I think the biggest secret is that the band members put their egos aside, you can hear the bass, saxophone, piano solo, guitar, drums, you can hear everything and that's what makes it special and unique, not to mention her voice. And I don't know how much of you musicians like to listen to backing track/music and then fill it, not overplay it, they say "less is more" and they got it.
@evaeilea
@evaeilea 3 года назад
Well said, some musicians are very talented and they want everyone to know and will play louder and harder than the vocals to the point where you can’t hear the singer which is the main feature 😳

In my mind, I definitely call this the 80s style slow love song chord progression lol! I think one of the things that makes it sexy is the lady Sade's voice. When I think of sexy singing voice, I think of her! This kind of chord sound can be found in a lot of 80s shows I think. "Moonlighting" and those other detective tv shows. In the 90s, I think the sci-fi video games called "Out of this World" (aka Another World) and "Flashback" also had this kind of sound as their theme songs. Anyway, this kind of chord progression makes me imagine a dark rainy night with pink or violet neon signs. Very relaxing and nostalgic :)

Do you think she/the band use this motif with intention? A major component of "Sade" is _simplicity._ I think Stuart Matthewman once said in an interview that much of the success of the band and its songwriting comes from the fact that none of the musicians are "musos"-meaning they're not overly technical. I took that to mean that they're not very 'theory'-based and aren't virtuosos.

Very interesting! Thanks for not being a Jazz Puritan, Adam! :) Too many jazz musicians and aficionados seem to live in their heads. Last time I went to a jazz gig, it scared the s. out of me. Really! Nobody was moving an eyelid (although the trio was really really good -- Olivier Hutman, Marc Bertaux, Tony Rabeson. It reminded me of Sir Ken Robinson's TED Talk "Do schools kill creativity?" About university professors: "They're just a form of life. Another form of life. But they're rather curious. And I say this out of affection for them: there's something curious about professors. In my experience -- not all of them, but typically -- they live in their heads. They live up there and slightly to one side. They're disembodied, you know, in a kind of literal way. They look upon their body as a form of transport for their heads." :D :D :D

Adam!! You (and Peter) are doing such a great job with this stuff!! I always enjoy checking out your videos and - pardon me if I"m encroaching - find a lot of the material very inspiring (and useful) for my own students. I hope that's ok... ;-). I see you looked at some Phil Collins on this sesh...I know "In The Air..." is the big hit on Phil's record, but I urge you to check out my favorite tune from that record, "If Leaving Me Is Easy", with that GREAT Ernie Watts alto intro....unforgettable. The harmony on that tune (and overall arrangement) is so hip...Anyway, just wanted to mention that tune.

@FedericoGPena
@FedericoGPena 3 года назад
@@mico5678 Mmmmm....I dunno....Some things just can't be topped (or re-imagined) and should be left alone. I do think Luther could have done it justice....but the thing about that song - other than the beautiful simple yet haunting harmony/melody and it's slightly oblique form - is that lyric!! Truly heartbreaking, especially when you realize every word is true; and I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Ernie Watts' amazing intro (and outro) statements: his contribution is as important to the song as every through composed note on it. It's very easy for many to give in to the feelings of this song and, if one's not careful, it can easily cross over into cheap (or gratuitous) sentimentalism. It's such a tender piece of music....the key would be not to over emote. I always say [that] there are [some] tunes that are so beautifully crafted, that all one has to do is put one's hands on it and they bring one home!! I think Luther might have been able to glean that [about this tune] and do it justice...but I'm too attached to the arrangement and the playing on this - and Phil's vocal performance too [obviously]. Great to read your message and connect with someone who also loves this tune; not many people know it....Sending you a vibe.

@@avr5439 Well even melody is hard to prove actually. Spirit tried that with their song Taurus vis a vis Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven. But we know what happened, Zeppelin won out.
