"Don't ever feel regret for the things between us." "No Genkai, but it would have been a beautiful life..." Goddammit, who's cutting onions back there!
After this scene I realized toguro wasn't "evil" he was kinda just teaching him a lesson. Even genkai says it towards the end of the scene. I literally cried with this scene and I'm a grown ass man
I was talking to someone about this the other day and something hit me like a freight train. Why he always wore the sunglasses after becoming a demon. His eyes never changed. They were human and they gave away his emotions.
If i remember right the first time it shows him putting them on is when he "trapped himself in a body he hates" hes crying. I think hes hides his actual self behind those glasses. Something along those lines if any of that makes sense. With glasses on the demon, without how he use to be.
They're like an old divorced couple who forget why they got divorced until they remarry and then immediately remember why they got divorced. But Yusuke is the grandson they both care very deeply about and who brought them back together.
At 4:46... "No Genkai, but it would've been a beautiful life..." Those are the very words Genkai waited her entire life and existence to hear from Toguro: that he *LOVED HER* even though he doesn't straight up tell her "I love you Genkai" because he's too stubborn and "cool" in his pride to come off sounding "sentimental" and "emotional" like a wussy lol. Justice notice how Genkai's eyes light up afterwards from hearing Toguro's words... Says it all right there folks. Says it all. Amen!
Funny, because that's not an accurate translation of the Japanese dialogue at all. I won't say it's perfect, there's a few mistakes and censorship that mess up the tone/message, as well as some 'cringe' dialogue that has not aged well, but Yu Yu Hakusho is one of the few animes where I'd say the dub is *better* than subbed. They were pretty liberal with many of the translations, but when it comes to the best and most emotional scenes, the dub actually *enhances* them with the voice acting and better dialogue.
The only thing Raizen did was give Yusuke his throne and some vital information after he died. Sure Yusuke accepted him as his father later on, but in my opinion Toguro did ALOT more for Yusuke.
The Fan Without a Face toguro taught yusuke wayyy more then raizen he challenged yusuke and pushed him to the edge and at the end made him mature a little
Potential94 yusuke lived with raizen for a year before his death, also despite his saying that his dad is a no show, he knows his biological dad, he shows up in the manga, he still supports Yusuke financially just he does so without yusukes knowledge because yusuke refuses to have anything to do with him
Rinnegan Sensei i think raizen did more for yusuke he saved yusuke from sensei when he came back as demon sensei were going to kill him again. then yusuke trained real hard with monks n keep challeging raizen. then raizen told him to join mukoro n help him in yomi fight.
If Toguro felt like he could do anything worthwhile, it wasn’t just to atone for his own moment of weakness. That was probably fully settled with his bout and defeat against Yusuke who proved weakness wasn’t its own end. Toguro would have rather lived out the lie he was called out for as an apology to Genkai: That is, that no one should ever walk the same failed path, and that playing an integral part in assuring Yusuke would not have done so was his parting gift to her. His longer suffering would contrast with her love and appreciation for an adopted son, which was the sort of life and family he could never have given to her. And because of the death of his students, he had felt the right and normal way of committing to that and to her would have been far beyond him. It’s also clear how he still loved Genkai from how he swiftly dealt with his brother who mocked her after her death, and from the ending of this scene. Toguro also killing Genkai was a way to put a closure to her own suffering (I would be willing to assume they both somehow knew that ultimately Koenma would bring her back to the living world), all while emboldening Yusuke’s development and maturity of character. Something they both wanted, yet couldn’t have conventionally in terms of the normal fashions of a family.
Man this anime has the best well put together story of all time hands down great fights, great story lines, complex characters that actually have pure intentions whether good or bad! I can watch this series over and over! Simply amazing
Mario Sims Well said, I find myself no matter what always going back to watch yu yu hakusho. It's just refreshing, every time I watch it I feel as if it's a new start.
Sean Brangan ***** There's actually many conclusions you could draw up to why he chose 10,000 years of suffering repeated for 10,000 cycles until his soul ceases to exist in Limbo but the overall reason was to repent for his deeds in life.
Tris A. Why do you think he chose to become a demon? I want to say it's because he didn't want to grow old and lose his strength. But then you have to wonder why he wanted yusuke to kill him in Tue tournament.
@Erik Cobra Kai never Dies they did though, Toguro trained yusuke in a different aspect. While Genkai trained him to harness his skills and prepare him for the power she will give her, Toguro hit more on the practical approach, on how he would develop his character and morales and how every choices he made will affect the people he loved, and making yusuke see an example of what he may become if he makes poor choices
He realized the depth of his failure, and chose his path regardless, he chose damnation to atone for the utter pain he had caused and hoped that yusuke would be better than him and make a life he could be proud of.
“Don’t you think you’ve blamed yourself enough already for not being perfect?” *clenches rock* “Haven’t you blamed me enough too!” *breaks rock* CHILLS
There is no reason such a simple character like Toguro should be so complex. I watch this show all the way through at least once a year and it still holds up.
Or maybe he was always there and never left just covered it up as koenma stated...underneath it all you would find a normal man with a shattered heart and a broken dream ... ..
That was the man, whose love was shattered, swept aside by fear, the stoic giant, walks to his punishment to atone for his crimes, and leaves the woman he loved to take care of the boy he left his pride and honor with him.
people fail to realize that the reason this anime/manga has clichés and shouldent be downed for it is because this anime/manga started the clichés we see in all anime/manga nowadays. 💯💯💯 thats why yu yu is the greatest anume/manga of all time with DBZ
Dude you're in denial, it has pretty big cliches. For instance, Yusuke is the classic protagonist who has untapped power that's only revealed when his friends are in danger. Also, Chapter Black pulled a cliche when they had Yusuke transform to beat a powerful villain out of nowhere. I think Yu Yu's great and being cliche doesn't mean being bad, but don't say it doesn't have cliches, it clearly does.
@@peterparker1683 DB wasn't cliche for it's time, it literally created the formula everyone else copied and made 'cliche'. Even Yu Yu Hakusho ripped off the DB formula, which makes it 'cliche', though I personally think Yu Yu Hakusho executed it far better. That's how media works, One Piece was the next big series that took what DB did and evolved it, and people are still copying that to this day.
I think Toguro hungers to feel pain, any kind of pain just to make him forget the most painful consequence he ever faced in his life, and that's attaining power and youth without the love of his life... he asked for a body that can live a thousand years but gave up only 50 years after because reality caught up with him (though he couldn't dare to admit) that life without genkai isn't life at all. That demon kairen really messed up Toguro badly that he wouldn't want to be vulnerable again, so he parted ways with genkai, but he was wrong, he never stopped loving her even when he's already demon. Toguro detested being a human when kairen had massacred all his students, and it shaken him to the very core, he realized the pain of losing his students wouldn't compare to the pain if one day he'll be losing Genkai in the same horrible manner as he lost his students. So his plan was to push Genkai away and become the demon he thought to be with no human baggages, but he was wrong, he isn't turned completely demon because that part of him who loves Genkai is still there buried deep inside him I think Toguro is a very complex villain and he simply didn't obsessed about being young and powerful. When Toguro is finally defeated by Yusuke, Koenma had ask for files about Toguro's past and is revealed that the then Defending Champion of the Dark Tournament Kairen has massacred their students as a form of invitation to join the tournament, and it took a toll on Toguro, I think it shaken him to the very core how emotionally attached a human can be and that he saw it as a weakness. I think he realized he could one day lose the one he loved most (which is Genkai) the same manner his students got killed and the very thought of it has driven him mad. That's why he wished to become a demon thinking he could get rid of all human baggages all the emotional attachments and stuffs, but to his surprise he was wrong, the part of him whose deeply in love with Genkai is still buried deep inside him. He asked for a body that could live through centuries and yet only 50 years after he has already given up and wanted to be finished by no other than the successor of the woman he loved. I think those 50 years he realized that even though he got what he wished for he was never satisfied nevertheless happy with what he had become and Genkai is the only reason he isn't completely changed of that one part of him that still longs for her. I also think his original plan was for Genkai to agree with his plan so they could still be together, but as he expected Genkai refused and he thought to himself he wouldn't need her anymore when he become a demon as he intends to have no more emotional entanglements with her. But their face off and the last confrontation scene, his words proved how he still has feelings for her though he managed to keep up that emotionless thug he wants to become, somehow in their conversation he let slip some hints he indeed still love her. I think by mocking her old age and repeatedly saying she was once so beautiful but now nothing but an old hag seems to me that he clings to the past far more than just being attracted to the younger Genkai, the past which he regrets not spending with her 💔💔💔
As someone that doesn't forgive himself for even the most minor of failures, I resonated with this warped sense of "atonement" that Toguro chooses. In reality even after 10000 years of punishment he would still never forgive himself, because he wasn't seeking atonement just eternal punishment. He became a monster hoping that defeating Kiren would change his own inner turmoil of failing to protect his students, but it didn't and he realizes that he won't ever forgive himself, he hides it behind trying to be invulnerable physically and emotionally, but the reality is he is trapped forever in himself, no matter what he never sought atonement, he would live his life in eternal punishment.
Genkai is gorgeous. No seriously, she's a fkin' beautiful character inside and out, especially in her youth man, DAMN. no wonder Toguro felt strong about her, despite how complex.
A man with no regrets. He knows he did terrible things, and delighted in some of them, but he did all these things of his own free will. Even at the end of things, there is still no regrets, but even he recognizes that if he had gone the other path, it would have been a beautiful life.
I personally believe deep down Toguro was still "lying to himself" and that he regretted not making a "beautiful life" with Genkai. He's just too prideful to admit it.
He's full of regret, that's what drove him. he wanted to be destroyed, and punished for what he did. He needed Yusuke to beat him to prove to himself that he was wrong when he chose to become a demon, and abandon his humanity all those years ago. OP characters like Younger Toguro and Hellsing's Alucard are intensely regretful of their decision to become demons, because they realize far too late that the power they seek is empty. That's why they are always looking for a Human to put them down, they need to prove to themselves that Humanity was the better and stronger choice, because they are too prideful to admit they were wrong, so, they NEED to be defeated, to be PROVEN wrong. To quote Uncle Iroh , " PRIDE IS NOT THE OPPOSITE OF SHAME, BUT ITS SOURCE. TRUE HUMILITY IS THE ONLY ANTIDOTE TO SHAME."
On the contrary I think he regrets deeply.. and doesn't want yusuke going the same path as he did. He doesn't admit bluntly but his words gave hints. If he indeed has no regrets, like what kurama explained when yusuke defeated toguro, that is was exactly the ending Toguro wanted and craved for, to end at the hands of Genkai's successor with a part of Genkai within him, he wouldn't bother to do all of those things he planned if regrets wasn't behind it all
I wonder if Toguro wears his shades most of the time in order to hide how vulnerable he really is. To hide the emptiness and sad gleam in his human-looking based form eyes which is a reminder that no matter how strong he gets, he can't take away the pain of loss or ignore the fear he has of loving someone and having at least glorious moments with that person instead of always striving to be glorious forever even if it comes with blood and tears.
Toguro in my opinion. Sensui was an interesting villain for the most part but a lot of his character development and story arc constantly contradicted stuff we previously knew about him and his overall motives were pretty familiar to what I've seen from villains in other animes.
toguro was and always be the complex fighter while sensui was the fighter that pushed yusuke over the edge and harder than toguro. But Toguro was the better teacher who wanted to at least teach someone a harder lesson in life before meeting death's door. While Sensui pushed Yusuke to the breaking point by forcing yusuke to fight someone split into seven.
I personally think Toguro is. Sensui's mind sorta ran from the truth he was forced to intake, so he could remain "pure" creating alternate egos in order to deal with the facts of life that all living creatures, no matter their origin, have the capacity for good and evil. Meanwhile Toguro knew this fact long ago and ever since losing his students to a demon who wanted to challenge him, Toguro knew he had to not only avenge the deaths of his students, but believed that he deserved to be punished for allowing the events to happen. However in the process of doing so, he abandoned the one person he loved more than himself, thus in the process, Toguro believed he needed to be punished for that as well, by someone who took the path he himself turned away from due to his own self guilt. For every action that was out of his control, Toguro wanted to suffer for what he believed to be his personal crimes while Sensui put the lives of countless innocents in danger for the actions of tyrants whom he had already killed for their crimes and so he could understand the demons he had been killing his whole life. Toguro's life was about suffering to redeem himself, focusing all his pain onto himself while Sensui ran from his pain and expressed it onto others instead of confronting it directly.
Awww he made GENKAI so happy with ending line. Toguro was such a good bag guy character. he really taught yusuke a lot and that was him and genkais mission....
@@idkwt2use well you have to remember thats AFTER all that we saw and we understood that the reason he did what he did was because he knew the world needed a monster to battle the monsters and he made Yusake the new monster to replace him
I love the Dragon Ball universe (both Z and the original), but Toguro and Sensui put just about all the Dragon Ball villains to shame. The only Dragon Ball villains/former villains that really come close are Piccolo and Vegeta. Majin Buu, Cell, the Androids, they are just the "face of evil" and want to fuck things up and be the most powerful entity in the universe, extremely simplistic and hard to relate to.
DB was never supposed to be complex lol. It's literally a show about punching harder to win. The only thing going for each villain was a sadistic personality, and I think Cell was the 'deepest' of them all in his belief that he was perfect and that everyone was beneath him. But other than that, the motivations of the villains were pretty contrived and simplistic: destroy the world just because they can.
It's so sad cuz they way I interpret it is that toguro is so riddled with guilt that he was immortal and lived young and could have lived young forever, and koenma offered him a small punishment but toguro saw that he messed up everything in his life by losing the ones he loved because he was holding back his emotions the way yusuke did but he didn't want yusuke to do that cuz he would have been the same as toguro, he wanted yusuke to live a happy life and protect his loved ones the way he wish he did, and because of his actions toguro missed out on a life with genkai, and saw he that he did because genkai was old, so his happiness and dreams could never have happened so he lives forever with regret because as strong as he is, he'll never be strong enough to change how he feels, so he didn't want to get an easy punishment because the bad decisions he made and living any kind of life with all the people he hurt and how he hurt genkai wasn't a life worth living so he decides he'll never forgive himself and that he doesn't deserve forgiveness and rather suffer for eternity and cease to exist would be less painful than what he would have to live with if he didn't choose that punishment because after 10,000 years he would cease to exist and then never have to feel anything anymore, I'm sure he doesn't even feel that punishment is even enough cuz I'm sure if there was worse punishment he would have taken it too. Tl;dr Hes like the guy that did horrible crimes and made decisions he'll regret forever and if the court said he got a plea deal for murder to be lucky enough to only have to do probation work, he'd reject it and say he deserves life in prison because of the guilt.
4:34 This right here. Rewatching yyh as an adult, I was shocked that my favorite part of the Dark Tournament arc wasn't the training, or fights, or powerups. It was Genkai's relationship with Toguro. I was gripped emotionally, and this moment was the ultimate payoff.
One of the reasons why this series is one of the best. The antagonists in this were were almost never truelly evil. Almost all of the main arch "big bads" were complex characters that had drives that anyone could wind up having. From characters like Hiei and Kurama turning into allies as they were looking for a place in the world to call their own for their own reasons. To The Saint Beasts trying to be free of their prison that they were in just for being popular demons. To guys like Toguro and Sensui who were looking to be punished by someone like themselves for their own wrongful deeds and short comings. Hell even the Demon Kings weren't truelly evil. They were just doing what any ruler would do and maintain their borders while trying to decide how to handle the human world relations via Spirit World. And through the tournament that Yusuke cooks up they wind up going through their own journeys of self discovery and earning a respect for humans like Yusuke. The only true evil antagonist that I can think of would be Rando from Genkai's tournament. And the few others scattered throughout the show that were never really any sort of big player in the grand scheme of the series. Just small hurdles to jump over on their way to the bigger opponents.
Most anime villains make me angry (as they should), but Toguro always made me feel something close to fear... I mean as much fear as you can feel watching an anime.
I’d argue that his Yusuke’s funeral was the saddest thing on the show. There’s nothing sadder than wasted potential, ergo Tugoro. Can you imagine if Yusuke stayed dead. Now that’s wasted potential.
@@Kuribohchaos8 true but he literally watched himself die in the beginning too. And watched keiko, his mom, kuwabara, his principal and the kid he saves all were mourning him which imo it made it sadder
One of my favourite things about watching old anime is seeing tropes that nowadays are done a lot two the point that they skim over the finer points being done with complete earnesty. Sometimes it's cheesy, but sometime's it's wonderful
He may not be the greatest but who's better? He's my personal favorite and I've seen Full Metal Alchemist (masterpiece), JoJo (great), Puella Magi (masterpiece), Cowboy Bebop, Code Geass, Steins; Gate, ect, ect. I think Togashi goes toe to toe with any of those writers and I think they're all great.
Wow like every time I see this or any other sentimental moment in the series the put a lot of work and thought the music is a nice touch as well. To think in real life people come up with the dumbest plot lines or dumbest romantic theme like the twilight series , as an example that story isn't as heart breaking as this one between GenKai and Toguro. Also the fact the Toguro could beat both Jacob and Edwin at the same time hell everyone in the twilight series with a single flick.
One of the most tragic stories about romance from this type of anime! Kinda similar to two couples like Sakyo X Shizuru & Yusuke’s parents, or Kurama X his old classmate when he did first meet hiei. So- does any of you ladies and gentlemen still have a least favorite romantic pairings which are the saddest ones of all? Or just favorites?!
I’m actually thankful for what kiren did Lier Don’t morn me genkai like you said this is the way I wanted to end Don’t stay here trying to figure me out you have a job to do your apprentic he still can be stronger
Si analizamos el transfondo, la historia de los personajes, musica y la situacion es posiblemente una de las 10 escenas mas tristes de la historia del anime...
I don't know if it's a matter of "better", they were just different, but both mentored Yusuke when he was at crossroads in Life. Toguro taught him that pursuing strength alone is a Fool's Journey, ans only destroys you and those you loved in the end. Raizen taught Yusuke the importance and value of being their with your loved ones.
Dusk Batt For some reason, that made me unironically cry like a little bitch. Pu is just too precious and to see him hurting but still trying to help Yusuke made me feel so much pain. T_T...
While we wait for Hunter X Hunter to return Mad House should remake this series. Imagine a remake that fixes the flaws of this show that would be great.
