Sacraments 201: Eucharist (what we believe)

BustedHalo.com's introduction to the Sacraments series continues as Fr. Steven Bell, CSP, answers more questions about what Catholics believe about the Eucharist and receiving Communion: How does the bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ? Is Communion a reenactment of the last supper? Should you not receive Communion if you have sinned? Why can't non-Catholics receive Communion in the Church?
These questions and more are answered in this edition of "Sacraments 201," a web video series geared for those who'd like an introduction or refresher course on these important, tangible Catholic experiences of God.

Clear, accurate explanation of many things, especially substance and accidentals. The fatherhood analogy is perfect here. Well done, Fr. Steve.

@rigobatiancila5824 3 года назад
@Underdog RCC is not a cult first of all and the RCC does not approve or stand for rapists. Also when Jesus said this is my blood and body it was literal. Please explain why many of his followers left at that teaching? Please explain why the Pharisees were so shocked at these words! The beginning of your "argument" was refutable but then second half is just a logical fallacy. Ad hominem except applied to a group/religion rather than a single individual. Citing the wrong doings of the Catholics does not prove that Catholic teachings are false especially since those wrong doings were never approved of

Fr. Steve: St. Austin's and UT's UCC in Austin sure sacrificed in sharing your presence with the larger Church. While I enjoy you on the radio show, your video work really allows your communication gifts to be fully expressed and I have to imagine are a great help to the Busted Halo mission. Still we miss having Fr. Steve live and in person in Austin.

I came across this video linked on a church website. I am frankly shocked at the inaccuracies. at 0:54 the priest says "We believe that in God's response to our prayers during Mass, the substance of the bread and wine changes." No, Father, it's in response to *your* prayers as the priest, not to "our" prayers. That is a fundamental Catholic concept, it's why we have priests. Then at 1:01, in discussing "transubstantiation", he says the bread and wine "at the most fundamental level, at their essence, they have become the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ". No, they change in their substance, not their essence. That's the word you are describing, "transubstantiation". In theology there is a big difference. And then the example of a regular guy becoming a father "in essence"- What does that have to do with the changing of the bread and wine? That is a completely different concept. "And now that he is a father, he will always be a father." What? You're talking about bread and wine, not a relationship between a father and child. This video takes a difficult subject and makes it incomprehensible.

Why would the Eucharist be made with unleavened bread if Jesus is risen? ;3
@gmamara
@gmamara 9 лет назад
Because the bread of the Jewish celebration of Passover, used at the Last Supper, was unleavened; although, leavened bread is permitted and used in Eastern Catholic Churches and Eastern Orthodox Churches. Unleavened bread is the only kind permitted in the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church.

It is information like this that convinces me more than ever that the Catholic Church is not the form of Christianity I choose to observe. The Church is filled with centuries of actions and "doctrine" that are thinly-veiled attempts at power and wealth consolidation in the hands of the priesthood. Virtually none of what Bell said is supported by the words of the Bible that the Catholic Church itself has worked to disseminate over the centuries. I can only believe that Jesus would be appalled by the actions of the Church that purports to spread His gospel to the world.

Is it really a fair thing to do to go to a non Catholic church and receive holy communion then when a non Catholic goes to a Catholic church they have to go up for a blessing. The Catholic should abstain from receiving the species at a non catholic church or the Anglican \baptist\Methodist on conformist should be able to receive the sacrament.

Jesus said do this in remembrance of me...Also to Him sin is sin there is not different degrees "You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY'; 28but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart." It begins in the heart. Mortal sin and venial sin? where is that in the Bible? Communion does reconciles us with God because it is finished He wants us to remember that the reason we are clean is because of what He did not some religious steps! So how about the thief on the cross? Where is he at?
@thoughtadventure100
@thoughtadventure100 10 лет назад
"remembrance" is a stronger word in Hebrew thought. Think of "and the Lord remembered Noah" "He has remembered His promise of mercy." It speaks of a past truth becoming present and effective. Degrees of sin? I John 5:17 "All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that is not deadly." Besides, no one has ever shown me in the Bible where it says all truth is to be found in the Bible.

On the night he was betrayed, Jesus took bread, blessed bread, broke bread, and handed out bread and said *"this is My Body."* Throughout the history of Christianity, Heretics have always maintained Jesus meant *"This is NOT My Body."* At the Bread of Life Discourse, Jesus tells the disciples about the BREAD of LIFE and it was rejected by the very first Protestants in John 6:66. At the Last Supper Jesus distinguishes between the Bread that is His Body from the bread that is not His Body. Jesus gives ordinary unblessed and unconsecrated bread to one who should have left with the other disciples in John 6:66. By the very hand of Christ Jesus, Judas is given that ordinary bread which, by the very Red Letter Words, He says to the Apostles, and to us: 26 Jesus answered, *“It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.”* Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. That is ordinary bread which is a reminder that even at the Institution of the Holy Eucharist there was treachery at the Lords table when you do not discern the Body and Blood of Christ in a worthy manner, they will eat and drink judgment on themselves. .

@xceptamanbbornagainnokingd5836
1:02, pause it there. the imagery there begs to differ heavily what is that you ask? sun worship, baal worship, catholicsm is pagan to a capital P. it just has christians names. and notice how you're suppose to pray for all these different saints, how in the greek satanic cults, you pray to different gods you're being deceived, and out of love i want you to know this that you may turn to the truth ps cannibalism is condemned before, during and after the law. when the real Jesus spoke about the communion, he meant symbolically, verses after he said that his flesh is meat indeed and his blood is drink indeed and they who eat and drink of it, etc, he says the body profits nothing, it's the spirit that quickeneth (you'll see that in verse 63 of John 6) roman catholicsm is the mother of harlots

XceptAManBbornAgain NoKingdomOfGod In John 6, 4 “The Jewish feast of Passover was near. “ we are told that the Jewish feast is here, but why is this here? It is here because it’s important. The a very important day of the Jews. Jesus promised something that is completed at that day. In John 6, 16 16 “When it was evening, his disciples went down to the sea, 17 embarked in a boat, and went across the sea to Capernaum. It had already grown dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 The sea was stirred up because a strong wind was blowing. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea* and coming near the boat, and they began to be afraid.k 20 But he said to them, “It is I.* Do not be afraid.” 21 They wanted to take him into the boat, but the boat immediately arrived at the shore to which they were heading.” they were going looking for Jesus and they made it but let’s see what the others did 22 * “The next day, the crowd that remained across the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not gone along with his disciples in the boat, but only his disciples had left. 23 * Other boats came from Tiberias near the place where they had eaten the bread when the Lord gave thanks. 24 When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into boats and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus.” So now they too are looking for Jesus 25 And when they found him across the sea they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?” 26 Jesus answered them and said, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled. 27 Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life,* which the Son of Man will give you. For on him the Father, God, has set his seal.”l 28 So they said to him, “What can we do to accomplish the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent.” 30 So they said to him, “What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you? What can you do?m 31 * Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is written:n ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” 32 So Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.o 33 For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 p So they said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” Let’s see if they accept that bread 35 * Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.q 36 But I told you that although you have seen [me], you do not believe.r 37 Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and I will not reject anyone who comes to me, 38 because I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me.s 39 And this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it [on] the last day.t 40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him [on] the last day.”u 41 The Jews murmured about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven,” 42 and they said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his father and mother? Then how can he say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” Looks like they didn’t accept that bread and they even murmured among themselves. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”a 52 The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us [his] flesh to eat?” 53 Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. 54 Whoever eats* my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. 57 Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me.b 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever.” 59 These things he said while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum. Note what he said in verse 55 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. He said it is true food and drink not symbolic. In verse 6, 66 not the number of the verse ¿coincidence? They didn’t follow Jesus they failed. 66 As a result of this, many [of] his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him. 67 Jesus then said to the Twelve, “Do you also want to leave?” Jesus was not going to back down on what he said and asked the 12 if they where going to leave to but they didn’t. Now let’s look at Luke 22, 19 19 * j Then he took the bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me.” He said DO THIS in memory of me. It is necessary to do this. Also note that it is now that day that was said in John 6, 4. Luke 24, 28-31 28 As they approached the village to which they were going, he gave the impression that he was going on farther. 29 But they urged him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. 31 With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. They urged Jesus to stay with them. So Jesus went in to STAY with them. Several things happened when he broke the bread 1. Their eyes where opened 2. They recognized Jesus 3. Jesus vanished Since he went to stay he stayed with them in the Eucharist. In acts they have the Eucharist Acts 2, 42 42 They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of the bread and to the prayers. Verse 46 Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple area and to breaking bread in their homes. They ate their meals with exultation and sincerity of heart, 1 Corinthians 10, 16 The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?l 17 Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.

Big problem with the father analogy. The baby WAS BORN for everyone to see and thus the man becomes a father. The 'bread and wine' here is STILL bread and wine and NOTHING has changed - no 'baby' in sight.

Instruction "Memoriale Divini" of SC for divine worship, signed by Pope Paul VI, May 28, 1969. He did not contemplate communion in the hand, but Monsignor Annibale Bugnini, secretary, misleadingly introduced in the document, That the Sacrament of Communion could also be received in the hand; Shortly before being signed by the Pope. When Pope Paul VI realized the error, communion in the hand was already spreading. And he cries out this phrase by which he has been known: "THE SMELLS OF HELL HAVE ENTERED THE CHURCH." Annibale Bugnini entered the masonry on April 23, 1963, with the name of "Buan".

Nowhere in scripture do we find this teaching. We see scriptures refer to the elements as the body and blood, but we also see Jesus clearly stating that the words He was speaking were spiritual words when talking about eating his flesh and drinking his blood: "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life."(John 6:63). He did not say they were literal words; that is, He did not say that they were His actual body and blood. But, a Catholic might object and say that Jesus clearly said, "This is My blood . . . " and "This is my body . . . " This is true, but Jesus frequently spoke in spiritual terms: "I am the bread of life," (John 6:48); "I am the door," (John 10:7,9); "I am the resurrection and the life," (John 11:25); "I am the true vine," (John 15:1), etc. In the context of John 6, Jesus is telling His disciples that they must eat His body and blood (John 6:53). He clearly says He was speaking in spiritual terms, " . . . the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life." (John 6:63).

The key words are, "Catholics believe." This is a video teaching what WE believe in...this is not telling you what your religion believes in, but if I were to figure out your religion, I could tear it apart like you tried to do mine. Just because you have Protestant beliefs does not mean that our beliefs are less than yours. And the passages you gave are the very passages that explains WHY we believe the way that we do. So, before you come down on a Catholic for their beliefs, you need to learn why we believe the way we do, how we interpret the Bible and what our traditions are. Just because YOU don't believe, doesn't mean that we are wrong. Leave the hate at the door and actually listen to what is said...Just "food" for thought...

You're main objection to the the Real-Presence is your heretical interpretation of the "flesh vs spirit" passage (thinking "flesh" means the physical world rather than sin)? So you're a Gnostic? ;)

Kevin Mifsud my friend we have read the bible we are aware of the verses you posted your not the first to point out those verses. Let me try to explain. how does the flesh profits nothig mean symbolic? It is not meant to feed your flesh it feeds your spirit. In John 6 when Jesus is challenged in this he changes the word for eat to trogate which means to gnaw or if you speak Spanish tragar . And can no longer be interpreted symbolically. He had the chance to explain it was symbolically and that was what the crowd wanted to here but he doubled down on it. when he spoke symbolicly he always explained the symbolism he never explained this instead he doubled down and even asked his apostles if they wanted to leave. The true presence was not questioned until the 17th century. Luther and king Henry believed in the true presence.

"But your faith demands far SUBTLER insights:..." And so it is, it is the SERPENT who is known for being SUBTLE - " Gen 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtle than any other wild creature that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God say, 'You shall not eat of any tree of the garden'?" If you believe this 'real presence' then you will believe ANYTHING that the devil spews out. It is written "For WE are members of His Body of His flesh and of His bones"

In Opus Dei education, you can’t receive communion with any kind of sin. But if you do have communion with only venial sins then you must commit to do confession in the near future. Also, any kind of sin must be pardoned in confession only: there must be a priest pardoning even venial sins. It’s a bit harsh, but it is what it is.
