There is a very deep back story to why the ref didn't stop the fight, long story short, he was constantly in trouble for calling fights early and was specifically told to stop by the boxing commisson. Benny was also known for faking being tired/hurt to draw his opponent in, he was also known to be able to take an absolute beating. Just before this fight he got absolutely destroyed in another bout so that could have been a leading cause to it as well. Everything that happened was just a perfect storm of many factors that got Benny killed. Regardless of the facts it's still a terrible loss and it seriously ruined Griffiths life and he struggled for years with the guilt until he met Benny's son years later and he told him their family holds none of the blame on Griffith for what happened. This also apparently was the 1st deaths ever recorded and aired on live TV in sports.

Either Joe was wrong or the clip was edited incorrectly. Benny Paret was not gay, however Emile Griffith was Bisexuall. Paret (the straight man) was calling Griffith (the bisexual man) a fairy among other slurs. Griffith took offense to this and essentially killed Paret in the ring for it

Rules back then were brutal for the fighters. They are different now. There are more rules protecting fighters but we still have refs that shouldn't be reffing
