Across Australia worn-out, broken-down tractors languish in paddocks and sheds.
Keen collectors pay big money to restore these rare relics.
And as Tim Lee discovered there's one Australian-made tractor at the top of their wish list.

Cutting up 32 Grant tanks. I can hear Aussie Armour Museum crying from here, UK. Great piece of history I never knew about before.

My neighbour,Harry Newell and his brother built 2 Upton type tractors at home on the farm. They used Grant tank final drives and the tank transmission, running backwards. Then a Road Ranger transmission, running normally.1 had a supercharged Nissan truck motor and the other was a Detroit 8V71.The rear tyres were 23 by 26 rims welded over the tank track drive sprockets. They had the quietest diff I've ever heard on a tractor. Both tractors still survive.

The efficiency of agriculture machines is a beacon illuminating the path towards a world where farming is both productive and environmentally conscious.

I've always loved the "UPTON". I've never personally seen one but I remember well the articles and photos in Power Farming Magazine back in the day. Back when if you couldn't buy what you wanted then you built it, like all the tandem hitch tractors that would pull three twenty eight run combines on an A frame. I was only a kid back in the sixties but I've seen what us Aussie's are capable of and are proud of them.

Aussie Upton 1967/78 vs usa's Big bud never heard of the Upton till today RU-vid keeps alot hidden from your recommendations even though you look up aussie tractors The first twoBigbud tractors were the 250 Series, purchased in 1968 for use on the 35,000 acres at Semenza Farm between Fort Benton and Chester, Montana. Initially designed by Wilbur Hensler, built by employees at Northern Manufacturing Company, and made for the Rossi Brothers, Big Bud 747 came later in 1977 also Handbuilt - Then a farmer in WA built a big ass twin tractor cummins engine that pulls a 127ft wide seeder THIS tractor pull was bad ass ive never seen any finish

Kinda similar to the Honey Bee tractors built up here in Saskatchewan Canada. Cool to see how tough these were built!

An old knothead I know made a rig like this from the rear end of a R-35 Euclid rigid frame quarry truck and an old 'B' model Mack with an 18 speed 2-stick quad tranny, Mack, of course. Worked right well!

Better as tractors than tanks. A tractor helps to produce, a tank just destroys.

The Bell tractor are similar in their design. Their build being extremely heavy duty . But still not as big as these animals. Thanks for uploading the video.

Ive even seen a home made copy of an Upton, same power train, but the engine was a Nissan 2-stroke diesel.

I got to climb around Upton engineering’s scrap yard as a kid. By that time all the Lee’s and Sherman’s had gone, but there were still Alligator’s and Buffalo’s there!

I enjoyed that video. I had heard about upton tractors in passing due to their record breaking hp. I suspect there would be more still in service if they had lift arms and power take off shafts.

I’ll tip my hat to the Australian people for building what’s needed with whatever they have and doing a good job of it

Is it just me or do these Upton tractors remind me of the 500hp Honey Bee tractor made in my homeland of America?

Such lazy reporting, the moving images shown were not of the correct tanks. Uptons used American General Grant/Lees/ Shermans tanks, been there, seen that. Not Vietnam era British Centurion tanks or captured Japanese tanks as shown moving in this video. The photo of the derelict vehicle is an Amphibious Landing Vehicle. Uptons only used the tracks from them and the turret rings.
