As beautiful as Iceland is, it looks like it would be an unforgiving landscape for settlers without access to modern technology. It's not difficult to see why the protagonists of the Sagas are always as tough as nails. I'm really loving this series, please keep them coming.
What a brilliant idea to film this where the events actually took place in the saga! I drove through this area one week ago and saw the signs for berserkerhraun and wondered why it was called that. Now I know! I also noticed that there is more snow on the mountains than there was one week ago. This Is my favorite place that I visited during my week in Iceland. Thank you for a well told story in a wonderful setting.
Big fan of this series, I could listen to him all day talking about sagas. Please someday make an audiobook. Great narration and seriously, who doesn't like a great collection of Sagas? Thank you so much for sharing and making these stories more accessible for everyone.
Absolutely fantastic! Great storytelling and amazing landscape. Plus Dr Mat does well to keep his focus and footing as he walks among the rocks and lava fields. Thanks guys.
I enjoyed this very much, as I have your previous presentations of these stories from the sagas. I like to suggest that you and the Grapevine publish a series of DVD collections made up of these videos to sell in the Grapevine store. I would certainly buy them and, judging by the interest shown in them (by the number of views and comments), I believe many others might too. I'm looking forward to the next episode. Thank you again for these stories!
In the summer I drove out towards the Westfjords with the intention of going right round Snæfellsnes first, but it rained for the first few days of the pre-booked car rental. So instead I went straight across to catch the ferry from Stykkishólmur. So thanks for filling in what I missed. The landscape in many places in Iceland today looks too stony for farms with animals etc, as if the climate in the time of the sagas was better for pastures. Excellent series.
Another fantastic video Matthew! I spent an afternoon in the Berserkjahraun a couple of months ago and even for a lava field it is a very desolate and spooky place - and that was during daylight. When the Sun goes down and you don't have the luxury of a modern car to take you back to your warm hotel it must have been a terrifying place. Keep up the good work and hope your research is going well.
What a stunningly beautiful fall day, absolutely matches the mood of the story! I vote for a monthly calendar so we can have some of these gorgeous moments to view every day! (Definitely should include the full cast of characters with Polly!). I’ve been watching each week for two years, it just keeps getting more amazing over time! Amazing treat guys, thanks so much!
Hello from Las Vegas! 👋🏾 I absolutely love ur channel. It appeals to my inner nerd! I love learning about history & folklore from other cultures. I’ve been glued to the TV for hours. ❤️🔥
What is the oldest continuously inhabited location in Iceland? I love the sagas and Matthew does a great job in telling the stories. Seeing the locations but also knowing so many are wild locations now, made me wonder where is the oldest place still lived in.
Berserkers were raised, brought up to be completely insane, they were fed on raw meat and maybe human flesh as well, covered in tattoos and yeh, just made to be completely insane and capable of attacking many men at the same time, I think to be thrown or catapulted over the main warrior defence and to go bonkers from behind the lines, kinda.....amazing! ;D
Psyseer wasn't that great of a grey. Beowulf is a better story. People need to remember who wrote these sagas and what metaphors were used and codes implied..Just imagine the Sulphur intake from the underground and below, continuously breathing that in and out ..stoned on nature and post viking drugs. Everbody was a seer in those days ..in that place. None of what I wrote is true ..but it is fates destiny.
