May 21 will mark 3 years since my diagnosis of leukaemia (B Cell ALL). I was 42 when I was diagnosed, am 45 now. I will never understand why I am getting through it while others, especially children, are not. Theatre has been my salvation for almost 40 years, and tonight is opening night of One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. I am playing Nurse Ratched. My entire performance has been dedicated to my Mom, who lost her battle with pancreatic cancer last June. But I would like to dedicate tonight’s performance to Mae, and I’m sending all the love and hugs I have from here in the Pacific Northwest of British Columbia to you, and all of Mae’s family, friends, and loved ones.

It’s strange to me too. My uncle in his 50s developed Hodgkins Lymphoma, had treatment and recovered from it. While that’s amazing, I wish that children could recover more easily from these things. It’s heartbreaking. I bet you’re an amazing actor. Thank you for being a kind soul.

@Xessa82
@Xessa82 23 дня назад
Cancer also runs in my family. My grandmother got hit hard by cancer. She was such an amazing person but she got dealt a really crappy hand when it comes to health. She had 5 different types of cancer during her life time. She was born in 1944 and by the time she hit her early 40s in the late 1980s she was diagnosed with her first cancer, breast cancer. She had a double mastectomy and did either chemo or radiation, I can't remember which. I was just a small child then. She remained cancer free til around 2005 when she was diagnosed with kidney cancer. She had spent the previous 4 years caring for my grandfather who was dying from kidney failure. He had been diagnosed with diabetes 15 yrs before he died and it just wrecked his body leading to problems with his vision, amputation of fingers and toes and kidney failure. He did two types of dialysis over a 4 year period while he was on the transplant list but the dialysis never worked right for him. It just made him horribly sick. He had neuropathy of the stomach which caused him to throw up every day multiple times per day so eating was tough for him. He would constantly get sick and every time he did he got removed from the transplant list losing his spot "in line". He had met my gram after she had her children and adopted them all he wasn't biologically related to any of us. That made the chances of a match for a donor in our family unlikely. Family members were tested but no one was a match and people in his own family were to sick to even test or to old. He eventually started having issues with his heart and ended up in the hospital where he spent his last month of life. He ended up with sepsis and the port for his dialysis could no longer be used. They were unable to out a new one in so they could no longer continue his dialysis. He passed days later. My gram ignored her own health while caring for him unfortunately. Thankfully after he passed she went to the doctors because she hadn't been feeling right for a while. That's when they found the kidney cancer. It was isolated to one kidney so they removed that kidney. They thankfully got all of it and she was cancer free again. Unfortunately her remaining kidney began to fail not long after due to kidney disease which she didn't even know she had. She had too have her first kidney transplant in 2007ish. The immunosuppressant drugs she had to take after wipe out the immune system and make the body more susceptible to cancer unfortunately. Not long after she started developing areas of skin cancer on her body, 2 separate types of skin cancer. From like 2009 until she passed in 2020 she would have to go to in the dermatologist multiple times per year and every time they would remove areas of cancer, mostly from her back and arms but a couple times from her face and other body parts. Donated kidneys usually only last about 10 years and hers started to fail in 2016. She had to go on dialysis for a while and in 2017 she had her second kidney transplant. Both kidneys were donated by our family members. The first by her son, my uncle and the second by my cousin, her grandson. On February 5, 2019 we suffered the unexpected and tragic loss of my mother, she was only 54 when she died. It destroyed me and my grandmother as we were all extremely close. They were both my best friends. My grams health started to go down hill a bit after. By December 26, 2019 my gram had to go to the ER due to blood in her urine and horrible stomach pain. We thought it was the donated kidney but they quickly found that she had a mass in her bladder. By January 2020 she was diagnosed with extremely aggressive bladder cancer. They attempted to go in and remove the tumor that month but it had spread into the lining of her bladder. On February 5th, 2020 which was the first anniversary of my mom passing they did surgery on her again, this time an attempt to completely remove her bladder. They found that the tumor had spread more and was wrapped around her blood vessels, veins and nerves. They determined that it had spread to much and they wouldn't be able to remove her bladder so they closed her up. The cancer being wrapped around her nerves was causing her horrendous pain which they were struggling to keep under control. She went from living on her own being able to do everything for herself in December to being completely bed bound by February. We were told she wouldn't make it another year and might only have months left to live. Sadly she came down with the flu the end of February 2020 and had to be put on a ventilator. On March 5th, 2020, a year and one month after losing my mom, they took my gram off the ventilator and she passed away due to a combination of bladder cancer and complications from the flu. She has so many family members from her generation and above that had cancer, siblings, her own mother, her grandmother, etc. My grandmother had 4 children, my mom, aunt and two uncles. So far one uncle has had a cancer scare and my aunt has had cancer. No one from my generation has had it yet but there's quite a few of us and I'm sure it will happen eventually. It absolutely terrifies me. It's one of the worst things to watch a loved one go through. My grandmother fought and beat 4 types of cancer though. She was incredibly strong but the last one was just to much for her. I've struggled every day since losing my mom and gram both to come to terms with their deaths. It's so hard because we were so close. They were basically both mothers to me. My grandfather was like a father to me because my bio dad isn't in my life. It's quite lonely with out the three of them and I miss them all terribly. Sorry for the long comment. Just been thinking about my gram a lot today and saw this video, opened it out of curiosity, saw your comment and it all came pouring out. I hope that you and your family remain healthy and that none of you ever have to deal with cancer! I wouldn't wish that diagnosis on my worst enemy! Just always stay vigilant with your health, don't ever put off getting checked out if something doesn't feel right.

I used to work in a cancer ward, and i can honestly say I've never met a group of people more positive and optimistic than those suffering from cancer, as morbid as that sounds. Mae having the ability to spread joy and support through her words, happiness in spite of her life-ruining illness, is one of the most beautiful things that could ever happen - it makes me and I'm sure others who complain about our minor issues really sit and think about what there is to mope about. I'm so sorry Alex. This has me in tears. My husband lost a friend this year and she passed the day after he was supposed to give her a call and tell her how things were going. She was his mentor and was so so very proud of him and how far he's gotten since she met him in his career. He wanted to call her and tell her all about how his new job was going and he got busy, and the next day she was gone. That regret hurts so bad, and he festered on that for a long time, but you have to know that it's okay. Mae wouldn't want you to fester on it and regret it, just like Darcie wouldn't want my husband to either. She would want you to live your best life and be happy. Take the time you need to grieve, its healthy. And then move forward and let Mae live in on in your memory and through your actions. Its the best way you could honor her 💙 I'm so sorry you're going through this. Losing a friend is really really hard, and it sucks. Wishing you the best 💙

I’m so sorry for your loss and my heart goes out to all those struggling right now with any type of cancer, all those who are dealing with it first hand or have a family member with it I want you to know you’re strong and that you/your loved one is going to beat the absolute shit out of cancer. For those who have lost someone to the disease I’m very sorry and I’m sure that they were a great person, it’s a shame that so many amazing people get their time cut short by cancer.

To the people in the comments - I highly suggest you follow Mae's account. She constantly said that she wanted to be remembered, but not as 'the sick girl'. She was so much more than that. She was an incredible writer, an incredible singer, artist, and so much more. She was loved, she was appreciated, she was influential. Her friends and family are sharing more content that Mae had created before she passed, including her singing and more writing. Please take some time to read some of her diary entries, listen to her sing, or learn about her. She was an amazing girl and created amazing things. She was talented in so many ways and I hope that you take the time to appreciate that, because she deserves it, and you deserve to see the beautiful things she made.

This is so sad. Cancer bloody sucks, especially when it takes young ones who have barely had a chance to live. However it does put everything into perspective, time is not infinite and we all should be making our absolute best effort to make each day count by not complaining about the small stuff, showing love, compassion and kindness but most importantly, not to put things off or procrastinate - be vulnerable and tell those you love that they are always in your heart. Bless you Alex for being the kind soul that you are and RIP to Mae who I've not heard of before (don't have Instagram). Mae will be so so proud of you Alex, as we all are. xx
