~Battle of Lützen 1632~
On a field outside the small German town of Lützen, a King became lost in a mixture of fog and black gunpowder smoke. He was a product of his time, he was a warrior and he held a significant amount of personal courage. It was not the first time he had charged the enemy with weapons in his hands, it was the early 1600's and his name was Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden.
He got lost in the deafening mess that was created when the Swedish and Imperial armies crashed together like rhinos. He was not completely alone though. With him rode the chamberlain Creilsheim, the servants Truchsess and von Schulenberg, the 18-year-old boy named Leubelfing and the Kings lifeguards Anders Jönsson and Erland Lindelöf.
Suddenly, they get surrounded by heavily armoured German cuirassiers with pistols. A bullet hits the King above the left elbow and crushes the bone. Streiff, his horse, gets scared and difficult to control. Gustavus grasps the reins with his right hand and tries to get control over Streiff but then loses his sword. A shot goes off and hits the King in the back under the right scapula. After a previous gunshot wound at the Battle of Dirschau the King can no longer wear armor. He therefore wear a sort of leather jacket made of elk skin instead, but it cannot stop the bullet. It punctures his right lung. The King is now badly wounded and collapses in his saddle.
Many of the King's entourage have either fled or been killed. The lifeguard Anders Jönsson tries to support the wounded King and protect him from the stabbing cuirassiers. He fights desperately and valiantly against greater odds, but is ultimately cut down. Erland Lindelöf takes a shot in the neck and falls off his horse, and with this, the King immediately falls to the ground and remains lying. Streiff finds his way back to the army with empty and bloody saddle. The young servant Leubelfing is now the only one left, and he is trying to help Gustavus up on his own horse to save him, but it is difficult and he is heavy. The King has probably lost consciousness by now.
Leubelfing is cut down, seriously wounded, but he survives to later be able to tell what happened. Imperial riders, who certainly do not understand who it is they have found, shoot the King through the head at close range. Gustavus had been worth more alive than dead to them. But this is how King Gustavus Adolphus face his death on the battlefield, and the time is shortly before 13:00 on the day. It is a merciless and brutal affair.
When the King's body later was taken care of, wearing only a bloody white shirt, the pharmacist who embalmed Gustavus could count to five gunshot wounds, three stab wounds and a crushed bone in the left upper arm.
His leather jacket with the bullet hole can today be seen, along with his horse Streiff, in a museum at the Royal Armoury in Stockholm, Sweden. It is the best preserved and oldest stuffed horse in the world.

Just for people to know: Hakkapeliittas were light cavalry. The army was made 50/50 swedes/finns. Most Finns were infantry. No songs about them. All still considered themselves as Subjects of the king. Heavy cavalry were all swedes. Both were as kings men should. Allthough the courage of the finnish cavalry is legendary in the finnish military tradition. The tradition does not say that the swedes were worse though. Only that the Hakkapeliittas were exceptionally brave and effective against the enemy.

Some parts of the video are not Swedish armed forces but Spanish and french Fighting against each other in the Battle of Rocroi in 1643 (The film itself is called Alatriste). That Battle marked the end of Spanish hegemony in the Battlefield with their military formation Known as Tercio (Third) or also Spanish square. This formation was based on a Square of Swiis pikes with acabusiers and musketiers in its front and edges that gave the Spaniards the upper hand in most of the battles in Europe until the mid 17nth century when the armies of europe statted to adopt more linear formations based on the Dutch improvements with Maurice of Nassau during the 80 year wars (Battle of Nieuwpoort). The swedes would kind of Copy that and improve it during the 30 years wars and Marked an incredibly revolution of Warfare and the effectivness of the Swedish Infantry was seen in Lützow and Bretenfeld defeating 2 imperial armies that still used the Tercio formation but later, they were soundly defeated by the Spaniards in 1634 in the first Battle of Nördlingen, but after that, as I said, linear formation started to be more used and in the end, not even the Spanish could defeat as they did in earlier times, armies fielding theese improvements in the mid-late of the 17nth century.

Some of the other scenes were from movies set during another conflict that happened around the same time; the English Civil War. There are scenes from "To Kill a King" at 1:07, and in 1:15 the guy that looks like Gustavus Adolphus is really Oliver Cromwell played by Tim Roth. The single shots at 3:52 and 4:15 as well as most of 4:40 to 5:15 (minus the shots of the guy riding helmetless into battle) are from the film "Cromwell" and the guy on the right at 4:44 is Richad Harris' (far superior) Oliver Cromwell.

30 years war was exceptionally brutal for several reason. First, religious contest which turned it into a quasi civil war between neighbours. Second, control of German Empire triggered involvement of all major nations (Austria, Denmark, Sweden, France, Spain), so that the war lasted 30 years despite many major battles occurred early (much like today Middle East conflict). Third, Wallenstein invented "cheap mass army". Instead of paying a limited number of highly trained soldiers or mercenaries, he recruited crowds of unskilled men, who learned the trade on the field, and paid them nearly nothing, pillage being the best part of their income, making more men available for war. Loss for Germany was between the third and half the population, and disappearance as a major power for two centuries.

It takes a while for the army to understand what is happening. You have to remember how little oversight the individual has in these battles. The individual soldier must learn that to retreat is to die. Most casualties are inflicted on routing units. You need to train or beat people to stay in cohesion, or shoot them if needed.

It was the common thing at that time that the ruler leads the army, and quite a few kings and princes actually enjoyed it and became really good commanders and tacticians. It was also common practice that kings, princes and high nobility sent their sons at the age of about 14-17 with the army to learn how to command it, to learn tactics, leadership and get used to war. For secular education sons of kings and nobility were sent on journey through Europe, to different courts and universities, for warrior skills they were sent to battle, that was the Man of Renaissance. Educated in every possible way of the time.

Interesting to note that analysis of skeletons on the battlefield reveal that the men were starving and emaciated. Also, there were not so many Swedes in the battle. Even on the Swedish side, most were from various parts of Germany. Adolphus planned the campaign in Germany for many years before his troops arrived in Pomerania. It was never the main consideration that he was fighting for Protestantism or that he was protecting Sweden proper from invasion. He fought for his empire, the loot and riches Sweden could acquire, and the fame it would bring him. He also had a well trained army, and he wished to make use of it. Much like Frederick of Prussia did later on.
@nancyjanzen5676

Nobody was actually fighting for religions. The Catholic French attacked the Catholic Hapsburgs because that is what the French always do. The Dutch took the chance while everybody was attacking each other to revolt from Spain blocked from moving troops by France. The Northern Protestant German states attacked the southern Catholic German states for reasons of power more than religion. And after the first truce the German princes switched sides and went at it again. Wars are always about power or turf hidden behind noble but fake causes. Historians call the thirty years war the world war before the first world war. It destroyed European alliances and Europe has never really been strong again.

@Alex-yz6uq
@Alex-yz6uq 5 лет назад
True
@LukeVilent
@LukeVilent 5 лет назад
First thing to come to mind is that even if he did, even if he captured Vienna and the emperor himself, even if the emperor officially resigned in favour of Gustavus Adolphus, there would instantly appear a Catholic anti-Emperor, and the war would have gone on, just the theaters of war would have shifted. And even Gustavus he won, there were high chances that he or his immediate successors wouldn't have been in a position to keep a personal union of Sweden with the Empire: and even if they did, it would have more likely be like Great Britain and Hanover under the Georgian rule.
@Robbini0
@Robbini0 5 лет назад
That would depend on how the new regions would be managed. If they would willingly fall under the new rule, and the swedes would implement the same systems they had in Swedish territories, they would be able to sustain themselves in war for a longer time, but sooner or later a coalition or alliance would form against Sweden, either to reclaim the HRE throne for catholicism, to claim other regions that they have claims on or just because Sweden would be powerful enough to beat any of them on their own. So sooner or later, there would be another massive war in Europe, the only question is who would win and what territories would change ruler. If Sweden would win, they would probably get some more regions under their control, but if they lost horribly they would probably lose much of HRE, Finland or Baltikum , depending on where Russia would invade and how well they would fare.
@SusCalvin
@SusCalvin 4 года назад
Sweden kind of gets what it wants. The field army is still there without the monarch. The ambition of the Adolphus still comes true, a stronger Swedish hold on the Baltic Sea. Think of the powers of Europe as a balance. When someone gets a bit too big, the others form a coalition to them them down a peg. Charles XII fights a coalition of neighbouring nations. Sweden joins the coalition against Napoleon when the time comes.
@SusCalvin
@SusCalvin 4 года назад
@@Robbini0 Personally, I think the Adolphus had his ambition fulfilled. A stronger hold on the Baltic Sea, land in modern-day Poland, the Baltic states and northern Germany. The field army of Sweden isn't sustaining itself at this point. People like the French are lending money to keep it going. Sweden is bleeding men and gold in the war just like anyone else.
