@@graveborne8724 too kind, lol. I was watching this again the other day. The speed montage of black and white pictures at the end is great, but my favourite bit is when the girl appears, skips past the singer and pulls a face.
EDIT: First of all a sincere thank you to everyone who has left a comment about this video. To know that something I did made so many of you laugh like goofballs is intensely gratifying, especially since I kind of wrote it off years ago. Just FYI, I was the original creator of this 8-9? years ago. I (re)wrote the words and my brother sang the hell out of it. Men Without Hats' publishing company (or someone- I vaguely remember the name as “Bulldog” something or other) hit me with a copyright strike and removed it. Someone else uploaded it and got over a million views. Couple people re-uploaded since then. Glad they found the video in better quality. Literally (no pun intended) the only vid I could find was super low quality at the time, like 240p 😬. I also sent the link to the director of the original video, Tim Pope... he enjoyed it. I thought MWH did not feel the same based on the video getting pulled. Again, RU-vid was much different at the time and I had little idea of how any of it worked. I remember thinking at the time they should change their name to "Men Without Humor". EDIT: many people have since told me that Men Without Hats actually enjoyed this and shared it on social media so I still really have no idea the reason it got dinged. Again, this was almost a decade ago and probably the first thing I ever uploaded to RU-vid. As I said things were *very* different then. I got a copyright strike and naively thought I would get in some kind of legal trouble 😆 so I just dropped it. Honestly I forgot all about it- I was just looking for a karaoke version and saw it. Crazy. Very gratifying to see so many people enjoying it still. EDIT: Ironically I can’t even watch it as it seems to be blocked in the US. I can’t win with this video! 😆😆 Also, anyone who has a problem with the “gay” line... I can’t really help you there. As some people have pointed out here it was slang for “lame” in the 80’s, most of us used it as kids when we didn’t even really understand that concept of homosexuality or even know any openly gay people. As a line in the parody here it was meant in the context of the 80’s when we would say things like “that song is so gay”. It wasn’t meant with venom, just a very mild sort of derision, more of a playful tease. So, a bit childish? Totally. Homophobic? Not really, in my view. Saying it today in the context of the video I personally find to be on the very outskirts of “risky” humor, eliciting the very slightest of “can you say that still?” reactions. Comparing it to “Bill & Ted” is definitely *not* accurate though as the word they used is definitely more of an aggressive slur. A more accurate comparison would be to the “you know how I know you’re gay?” scene in “40-Year Old Virgin”. One thing I can assure you though- and it’s kind of sad I even have to make this disclaimer- it was certainly not meant in a homophobic sense. And as at least one commenter echoed, my gay friends didn’t seem to have any problem with it. I am planning on re-recording this and really thought about changing “gay” to “lame”. I honestly don’t care either way, as long as it’s still funny. I’ll try it both ways but truthfully it’s kind of irksome to feel like I’m conceding to moral outrage on something so piddling. The comments here have been pretty level-headed about it, I have to assume that’s because it’s a UK audience as opposed to a US one. I remember some of the comments from one of the previous uploads the outrage from some individuals was pretty eye-rolling. In the end, I don’t really care too much but I’m very tempted just to keep it as is simply to piss people like that off. Cause in the end- I think- regardless of race, creed, gender, etc the type of folks we can *all* do without are People Without Humor. And really, don’t we have other, bigger things to get upset about?
The same happened to Dascott he moved to Funny or Die, just for the ones he made he didn't make anymore after wards. I understand why his enjoyment was gone after the battles. Sad really as he had a couple in the works. As with this others have been uploading his to try and keep them on YT. On the upside in the UK, if you are there, changed copyright law to protect parodies as long as the vid meets the legal definition of a parody it can be used to defend against copyright claims and the copyright claimant has to go to court if they think it doesn't, unlike fair dealing/use defense where the one making that defense has to start court proceedings. Though with 0:28 to 0:31 it makes me wonder do you know my mum? It's a standing joke with me an my mum about her working on Corpy Road.
Corpy Road is one of the "red light districts" where I grew up. Hence my mum being a "crazy ho". It is funny seeing those who over hear me asking her how many punters she had last night when I go down for a visit. Or when she says as we sit down in the coffee shop and she say my feet are killing me, and I say that will teach you for working on Corpy Road last night at your age. :-) It says something when I showed his to my mum that she asked if this was an original. Though saying that it actually makes a lot more sense than the original poor mans YMCA as there is only the "S" sign.
I'm 65, and in pretty lousy health. First saw this a couple of years ago, and it's been cracking me up ever since.never fails to make me laugh.Sheer genius, thankyou.
This video needs to be saved in the Library of Congress as an important part of our cultural heritage. The reworded lyrics are spot on. I've watched this dozens of times and laugh hysterically every single time.
im a 80s Kid, this was very magical for me when I first watched it in the 80s..... I just saw this and clicked on it to bring back some old memories, and took me like 30 seconds to realize somethings not quite right lol
@@alexanderthompson683 Hmm. I just looked that one up cause I hadn't seen it. It was pretty boring imo, I didn't find it that funny and was bored of it halfway through. :( I therefore gotta agree with OP that this one is the best literal video. XD
Found this posted on a Dr. Demento page. Now I have to watch this gem every couple of days. Brilliant wording and the singer is better than the original. The entire video is a perfect 10.
Sometimes when I'm sad I remember this and come here and my depression goes away.. every line makes me laugh. Thanks! Whoever did this has a excellent sense of humor.
Really? I thought I'd be the only one XD Don't know how often I've seen this video but it still makes me grin and once watched I just can't get the lyrics out of my head for the rest of the day.
I just watched this video for the first time about 15 minutes ago. I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. And I want to give the creator a big thank you. I needed a laugh like this. I read the creators insight into this video. And I didn't see anything wrong with how the video was, or the words. I am a gay man myself, and I didn't take any offense to the way it was used because that's how the term gay was used back then. I heard it as lame, boring, etc. I enjoyed the hell out of this video. Many thanks.
The world needs way more layed-back people like you! (PS: Even the most conservative people these days don't give a damn what consenting adults do in the privacy of their bedroom, so enjoy yourselves 😎👍)
First I only knew this parody and then accidentaly watched the original when i was looking for it. I really didn't notice the first two minutes. So yeah, really good job here.
Pat the Batman Fan if you are responsible for this you are a deadset genius. This was a mediocre song at best until you guys came along. Men without Hats publishing should be paying you guys for what you've done. I doubt a day goes by without me quoting a line or 2 from your literal version. The other day we drove past a property with chooks just pecking around, immediately I said to my wife"what's the deal with the chickens," .... she laughed knowingly. Every market or school fete now reminds me of "a renaissance fair from hell." And "crazy ho" has become a part of my every day vocab. Thanks.
So glad I found this video. It's the funniest thing I've see in a long long time. There are not many videos I actually really laugh out loud! Thank you for this masterpiece!
Excellent work. I also in the past referred to that word as lame only. Original definition is merry vs todays popular definition 🤷♂️ Regardless, great vid and choice of lyrics
Thank you for bringing the video back to RU-vid!! Was crushed when they removed it. Always makes me laugh. The original is good, but this version is just better lol :)
Just so you know, I was the original creator of this 8-9? years ago. I (re)wrote the words and my brother sang the hell out of it. Men Without Hats' publishing company hit me with a copyright strike and removed it. Someone else uploaded it and got over a million views. Couple people re-uploaded since then. Glad they found the video in better quality. Literally (no pun intended) the only vid I could find was super low quality at the time. I forgot all about this too but I sent the link to the director of the original video... he enjoyed it. Unfortunately MWH did not feel the same I guess. I remember thinking at the time they should change their name to "Men Without Humor".
Why do I have difficulties recalling information at my exam despite studying for it, but I get full lyrics of Safety Dance literal version instead after hearing it 2-3 times
I have to disagree Total Eclipse literal is in the number one slot. This is a great literal vid and should be used by others as one of the only two that should be used as examples on how to make a great literal vid. As they both make more sense than the originals. :-)
As a 90's kid who absolutely loved this song and video when my mum would watch 80's videos. You've made a whole new level of amazing-ness to this. Thank you LOL.
Came across this years ago and laughed so hard having grown up with the original. Come back from time to time if I can find it, otherwise I have to search for my downloaded version. Utterly brilliant! Well done.
