My EP&SW HO model railroad depicts New Mexico in the ealy 20th century. As part of it's history it built the Alamogordo and Sacramento Mountain railroad that climbed into the clouded heavens reaching the timber country of Cloudcroft. Switchbacks were required to avoid the steepest of grades and tight curves. With winding trestles this may have been the most spectacular railroad ever built in America. Still, the little impossible railroad operated from 1900 to 1943

I lived in Alamogordo when I was stationed at Holloman Air Force Base and we often rode our bicycles up to Cloudcroft then on through the Mescalero Apache reservation and back down to the Mesa returning via La Luz. I organized bicycle races at Sunspot and inside the foothills of Alamogordo up to the science center. As a former model railroader I really appreciated your dioramas and of the hard work you have done building this fantastic historical triumph

Although I attended NMSU, my longest bike trip traversed Cape Cod to Provinctown RI. Although, I would have enjoyed your bike trip as well

My Great Grandfather was an engineer on this railroad in 1901. I have been told he was the first engineer to go across the famous s bridge. He later went on to patent the electric means control for air brakes in 1935. I have original time tables, the patent and pictures, I am about to tr;y and model this railroad and want to include the s bridge. I would appreciate any help I can get in developing a good HO track layout. Thank you

Michael, Have you started your layout? I have been designing and purchasing materials for an HO layout of the Cloudcroft area which will include the S Bridge. Months of research... The layout will be featured in the Cloudcroft museum.

I buy a book title the Cloud-Climbing Railroad about Alamogordo and Sacramento Mountain railroad writing by Dorothy Jensen Neal printed 9-1970. I got it at use book store for a dollar..interest history.
