I’ve seen so many people react to this but not understand the implications. But as I watch genuine tears fall from your face the longer this song goes on, I know that you understand this song to it’s truest form. To this I know you respect the story. To this we honor the service of people across time and nationalities, the backstories are all different, but the story is the same.

I've got to see the next Sabaton concert in Sweden, when they play in the big arenas again. Oslo was great too, but I missed this! 😏 I do have a ticket to their Swedish tour, but it's not in the big arenas this time. It would probably be awesome anyway, like every Sabaton show.

This song is about the Thirty Years' War that dominated central Europe in the 17th century (1618-1648). To this day it is one of the longest and bloodiest wars in history, with the death toll falling between 4 million and 8 million. Many of the fatalities were not even from active warfare, but famine and disease also plagued the area, upping the casualties that much more. Casualties reached such a high number that many Swedish men were forced to fight when they had barely reached manhood, and sometimes even before then. Which really makes the title of the song ("A Lifetime of War" in English) hit a little harder. Men basically spent their entire lives at war, no chance for a peaceful life. The was about the battle between Catholics and Protestants, and some point during the war almost every major player/Country in Europe was a part of it. This Swedish version of the song tells the story from a Swedish soldier's point of view. You should also check out the English version; it is not a direct translation from the Swedish, but it rather tells the story of the war from the perspective of the outside people, those not involved directly in the war but were affected by it
@Davidkiser13
@Davidkiser13 3 года назад
Your exactly 100% right and the war started because Spain was forcing Catholicism on its people. And during a meeting with Spain and Belgium at the Prague castle turned deadly when the 2nd defenestration (of Europe) which means to through the Catholics out the window of the 11 th story of the castle (Prague castle).

The swedish version is better than the english one. The english one is about the 30 years war in general, but this one is more personal
@rodinclaus9380
@rodinclaus9380 3 года назад
The English version is about the event of course, but the Swedish version being about a soldier is much, much more personal. I'd even go so far as to say that other than the line about fighting for Sweden specifically, it transcends any kind of boundaries and simply becomes an anthem for any and all soldiers across history. Men who historically rose up at the call of the fatherland and simply vanished from the pages of history. Men who left a merger few to mourn them and pass on their stories, lest they be forgotten forever. Men who don't even have the luxury to know if what they're fighting for is just, or if their sacrifices actually made a difference. That is what it means to have a Lifetime of War - however short your lifetime ends up being.

One line that really strikes me is "Där ute väntar döden, inte hjältemod" (There is death waiting out there, not heroism). Loved your reaction, and I glad you listened to the swedish version. It is so much more personal and emotional then the english version. As an american, I would suggest "To hell and back", "82nd all the way" and Devil Dogs. They are about two american heroes (Audie Murphy and Alvin York) and the US Marines.

I cried almost entirety of song. No matter which country you belong, whatever your backstory is, there is one story that is same for everyone touched by war, death, loss, either that been loss of your home, your family member... doesn't matter, it is sadness, guilt (that you couldnt do anything). Saying "i hope we never exerience war" would be naive since humanity will never be at peace. Even now world is on the balance with all shit that is happening in the world. My naive wish and dream is peaceful world free from war, free from sadness and pain that war brings. But that is only a dream. One can hope but it is everyone that need to make it happen. Sabaton is the greatest band ever, the only that sings about war, and all of what cames with it. I never bow to anyone but i bow to Sabaton, I have such respect for this guys they earn it.

I was not at this particular concert, but I have seen Sabaton live 9 times and at 7 of those they performed this song in swedish and the atmosphere in the crowd was incredible, specially at the parts where the band stopped playing and just let the crowd pretty much take over, there's nothing like it, at least nothing that I have experienced in my 30+ years. I was one of the many men, women and children who sang along to my dear Sweden's wonderful band Sabaton that day. TODAY when I watch this video over and over it is incredibly emotional. My father fought for freedom in Iraq, Bosnia, etc., and grandfather World War II, who fought voluntarily for freedom in other countries all over the world. I made the same decision and did military service for a time and now as a 46 year ex soldier I do not hesitate to protect our planet from the men of evil. This song is multinational, all countries in this world can recognize themselves from their countries history Continue with your reactions // Hugs from Sweden

I get a feeling about this song, that it can be viewed from a soldiers point of view, a soldier who asks himself "who am i fighting for so far away?", you fight for your land 100 miles away, the soldier asks himself.

someone else put it into words pretty well: the english version of the album is from the perspective on an outsider looking in, while the swedish version is from the perspective of those that were there
@isak2209
@isak2209 Год назад
That is precisely correct. It is, rather than glorifying war, condemning it completely. No man, no woman, no person at all wants to go to war. No one wants to see their family and friends leave to perhaps never come back. And it's all because of the decisions of people you'll never meet and who will never know your name. War is one of the worst things humans have ever done and continue to do, and it should always be portrayed in this type of way.

And I enjoyed being able to share this amazing song with you through your reaction. :) I wasn't at this specific concert but I was at a concert sometime after the release of the Carolus Rex album and when they played this song, the whole audience joined in and we sang the whole first verse as well. In this video when Sabaton play the song i feel that Joakim (the singer) do his best to come on those dead soldiers's place who died and forgotted by history (if this is what song talks about)... but when you hear the lyrics multiplied by hundreds (how big the crowd is?) you feel more than respect from the crowd to those dead soldiers. You feel that the crowd transforms the song into some kind of hymn and then the crowd transforms its self into those dead soldiers. You hear and feel the voices of those dead soldiers like the crowd was a cemetery and the dead who resurrected are those dead soldiers. I think i couldn't comment in other words.

Nice and emotional reaction, the song is about the so called 30year war 1618-1648 but the lyrics sadly applies even today. Haven't followed your reactions so I don't know which Sabaton songs you already dug into but for live audiance check out live videos from Woodstock (Poland) around 550.000 in the audiance. For songs closer to home (US) check Devil Dogs or 82nd all way. Also if noone has mentioned, Sabaton has a history channel here on RU-vid, check it out if you want the history behind their songs. Cheers from Sweden

Just found your Chanel and you felt this song for what it is and that is beautiful and truthful. Sabaton is a great band that really tells history and emotions and lots of recruits and soldiers listen to this band 🙏🏼💙🇸🇪
