This is my 2nd Keurig coffee maker of this model. ru-vid.comUgkxBrV-RbF5Nk0Rlt9i15aao-YMzqzTG8Vf The first worked fine for more than 2 years, and I could still get a decent cup of coffee out of it if I fiddled with it when I decided to replace it. The problem I had with my first unit was this: When attempting to brew a cup of coffee, the unit would either keep brewing until the coffee was undrinkable or it would not run long enough and the coffee produced was way too strong. I cleaned the unit as best I could but it did not help. So in the end it was just too much trouble to get a good cup of coffee out of it, so I decided to replace it with a new one, which has been working great since I unpacked it.
I love this machine. I am 70 cups in and havent had to go to the coffee shop yet. I am very impressed by the quality of these shots. So glad I purchased this when it was on sale with a $50 gift card. Whats even better there is an incredible amount of videos about this machine out there. Remember the burr settng WILL need to be adjusted in addition to the grind size.
Very good video. I've had my Barista Express for a few months now and this was one of the best primers online as I was a nervous beginner. Just as stated, it took very little time to get to the point of a perfect extraction.
I'm really struggling to get it right, using single dose, the extraction begins gets to start of the grey bit then abruptly stops after 2 second :( please any help. I've tried going finer, all the way to the finest. Used weighing scale to put exactly 10-15kg of pressure. Nothing works
As a coffee lover, this is a really excellent and informative video in its own right - lots of great coffee-related info in there. I love this machine and the fact that it’s built with those who have ‘coffee as a hobby’ in mind!
After weeks of testing with several beans (also hand roasted from smaller roasters) I can confirm what many other users said about this machine: The pressure gauge on the Barista Espress is misleading because you get the best results when the gauge shows that you are at the top maximum of the Espresso range. In the beginning I always tried to be in the middle of the grey "Espresso area" and that was the big problem. Maybe there are beans where the middle of the grey area is the optimum, but with all beans I've tested so far (10-15 different Espresso beans) the perfect extraction was always when the gauge showed the upper maximum of the Espresso range. So according to my experiences with this machine I can only give the advice to new owners of this machine: Completely ignore the pressure gauge! Try to find the correct grind settings where the extraction is round about 30 seconds with 1:2 brew ratio and much more important: Use a scale! Without a scale you have no chance in the beginning to find the correct settings. Use constant 18g -> ~36-40g Espresso and adjust the grind settings until you reach 30s extraction time. And be constant with your tamping. A distribution tool can really help with that.
Thunderbird1337 Completely agree my best results were when the pressure gauge was just towards the end of the separated grey lines, anything below that and the flow rate was far too fast and the espresso cane out sour and under extracted. Not got a weighing scale yet, but even without it I can still make a decent tasting espresso, I also don’t bother with the razor, it makes too much of a mess and wastes coffee
What grind size are u using, I can't get it to increase pressure no matter what. I'm on the second finest grind size, am using a scale to ensure I do 15 to 20kg of pressure (which feels like a LOT) and yet it still reaches a small pressure then cuts off after 2-3 seconds (I'm using single measure in the portafilter) please help!
@@Cmysteryman You don't need so much pressure when tamping, that's nonsense. My guess is that your problem is channeling. If you grind too fine, the risk of channeling is high. Start in a medium setting of a grinder. And use a distribution tool (and maybe one of these things with fine needles to loosen the coffee) to be sure that the coffee has evenly distributed density before tamping. You can grind as fine as you want , as long as you have channeling problem, you don't get proper pressure.
Concerned about the waste plastic from a nespresso pod machine, so looking at Bean to Cup, but the ground coffee spilled all over the machine, worktop, floor has told me what I need to know. Thank you for an honest representation of the machine use Sage - well done.
I bought this gem 💎 and I did not knew about coffee how to do it, my friend came to my house, seen this n said can I try to make a coffee, he tried n asked what coffe beens I'm using I showed him he started to laugh, next day he came with 5 days fresh coffe I did not knew he started to work as barista, he made coffe of a fresh coffe, that was a f out of chain coffee, from that day I stopped buying from markets coffee, he explained to me that this coffee can be till 2 years old... I felt such a shame I wasted those months on a terrible coffee! Thank you Sage for this coffee machine that doesn't hurt wallet for what this machine is capable off!
Hi David, You're right! Sage is owned by the same company that owns Breville USA and Breville Australia and that is Breville Group Limited in Australia. Kind regards.
@@georgfuchs9436 The double filter is for a double espresso. Mine came with 4 filters, two for espresso and two pressurized filters for pre-grounded coffee.
If anyone is watching this for research into buying a coffee machine. You will not get a better machine for the money. It even beats the pants of ones at 2k and 3k. Here is something to think about. I have had this machine now for a while, I have ground and made over 200 kg of coffee through it. That around 32 stone in weight with no issues. Wonder how many higher priced ones would need serviced even before half this weight.
I'm glad you like your machine, but to say it's on a par with 2k or 3k machines is just nonsense. It's a cheapish single boiler domestic machine with all the problems of temp stability that come with all single boiler machines, cheap or otherwise. Also the grinder is just about ok at it's price point but doesn't give any real consistency that you'd get from something like a Niche Zero. Pair this with any entry level HX machine with a proper E61 grouphead and the difference will be night and day.
I have this machine and love it! Some mornings I can do latte art, and some mornings I can't. The contrast in viscosity between microfoam and espresso crema is near high-end cafe quality.
maciej wrotek The machine heats up very quickly! There is only one boiler in the machine though, so you can’t pull espresso and texture milk at the same time. Pull the espresso first, then it takes about 10 seconds before the wand is ready to steam.
Anybody else notice the second shot, Mr. Blumenthal selected a double filter size grind, but only selected the single shot dose on the extraction? Regardless, I found this video to be very helpful. I just got the Barista Express and just out of the box I've had good results. I've got to experiment to get my shots perfected, but Mr. Blumenthal is correct, it's a process and I'm enjoying it. Thanks for the video.
I noticed this to. Totally confused me. Why would he do that? Just to confuse everyone lol dick move. I started using a double for single shots thinking its how its done . Thks for wasting my coffee
I'm really struggling to get it right, using single dose, the extraction begins gets to start of the grey bit then abruptly stops after 2 second :( please any help. I've tried going finer, all the way to the finest. Used weighing scale to put exactly 10-15kg of pressure. Nothing works
@@aransingh9140 hi, no I just filled it up and went with the setting it came with, but have tried to decrease and increase amount a little but no change
I`ve been drinking coffee my whole life and I have from time to time asked myself the question "Do I actually enjoy coffee or do I just enjoy the routine coffee-drinking provides". I`ve drank (pre ground ? idk english), nescafe (and "all" variants of that type), instant coffee and with or without milk, and sort of just went with it thinking "yup. this is coffee" . Now after getting myself this machine, I`m absolutelly godsmacked of how much of a difference in taste it makes. I cant stress enough that EVERYBODY!!!11 needs a machine like this. If you are a pre-ground / instant coffee / nescafe person reading this => Buy this / similar machine immediatelly! Everything else fades in comparison. I cant believe Ive wasted 32 years of my life drinking regular coffee. Fuck me this is AAHHHHHHH HOLY SHIT THIS IS AMAZING!
thanks for the vid. I just got the barista expres and started experimenting. But jesterday a friend came over and asked for a simple coffee. Me.......uhhhh......... How do I do that?
I have bought the sage barista express and i love it: fantastic. I can get a great double espresso shot but i can’t with the single one. My settings: grind size 3, and i put 7g of coffee. Should have more coffee in the portafilter? please help. I’m using Lavazza Super Crema. Thank you
Thanks very helpful. At the end you talk about storage of beans and discourage use of fridge or freezer because they're environments that are too moist. I respectfully disagree. They're indeed hugely dry environments as long as refrigeration is working! Water vapour will condense on the freeze panels and ice up. The science is clear.
Great video. I got this machine last Christmas but as fine as I grind my coffee beans I never can get the pointer past 12 o clock. Altho the coffe drips too slow . If it’s a bit coarse the coffee drips too fast. Even on cleaning mode my pointer won’t pass after 12 o’clock . Is there any issue with my barista? Thanks in advance.
You say that the pressure gauge was at 12 o'clock not far off exactly where we would like it. So where would you really like the pressure gauge for the best extraction? Because the range on the dial goes to around 2o'clock before over extracting.
Thanks a lot Dave for such nice videos. One quick question. I have got recently a Barista Express. After how many coffees it is normal that the drip tray gets almost full? 5, 10, 20, 30? Just an approximation answer is good enough.
We recommend storing your beans in a dry environment and no where moist like a fridge or freezer. Keep the in the bag within a cupboard as dry and dark. Hope this helps.
What about the extraction time mentioned in the manual? Your doubleshot espresso did not extract in 20 to 35 seconds. What about a single shot espresso? Should I half the extraction time then to 10 to 17 seconds for perfect espresso? Please help me
Great video, love the machine! The only thing I'm really having a hard time figuring out is the single espresso filter. When using the double filter, I get the perfect pressure and extraction amount (prefer upper part of the scale to get a longer extraction time). But when using the single filter this filter is very different and require a much courser grind size to be able to get a good extraction. This is a shame as constant adjustment to the grinder needs to be applied between the filters. The internal resistance in the filter seems to be VERY high. Also, oddly enogh, it takes a long time to pressure up this filter. When using the default extraction (30 ml), I only get optimal pressure on the last 1/3 of the extracted volume. This produces very poor espresso so I gave up and always uses the double filter with a 2/3 double extraction (programmed on the single shot button). Could this be a pump issue on my machine? It is brand new, only done 50 shots.
Absolutely, Sage should offer any form of plastic part or whatsoever that gets put there in order to prevent that. I am really not happy about that part. Other than that the machine is fine.
Hi! Is the filter in the water tank a "must have"? We have a extra filter system and we would use only this water. Because of that I don't see a use of the "sage filter"...?!
Hi! I'm planning to get one, but a bit hesitant coz it might not produce a hot latte as I want it. I don't want it just warm, I like it hot. Does this machine produces hot latte? Thanks!
Worth checking before buying it if you can find replacement parts, even accessories, in your country. Impossible to find the filter holder and cleaning disc in mine. Neither can I order from any "supply shops" it seems. Otherwise a fantastic piece of machinery.
I am opening a small restaurant and i dont want to deal with coffee companies and the bullshit contracts they make you sign. I do not intend to serve 100 coffees a day as this machine won't be able to handle that but would this be ok for say 10-15 a day?
Hi, Thank you for your video and your way of explaining. Really great! You made me love the machine and now I'm thinking seriously to get one but nowadays people are moving to coffee capsules claiming you always get the same taste and flavor every single cup. What do you think about that?
thanks for your feedback. The machine you see here is a machine designed to give you the full enjoyment of Barista experience exactly how the professionals do it... on our machine you will manage the dosage, grind, tamp pressure and milk texturing for the best latte art. hope this helps.
*Nakantas Cat* I hope you did buy an espresso machine or make your coffee _any_ other way than using coffee pods/capsules. Espresso machines will give you a much better coffee and, over time, will end up costing you less money overall. But the biggest reason to not invest in pods/capsules is the absolutely _hideous_ environmental impact.
Hi I've recently bought one of these machines second-hand but in very good condition I actually used some ground coffee that have been in the fridge for probably a fortnite and I didn't get any pressure at all from the gauge would this be the problem with using coffee and where are all the oils have gone and also it would be a damp environment I guess? Thank you
In this video you do not tell us the size of the cut has the millet, how many grams does the coffee have in the basket, what pressure do you practice on the dump, it seems strange for 60 ml to last the 32 sec extraction.what kind basket use simple or double wall
Very informative video. Still having issues with mine. I am at the finest I can be with the grind and I still get a quite fast, 14sec pour (measured from the first drip). Exactly 17g of ground coffee, just enough tamper and still getting it. Whst else could be done about it? Assuming obviously changing the beans with some higher quality ones.
Try the body weight tamping if you want it to be slow or your beans are out of date. Try using fresh beans and store them in an air tight package in a cold place...fridge if possible.
I notice that mine is the same, extraction time is half of the "standard", whatever this is based on. Also,in the video the time also is 15 seconds from he starts the extraction and only 5 seconds from first drop until finished on the single espresso he makes. But he uses the single shot button on a double filter, so this will give a very short espresso as much water is left in the filter. On his double shot the time is 11 seconds until first drop and 25 seconds until shot is done (assuming no video editing was done in that cut scene :)
Great video. I have my machine a year now and love it. One thing though if you can help, the pressure is always difficult to even reach the 12 mark, even when grind mark is set to very fine. Any suggestions or help on what could be preventing this?
If you have decent beans and apply good tamping pressure you should get good pressure even at 4-5 grind size on this machine. Sounds like the grinder should have a check-up.
Since I always liked how the espresso looks in the Nespresso commercials, with the nice, thick crema in this cups of glass, I bought them. But soon after I went back to regular espresso cups. Glass doesn't keep the shot hot for very long. Regular, thick walled cups are far better.
I’ve just recently got one of these machines, I’ve watched a couple of these videos and from the look of things my coffee looks ok but for some reason it all tastes the same. I’ve used 3 different types of coffee from different local coffee shops and they’re all roasted around a month ago. The pressure gage isn’t looking to bad around the 1pm mark. Is there anything that I could be doing different to alter the flavour of the coffee? I know that it’s not my taste buds because I can tell the difference of coffee when I have one from a coffee shop. Any advice would be greatly appreciated please ☺️
I'm considering buying this machine, but everyone I've asked so far suggest me to buy the Infuser with Smart Grinder Pro (not sure Sage has this option, but Breville does). What would be the advantage of buying the unit with the built-in grinder, regardless of price and space?
I'd like to know why in the UK this has a price tag £100 higher than in the US, (prices from Respective Amazon sites), if it's because of the 'celebrity' endorsement by an experimental chef with more interest in making quirky rather than tasty food who furthermore has nothing whatsoever to do with coffee then I'd happily take the Breville rather than the 'celebrity chef' Sage, (which are identical in all but name). It royally pisses me off how people in this country lap up celeb chef endorsed crap and pay through the nose for it.
+spidiq8 As Husain said, it's mostly the sales tax. US sites don't include sales tax in their prices because each state has different tax rates. Also, us Europeans have very high VAT compared to the US, leading to higher prices.
you can increase the amount it dispenses with the knob on the front left. you can also manually grind by holding the portafilter on the grinder. pushing it once delivers adjustable single or double shots. holding it in grinds until you let go. one trick i learned from another video that i now do every time is only use the single-shot grind button. for doubles i just do a single shot, tamp, and then another single shot. this cuts down on grind spillage :-)
+detailsubset You're right about the dryness. Coffee people say this a lot because of their results. This is why. Because the coffee beans are cold after being refrigerated or frozen, once they are exposed to warm air, water condenses inside and around the coffee beans. The advice is still decent because i think it's hard to transfer them without too much condensation.
+detailsubset Freezing is rarely a good idea, as mentioned in previous comment, the moisture occurs when the beans are exposed to the warmer air after leaving the freezer. Not only does this moisture effect the flavour, but it also effects the grind and clogs your grinder over time. If you must freeze, best thing to do is to portion your beans into 20g 's (if doing double shots) and grinding immediately from removing from the freezer. It's still not as good as keeping your beans in an air tight/UV protected container. But it's a good alternative if you're not using 250g/week or there abouts.
and as the "driest place in your house" every time you open it, moisture rushes in, and then freezes. that's why freezers that don't have defrost features get filled with ice. what this means for the coffee is the same situation - they get wet. what happens to your glasses in the summer on your drive to work? they get cold on the ride in, and fog up as soon as you step out of the car.
Of course you can make americanos with this machine too, by simply using the double filter and let the water run longer. But you should keep in mind, that a machine like this is intended primarily for preparation of espresso and all bevages depending on espresso, like latte or cappuccino. So, yes, it may be some kind of overkill for your type of usage.
Pretty complete video! Thank you for it. I have the same as you are, and this machine works perfectly, but I find the steam turning button a bit hard to turn in a way or in an other. What about your machine? Thank you for answering me. :)
planning to buy the 870 for my coffee shop...can you recommend this model for commercial use...oh take note its just a small shop..serving about 50cups at most of espresso based drinks a day thanks...
+joran delos Santos Hi, Our machines are not for commercial use. We wouldn't recommend using it in your shop. Any questions give us a buzz on 0203 764 1722.
The clean me mode is not working for me, do someone have an idea why? The problem is the supplied cleaning disc you have to put in the 1 cup portafilter. With it does not start the clean mode properly because no water pours, without the supplied cleaning disc starts to pour water properly. Can someone please help me? There’s no intention from Sage to Help due there’s no videos or manual in case of error and they don’t respond anything in social media. Many many thanks!
pretty good video nameless man, I don't get the coffee trimmer, surely the machine dispenses the correct dose? and if you are going to trim you should repolish your tamp
mine came with one. you sure you didn't toss it with the box? it comes in a small brown wallet-sized box. the machine has no way of knowing what coffee bean you are using and they all grind differently. they suggest you start off at factory default for a new coffee and then dial it in. so grind setting and dispenser setting both at 5. For our first batch of beans, the pressure was too high so i set the grind to more coarse. For the next batch we ended up back at 5. the trimmer is just there to help you dial it in - you don't really need it
Its even better than that now?!?!?!?.... Can you guys gift me it. I promise Ill make a video on it or something getting you more buyers 😁. Ive always wanted a coffee machine, starting to get tried of making cheap coffee at home!
You should really fill the filter up to the point where the razor scrapes off. Only then you have the perfect amount of coffee for your perfect espresso.
Hello, i have this machine and i found the perfect setting for a double shot. However, when i do a single cup it is different from the double shot? Is there a reason for this?
Unfortunately you can't just half the setting of a double shot to get a likewise perfect single shot. Neither can you set the grind amount to double the settings you use for a single shot. Seems like the grinder doesnÄt work that linear.
Very good video. I tried to follow all the steps, but I'm not able to get both parameters right at the same time: pressure and extraction time. I'm using the single filter and fresh beans. I wasted a lot of coffee to try different settings. Ultimately I ended up with grind size 7 which builds up to the perfect pressure and delivered the best taste. But unfortunately the extraction stops after approximately 16 sec. I've tried to switch the grind size towards the finer end of the settings and timed after every step I changed. I had to go down to grind size 1 (!) until the extraction time finally reached 25 sec. Don't need to mention that the taste of that shot was awful. Is there anything else I could try?
Have the exact same issue, this machine probably uses a very different extraction time than the default 25-30 seconds. Have not been even near this using the "correct" pressure. But coffee still taste best when around 11-12 o clock on the dial.
I got this one aswell about a month ago and you can programme the extraction time yourself. Hit programme, hit single or double and then let it run for however long you want and then hit single or double again and thats how it Will do it from then on
@@OneAndOnlyMiklas Yeah, but that's not the solution. When you set the extraction time you also modify the ratio. So in the end you hit the 25 sec. mark, but on a 1:4 ratio. That's not the goal.
Why does the machine spill so much coffee powder every single time we make our fresh coffee powder grind, this is really not working well. Look at your own video from 2:32 - 2:34 and look at the amount of coffee powder that lands on the the machine grid...that is really not well done. There should have been added any form of plastic part to ensure it doesn't get spilled so hard. I am really not happy about that in my current stage of using the machine. Lots of cleaning involved and actually quite a perceivable spillage and waste over a longer period of time. Is there any way SAGE can try to work something out here and put it up for sale? Anything that prevents so much spillage?
Can anyone here explain to me why this Sage coffee machine is just like the same design and fuction with Breville bes870XL coffee machine. Are they one or Sage is an copy of Breville.
My coffee is coming out far to fast and watery! Can anyone help? Iv adjusted grind amount and coursness and nothing works. Bored of wasting expensive coffee. Thankyou!
+Robin Malik Honestly, I've had it over a year now and it's great! Still works perfectly and I've used it pretty much every day. The only things I would mention having watched the video again, is that it's definitely louder than it appears to be in the video, but still not a major problem. Also, you do sometimes have to tweak the grind settings/amount depending on how long your coffee has been sitting in the hopper, so you can sometimes get some inconsistency. It's not really a case of leaving it one one setting and you'll be drinking perfect coffee every morning. I am in no way a coffee expert, but I would seriously recommend it. Definitely had a lot of use out of it. Hope this helps.
