been at war with myself for 30 years, and I am beyond the point of insanity. I try going 1 day at a time, but the battle within myself is driving those I love away. Finding peace through this battle seems impossible

This song, with the Swedish version too, ALWAYS makes me cry so much! I have no idea why, but both songs makes my eyes fill with tears like Niagara Falls! No any other song from Sabaton makes me even sad, but this... It touches something deep inside me so strongly every time I hear this. Note that I am NOT a history person so I have no clue about the wars etc.

The emotion in this song is way too much, and the wording give it a tone of hopelessness that might make me want to cry as well. The part "When all of Europe's burning, what can be done? They've been to war a decade; two more to come" almost broke me. It's just a bit too much.

Humanity as a species has never known peace. In fact, nothing in the world has known peace, except plants and other nonsentient life, simply because they are nonsentient.
@noaha.b.8197
@noaha.b.8197 6 лет назад
deffdefying not even plants. Every living being is a product of the endless war named evolution and every single living being fights for survival on a daily basis. Btw plants are not that stupid. They can call in allies, know how to warn other members of their species and they can even evolve tactics how to use their nature given weapons in the most effective way individuelly.
@deffdefying4803
@deffdefying4803 6 лет назад
I meant in relation to sentient animals and especially humans. When we say "peace" we mean no blood being spilled for the sake of spilling blood, and we can just live our lives. However, as you suggest, there is always that constant selection pressure on every living thing, so "peace" isn't really "peace" until we're dead
