My ancestors, 150 years ago and more ago, from the Isle of Skye, collected seaweed from the shoreline. They let the, prodigious, rainfall then wash the salt off it. Then they fed it to their cattle. It wasn't a small amount to supplement regular feed either.

I am a biologist working on symbiotic microbes (symbionts). The methane is produced by the microbes in the rumen of cows. We can screen them and select bacteria that produce less methane or not at all. These bacteria can be isolated and mass-produced in bioreactors and given back to animals (like a probiotic). If these bacteria dominate the rumen the amount of methane released would significantly reduce and they grow themselves. This might particularly be effective on young calves that microbes are just going to colonise. Furthermore. there are bacteria that actually fix nitrogen. These bacteria again could be isolated and produced. The cattle with such bacteria I assume might have a better rate of feed-to-protein ration ratio which means more meat with the same amount of food. This would revolutionise the industry if successful, cheap to do the research, produce and implement with significantly positive results for the industry, food security, prices, and environment.

Sounds like Australia, through you're work, has a great tool to let Australia take responsibility for our activities. So, if we made inoculation of calves with no methane bacteria at birth (cover the teats?) mandatory, we could make a massive difference to Australia's greenhouse gas emissions?

@@awolffromamongus875 Theoretically yes. Just like any scientific hypothesis it needs to be tested and optimised. But it is not anything extraordinary. Even the probiotic pill you take is doing a similar thing which is changing your microbiome. The good thing about this is, it is very cheap and easy to impliment.

Strange as it may seem cows and all animals have always farted and produced methane and guess what its produced by nature itself as well. Maybe if we just let cows eat grass we wouldn't have to go down this sort of ridiculous path , having owned and operated a feedlot years ago a feed supplier convinced me to try a new pellet feed that was far superior to grain for feed conversion . Luckily I only introduced about 1000 head to the new pellets as about a week later i had about 98% of those cattle severely bloated , the feed companies suggestion was drench them and there was Absolutely No chance it could be there pellets. First thing I did was shut them off the pellets and mixed large amounts of bicarb and molasses in there water troughs to entice them to self drench due to the sweetness of the water from the molasses , Luckily it worked and within about 3 days all bloating had disappeared . Only a week later i received a frantic call from the same feed company as they had convinced a much larger feedlot than mine to introduced the pellets , exactly the same thing happened except on around 15000 head with heavy losses . If we are so obsessed with methane production why not just let cattle eat grass as that's what they are supposed to eat !!

It is a very attractive prospect, to reduce 15% of global greenhouse gases to almost nothing. And we should try. But developing nations are very unlikely to pay for this supplement and even if it were free, they would be unlikely to invest time into a process with no payoff. But Australia exports a lot of beef so we could have a small but measurable impact on global emissions. I just wonder whether we should raise the cost base of Australian industry when developing nations are growing and industrialising at a pace that means Australia's efforts are almost pointless noise compared to global trends. We may just be pricing ourselves out of markets.
