For some, movie theaters are like going to church. The movie palace, the local drive-in, even the multiplex is their cathedral. Most grand theaters from the past no longer exist for one reason or another. Neglect, changing times, changing technology, operation costs, even politics. Sacramento at one time was rich with beautiful and unique theaters (and some ugly ones too) as well as multiple drive-ins. Of all the places you will see in this film, only three still survive and operate today.
In this collection of clips from the KCRA-TV and KOVR-TV collections, we see The Tower, The Alhambra, The Fox Senator, The Alameda, Capitol Theater, Starlight Drive-In, Sacramento 6 Drive-In, the Century 21 & 22 "Dome" theaters during the opening week of "Star Wars" in 1977, and The Crest featuring a Movietone news reel of opening night on October 6, 1949, with Gov. Earl Warren and stars from that evening's film "That Midnight Kiss" in attendance.

I was six when "Star Wars" opened there. I was there. Lines were long. My mom and aunt brought a cool chest. I was vaguely embarrassed, but now I think, how cool!

No 49er! Bogus! Loved it regardless. Nostalgia in waves here.

Don't give up hope, John. We've only scratched the surface. As we start the process of digitizing the entire film archive I have no doubt I'll be making a sequel to this reel. THANK YOU for watching! - Chad Williams. Film and Video Specialist and Producer for the Center for Sacramento History.

Thank you for posting this. I saw my first rock concert at the Crest and my parents took me to every drive in in Sac in the 1980’s best times ever.
