FAKE NAME if your siphon is connected to your faucet just run the hot water all the way( hot as possible) let it drain for a for a while . The hot water will kill most bacteria and parasites This seems to work for me. My faucet gets super hot .
When I was employed at a children’s science museum, one of my regular tasks was to siphon pebbles from the upper section of the outdoor water and sand flow exhibit using the last method. To accomplish this, we used a short, clear tube, which we submerged completely underwater until it filled up. Then, we covered one end with our thumb, lifted it out of the water, and released our thumb to initiate the siphoning action.
This guys awesome when i was younger i always wanted to be a fish vet. as i got older it didnt seem realistic boy am i wrong this guy is actually doing it. I'd take my sick fish to him.
I've never heard of these ways! This is so cool, thank you! I use the Python Hose that connects to my sink but it uses so much water that I may just start doing it this way!
Great work Doc . I didn't know about the kink method . As I use a garden hose to do water changes this method will help alot. I also run water through the garden hose till I fill the hose, then disconnect the hose from the tap (faucet , that creates a syphon.
Dr. Loh, love the video. Totally addicted!! I'm new to fish keeping and your videos have been a tremendous help! I wish I had a local fish vet on the East coast of US.
A fellow hobbyist and best friend contracted some dangerous strain of hepatitis, went to the doctor and to his surprise the first question the doctor asked him was "do you have an aquarium?". He then remembered starting a siphon with his mouth and swallowing some water during the process...
Thank you so much been wanting to try this for so long cuz i don't have a pump + Filter yet, my Dad has been telling me now to use my mouth, thank goodness i never tried it, I didn't know you can catch so much diseases from Fish and Animals in general... Will try the regular hose trick!! Taking in this great educational vid as of Thursday 21st May 2020
thanks for the tips! I myself put the hose in, aim it up and bring it out of the water, let it start to flow down and immediately flip it down back into the water.
Doc u saved me...... at morning i was feeding my fish some pellets but the container kinda slipped but luckily i caught it before it fell in the tank but a lot of pellets spilled out....i thought the fish would eat then but at evening a fish died so i was concerned that the other fish would also die and if my dad had found out this much food is in the tank he would kill me. I did the 2 method and sucked out all the food from the bottom. Thanks doc
I use airline tubing and a small clear acrylic tube that I took from an under gravel filter riser. I carefully check the bucket in case any fry accidentally get vacuumed up. I also curl the airline tube into the bottom of the bucket to create a whirlpool/vortex, I found it stops fry from crashing into the bucket or water and getting hurt if they do get vacuumed up.
With large aquariums what I do is hook up the hose to the bathroom sinks spout ( with adapter) turn on the water for a few seconds...then disconnect the hose, and drop it into the shower drain . In summer,I use a very long garden hose..run in from the backyard..again start the syphon with hose water, disconnect the garden hose and the tanks water runs back and makes good plant water.
The same way I do it by placing my thumb over the end. Useful info Dr Loh. I know you're probably a busy man but would you please post more regular vids.
Strongly recommend that you use a hose that's long enough to place one end of the hose inside the bucket and have to hold it and aim at the inside of the bucket. Have the hose coiled a couple of times inside the bottom of the bucket or clamped/tired so that it can't flop out. (Never a good look.) If it's possible, don't use a bucket at all. There are very heavy and can overflow very easily. Lash out and buy a garden hose that you can run out the widow to your garden (if a fresh water tank).
I always got problem to start up the external canister like the eheim and jebo I am using. The large button that supposedly helps you to start doesn't work. I am interested to hear how the rest of you resolved this?
SERIOUSLY thanks man! You just saved me from having to suck turtle shit into my mouth. I really didnt wanna die within the next week. I knew there was another easier way with house. Except my hose are the thin water pump hoses...guess I'll be here a while. Hey beats suckin down a load of turtle shit! Thanks again. You save lives...lol
Please Doctor could you tell us what kinds of diseases you could catch? To my knowledge there was only one to worry about and that was Mycobacterium marinum or Fish Tuberculosis. As far as I know that can only be caught in humans as a nasty skin infection and I was advised not to put my hand in a tank if it had any broken skin.
Your last method is how we drain our spa. :) We use a 2" flexible hose with a big rock attached to the end to hold it to the bottom of the spa and dump the other end out in the yard. Just drop it in and start stuffing the hose into the spa until it fills up, thumb on the end and drop into yard.
I put one end of the hose under a faucet. Let the water fill up the hose up my thumbs to close off the ends of the hose. Then move it to the tank and syphon.
I always done the last way. Usualy have a wider flare at end in tank. So can get waste out of gravel without stiffening gravel. Not sure what called. Got a like 200 gallon once. Bought one that hooked to kitchen faucet. Had a like reverse suction mode. Then after empty. Could refill. Very nice set up. But bigger tanks they stay clean longer. Probably every 2 years. Crazy.
For my 32 gallon reef tank I make a small coil with the hose and put the whole thing under water at about a 30 degree angle and then roll one direction or the other 3 or 4 times until all the air is out and then do the thumb method, super easy and 0 mess
