Both are outstanding rods with the edge on all around performance going to the Sage X, however the Sage SONIC delivers tremendous line speed, distance, and control for demanding conditions.

the sonic sounds like the sage one, i wanted the one for a long time but it felt a tad too stiff at times while test casting it so I never purchased. Then the X came out and all of the reviews said it had more feel and more of an all-around trout rod so I immediately purchased it sight unseen. Love it, especially the 490 4wt... I also have the 590 but I like the 490 better, Im not sure why but I can cast the 4wt just as far as the 5wt...4wt has cabelas prestige line and the 5wt has rio perception tri color. The best 5wt I have cast to date is the scott radian, but my rod had issues so I got rid of it...would not stay together even with wax.

What is your favorite overall Sage model in a 6wt for big trout/bass application? Or if not a sage for 6wt, that's cool too. Bobbers/nymphs, streamers, float n fly setups

This one is really interesting. I though it was a replacement for pulse, but it's not it seems.. I know you compared the 9ft 5wt, but: for a river configuration in 9,6 or 10ft in #8. With a rio single handed spey line or shooting head, do you have some thoughts which are more useful for single handed spey casts?

Good suggestion, that would be interesting. The DART sends pretty high line speed. Not sure how they would differ.

As I read it somewhere, isn't the Sonic a rebadged Sage One for a lower price? Just like Sage did with RPL and VPS? Great looking river for wade fishing. Nice 'bow too!

fwiw....like the X but I once owned an 8'6" ONE and demoed a 586 SONIC last year(in heavy wind)...didn't feel as tip-stiff as the ONE at all and I did like the lighter swing weight. The line just couldn't hack the wind but that was a #5 line vs northern Maine wind(~30+). Casts to 10 & 2 ended up at 9 & 3.

Any idea how this would compare to the older sage bolt? Got a bolt in 7wt for a streamer rod. Wondering if it’s worth it to replace the old stick

It's a much better rod than the BOLT and not quite as fast. It put down a straight line, crisp, but not a stick. That BOLT wasn't a good dry fly rod whatsoever. I only liked it for streamers.

Have you fished the 596 yet? Does the extra length aid in accuracy?

Great question, I have not fished the 596 but spent years using a 596 as one of my primary trout rods. Longer rods are less accurate. Once you get beyond 9' accuracy tends to wander. It will give you more reach and make it easy to open up your loops casting double nymph rigs, but as far as accuracy goes I would head in the other direction to 8'6". The 586 build seems to be deadly accurate IMO.

How do you think the Sonic 790 or 796 would fish as a trout streamer rod?

If you are heading north to AK, Russia, or south to Chile it might make sense. This is a very high octane rod and would think the 691-4 will be best.

Oh they can brake for sure, but the Q.C. on these is enormous. Sage works super hard to insure perfect quality there.

What fly line do you recommend for the Sage X 590-4? I know that Sage recommends the Rio In-Touch Perception? What other lines fit the Sage X well? Thanks!

I like the SA Amplitude Infinity as my #1 choice, but the RIO Perception is a very good fit as well!

SONIC not even close. I have cast quite a few Recons that my guests have brought. Not in the same league.

I haven't cast it yet, but if you are referring to the SONIC that would be a kick ass small dry fly rod for picking off sippers. The 490 is damn accurate.
