The Swiss guards in service were 189, only 42 survived
@thatguyinelnorte
@thatguyinelnorte 10 месяцев назад
Those who died were the rear guard, the "forlorn hope" as it were. The 42 were the Pope's escort through the secret ways to Castel Sant'Angelo. They were all so brave!!!
@MobilesuitBigO

The pope was one evil sob. They lost count of the "heretics" he put to the flame. It's a shame he got away, my ancestors were very close to ending that corruption... They failed and now look at, a den of sin and lies. If there was ever a false shepherd it's the pope. And Mohammed but I fail to see much difference.
@solarissv777

@@thatguyinelnorteI wonder if the "secret way" is a fortress wall that goes from somewhere near saint Peter's basilica to one of the Castle di Saint Angelo gates?

@@solarissv777 That's a really good guess. It is a wall that was built for fortification purposes, but it's not part of a larger fortification itself. The "passage" is just the walk along the top of the wall, which stretches from the Vatican to the Castel Sant'Angelo. Amazingly, there are still marks visible in the wall from that battle in 1527. Mostly small holes from crossbow shots fired up at the fleeing pope and his Swiss escort.

The Swiss Guard were of the elite Swiss Pikemen hailing from the predominantly Catholic Area of Switzerland’s independent states, and loyal to the pope. Every country in Europe knew of their training and elite fighting prowess, the Papacy employed them under what was considered quite substantial pay for a mercenary defense force. But it was not their high pay that made them loyal; they were, again, fiercer religious and loyal to the Holy See. Only the best of the best could serve in the Swiss Guard. This, The Stand of the Swiss Guards, goes down in history as one among the most heroic last stands of any military, religious or not. May their memories be eternal.

Yes and they still are. Before them was the Knights Templar. But because of outside business dealings the Knights where disbanded and their leaders executed for various things. Mostly charges that were complete bs. Greed is a dangerous enemy. And creates dangerous enemies. So they were replaced by the Swiss Guard. Where members of the original Swiss Guard formerly templars or their descendents perhaps but manly because many members of the Knights Templars had families before joining the order. So yeah the Swiss Guard remain as loyal to the Pope as the Knights Templar was before them. The Templars started being a order under the Pope in 1119 AD their service officially ended on 22 March 1312. The Swiss Guard was officially established in 1506. In the intermediate period the city guard of Roma actually did the job unsurprisingly. The pope decided he rather have his own guards again. The templars were well in other Christian orders at that point the majory in Portugal as the Military Order of Christ. Where they still exist today. But obviously bringing back the Templars would be a political issue to say the least so the Swiss Guard being equally skilled got the job. And have been doing an excellent job of guarding his holiness every since.

@@John2r1 The Swiss Guard got the Job primarily because of St Jakob on Birs (26.08.1444). When the Swiss wrestled Control of Zürich from the Habsburg superpower, the Habsburgs called in the French Superpower. The French King had a considerable Force of about 25k professional mercenaries. The entered confederate territory near Basel. The swiss send 1.3k green troops to keep a eye on this army. those easily defeated the french vanguard. got carried away a bit, crossed the river Birs and challenged the french main army in open battle. The did successfully battle the superior force, inflicting more casualties on them than taking. but eventually exhaustion forced them to retreat to the monastery of st jakob. There French guns and eventually a storm assault lead to their annihilation (they refused to surrender). The Bishop of Bale (neutral at the time, mainly responsible for the peace deal that followed), recommended to the pope to create the swiss guard. Oh, the French decided they didn't want to find out what facing about 25k of swiss troops sieging Zürich would be like and immediately withdrew from the war. At rome it wouldn't have really mattered if they surrendered. it was a mob not army, it would have been unlikely, that they would have been taken prisoner. Never Break and Fight till death, was the main reason, everyone hired swiss mercs at the time.
@John2r1
@John2r1 Год назад
@@beyondEV Yes following the collapse of the Knights Templar the Swiss Guard really stepped up. Some of them may have been former Knights Templar. But that's called passing down knowledge to a new generation. It's like passing the torch. Which is also why even today IF the Swiss Guard ever got into a situation where they needed more manpower every single organization that are directly linked to the Knights Templar would come to their aid. Picking a fight with the Swiss Guard even if your forces outnumber them is a suicidal choice. The Swiss are also the only army we know of to go to war and come back with more troops than they left with. So yeah I respect the Swiss Guard for filling the boots of the Knights Templar in their duty to the faith.

The Swiss guard also made a stand against Napoleon Bonaparte when he seized Rome. They fought so hard and viciously that a treaty was made to guarantee the sovereignty of the Vatican as long as the pope didn’t maintain more than a couple hundred Swiss guardsmen. And during the German occupation of Italy. Only a white line and the Swiss guard plus some very clever priests kept the SS at bay.

@kettch777

For those who don't know the story....In 1527, a leaderless force of nearly 1,000 men, former mercenaries who had followed the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, descended upon Rome after mutinying against orders to turn back after Charles V had attempted to put pressure on the Pope with the threat of military action. They decided instead that Rome was ripe for plundering. In their way stood nothing but the 189 men of the recently formed Swiss Guard. While 42 of them escorted the Pope to the fortress of Castel San Angelo, the remaining 147 stood their ground and died to a man buying time for the Pope to escape. The Pope and the remaining Guardsmen held out for several months but were eventually forced to surrender. The Swiss Guard was disbanded as part of the Pope's surrender terms, but was reformed at a later date. To this day, the Guard's formal uniforms are the everyday uniforms worn by that first group of Guardsmen back in 1527, in memory of their heroic last stand.

Their dedication is amazing. And the halberds and pikes. They actually know how to use them. And the 'dress swords', on many military uniforms. Not dress. Every weapon they have is really a weapon. And they're trained in multiple martial arts. It's almost like the Pope's guards are good at it.

They still rock the ceremonial stuff because there's a legacy to honor there, but he said once they entered the catacombs, it was all black suits, Uzi submachine guns and an air of f*ck around and find out. I must disagree, some hold to it and have payed a large price but those that do hold to HONOUR and whats correct would do it again, even knowing what will happen.

I understand why people associated this with crusade, yet i also understand that song is 1 not about them 2 its about chad elite soldiers not about some crusades where most warriors were expendable footmans because knights alone would never make enough mans

Thank you for posting this. I was going to show my class the one with crusaders, but I didn't feel comfortable with that historically inaccurate imagery.

I know that this is about the defense of Rome, but it also fits really well for the crusades, except for the whole “It was 1527” part

Swiss guard where profesional soldiers and are still on par with most countries Special forces. I would put then currently on level of SAS . Definetly not something i would ever want to mess with. Their uniforms , well , even Rafael said it wasnt his best work.

The Swiss Guard: "Sabaton. His Holiness has chosen you for a most righteous task that only you can fulfill." Sabaton: "Sup?" The Swiss Guard: "You must write an anthem for the Swiss Guard. Can you do it?" Sabaton: "Sounds easy enough. How awesome would you like it to be?" The Swiss Guard: "What is the maximum?" Sabaton: "IN THE NAME OF GOD!!!" The Swiss Guard: "Yes." Sabaton: "THY WILL BE DONE!!!"
